The damage value of the repulsor = how many squares they push.
With large mounts, you can get 20+ movement and throw them clear across the combat map. |

I believe so; in P&N there is even a component called the "Point-Defense Repulsor Beam" which repels seekers, causing them to waste their movement and hopefully run out of fuel before they hit you (if you have enough beams to keep them at bay!)

PDRs are also good against fighters that have short-range weapons or ramming warheads.

Of course, there is absolutely no reason why you can't combine tractors and repulsors!
