Also, in that crappy film about the whales, I seem to remember the ship in question coming down into the atmosphere. Wings might be handy there, although I think in the real (ie not stat trek) future the idea of capital ships coming down for atmospheric travel is pretty ridiculous, at least until the technology gets so ridiculously advanced that things like air resistance and gravity could be almost completely nullified. Until then, stuff will be dragged up into orbit by space lifts or by specialised shuttles.

I am not so sure wings on spaceships can be passed off as being for atmospheric travel. For a wing to generate any lift at all it's got to be a particular shape. Otherwise it's at best useless, and at worst could cause extra drag and make atmospheric flight less efficent and harder to control. The ships all seem to get around in the atmosphere using their thrusters to generate lift and directional control just fine, so the wings are likely just for ornament or for other reasons like the heat disipation already mentioned.

There's also the Treknobable explanations about needing certain shapes and placements of interior components to generate the right shape of warp bubble or something.

Thanks for the complement on the ship set.

Right now the set is an exclusive set for the story I am working on, (Once Upon The Stars - OUTS)

I have not put the set up for download because I have to establish a few facts in the story before I can give the race its history and society information.

I am writing that now, and will be posting the latest chapter to the story by this weekend, (hopefully if I don't go riding.)
