I do want to point out something about drones and fighters, though. If you intend to use them for defense be sure that the game settings have been changed from the default 1000 units to something a little more reasonable. 1000 may seem like a lot at the begining of the game but once you've got a large empire you'll find yourself unable to launch due to sats and mines you've placed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif |

Fighters will combat launch, even if that would temporarily put the race over the units in space limit.
The fighters return to the surface after combat anyways. If by some chance, the planet were destroyed and the fighters survived, then you would have more than the limit in space until some get killed off or land. |
