<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think I still own this game. I transferred it to 3.5" from the original 5.25" about 10 years ago. I haven't tried playing it in about two years, but it worked fine on my old 486. The copy protection still requires that you own the manual though.

The games I mostly feel nostalgic about were the first games of a type I played. I can remember playing Red Alert for almost an entire weekend, or staying up till well past midnight playing Romance of the Three Kingdoms on Genesis.

I still have those games, but I don't play them anymore because I've played other games in the same genres and gotten jaded. The novelty is gone, and the flaws are that much more apparent. But I still remember sending my team of 10 generals with intelligence 90+ into a province to turn it into the model of farming efficiency, and agonizing over whether to capture Lu Bu and try to keep him loyal (mostly through saving and reloading) or just execute him.

Why this instead of Enemy Unknown? Terror from the Deep was just a rehash of the original.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Not sure...maybe cuz someone gave it to me for free...or maybe because it was so much fun watching those fat, mostly naked islanders spin around in a circle and burst into meat. Just one of those games with charm...if not originality...or high techness. :-) Not to mention that the music was really catchy...der de der de der de der de der DE DERR!!! der de...

Muahaha!

Narf asked:
"what's MAME?"

I think it stands for: Multi Arcade Machine Emulator.

You know those old Atari 2600 games and others from same time period.

Had lots of good games for the time...

I had to think about it for a while, but eventually I remembered: Sonic 2. Used to play it with a friend, in single-player mode. Normally in single player mode, Tails would just follow Sonic around and get killed a lot, but you could control Tails with the second controller (I don't think it was documented anywhere, I just tried it one day and it worked) This was spiff since Tails was essentially immortal, and you wouldn't lose rings or anything, except in the tunnel race thingy. Helped in Boss fights, and it was nice to play cooperatively. ^.^

Also miss every game of the Ultima series, tho Exult helps with Ultima 7 and U7 part 2. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif I'm an Ultima ****. ^.^; Waiting for a U8 emulator or fix. (Yes, I actually liked that one. =)

Whoever liked Paradroids: try this - http://www.javaonthebrain.com/java/noids/

I liked Tribes too but wasn't much good at it, tho thankfully didn't have too much trouble with cheaters. Of course now I want to go reinstall it after reading this thread. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I miss mining in Jumpgate. =( Easing a heavy ship up next to a tasty 'roid and mining away, was very peaceful and relaxing. ( http://www.jossh.com )

Miss a lot of other games too, more than I can remember.

Hey, anyone remember an old Microprose game called Hyperspeed / Lightspeed? Had you in control of a single person starship tasked with assembling the resources needed to establish a new colony world.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think about that one every now and then.

I used to play Lightspeed a whole lot, and always wanted to pick up Hyperspeed.

As was my way with RPGs, I eventually just hexed my way to all the components I needed in the savegame and played through the 'story' part of the game as a sort of superpower. But it was still a lot of fun. I like to give those a shot again. I may still have the Lightspeed diskettes around here somewhere.

By the way, I just picked up MoO2 from the $9.99 rack and poked at a few games. Still fun, but rather restrictive after so much Space Empires IV.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Ah, yeah. That game is still fun. I play multiplayer coop with my brother mostly. Bit of modding done too, with really cheap infantry, rapid-firing pillboxes and long range flame towers to chew them up. Choppers with super-slow nuclear-tipped missiles are quite cool too. One hit takes 'em down, they're very expensive, and the missile takes forever to land http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Civ and Civ2, MoO and MoO2, SMAC and SMAX - those are the computer games that lost me the most sleep (can't do those 3am bedtimes anymore). SEIV has replaced them on my hard drive, and I'm really not tempted to play them anymore.

The games I really miss playing are all board games: Diplomacy, Third Reich, Advanced Civilization (Avalon Hill Version), Victory, and Rommel in the Desert. Nothing beats sitting down with some friends and playing a game for the day. Even SEIV can't compare (although sometimes it comes pretty close).

what's the legal situation on that stuff?

Re: Games you miss playing

you still go to hell for stealing, if thats your question.

conveniently, i dont believe in such things. And i have never broken a law that i agreed with, or thought applied to me, specifically.

regarding MAME and legality, some companies have released their games into the public domain, so they are legal to play. others are only legal to play only if you own the physical rom, license, or cartridge - but are so old that are generally classified as abandonware, which means that the copyright holder does not care enough to defend their property. yet other games are recent enough to be defended, or are the property of rather posessive companies that dont like being robbed, or plan on capitalizing on the retro-arcade market.

mame and other emulators also have the ability to emulate systems that are still on the market, and have new games being made for them. this is largely considered theft, of the kind that will do direct financial harm to a company. not like the kind of theft you can argue for in the music industry, that ends up increasing product awareness and leads to larger overall sales. but in either case, you are breaking the law and will surely eternally burn in eternal torment for all eternity. forever. yeah.

SO DONT STEAL GAMES, YOU FILTHY CUR!

but if you do, and you dont have the time / money / effort to rig up a real arcade console, a few companies make PS style gamepads for the PC with fully programmable buttons and dual analog sticks, which you can use to play such games as BATTLEZONE, that require dual stick action. of course, you really need a twisty joystick or a paddle (dial) if you want to play such games as DISCS OF TRON or HEAVY BARREL. might as well maximize that emersive arcade experience, while your burning in hell. forever. it wont require quarters to play, JUST YOUR SOUL!
