What is the difference between a "non-commissioned officer" and a "commissioned officer"?

I have often wondered if I had added up all of the Posts that I have ever made over all the forums I have belonged to what my post count would be and what rank that would equal.

I have been a moderator in 7 forums, and have held forum ranks as high as they can go, say for those who owned the forum.

Congrats on your 400th posting. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I look forward to your 1000th. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

And welcome to the forum DarkHorse. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

OK, Here is a list of NCO's (Non-Commissioned Officers; Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major of the Army. Does that help?

We in the Air Force do it a little differently:
Buck Sergeant (obsolete), Staff, Technical, Master, Senior Master, Chief Master, and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

Basically if you don't get yourself killed after a while they put you in charge of other guys and make you an officer. You can get to be an officer for just doing your regular job well enough to supervise others, but you don't get a "commision" unless you do something outside of that. Nowadays they send you away to officers training school which is like college. Or you can skip the whole NCO track if you go to college before you join the service.

In the past you could get your commision other ways. Battlefield commisions happen during big wars sometimes. And in olden days you could be given a commision simply by being a landowner or an important member of soceity. That was basically jut a way to keep the riff raff from thinking they were equal to you just because they happend to join the army before you did. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'm pretty sure that is what happens in this forum as well...but it goes more like, as long as you don't get yourself fired because of spending too much time posting here and have your 3000 dollar computer repoed, they make you an officer.

Just guessing as I wouldn't know being on eternal kitchen duty.

Oh, four hundred! I've been wondering... been a Sergeant forever... Well, I'm not that far away... still someone ought to post the numbers somewhere...
