The religous discussion in another thread reminded me of this one:

"We're all born sinful; except for Jesus who was perfect and he was sent to save us, but how can he save us unless we are sinning. So we have to go on sinning in order to be saved and go to heaven. That's how Christianity works. That's why it suits so many people." - Charlie from Nuns on the Run

more Rick Cook: "We're going to need him," Nancy said. "Someone has got to explain this mess. Some of this code is literally crawling with bugs."

"You mean figuratively," Jerry corrected.

"I said literally and I mean literally," she retorted. "I tried to run one routine and I got a swarm of electric blue cockroaches." She made a face. "Four-inch-long electric blue cockroaches."
----
"There's one issue we've got to settle first," Nancy said. "Catching errors."

"What's the matter, don't you like electric blue cockroaches?" Danny asked.

"Cockroaches I can live with. They glow in the dark and that makes them easy to squash. I'm more concerned about HMC or EOI-type errors."

"HMC and EOI?"

"Halt, Melt and Catch fire or Execute Operator Immediately."

Wait a minute, Narf, I thought witches were made out of wood? Or is it ducks that are made out of wood? Or styrofoam - that floats, too, ya know...

"Pizza!" Wiz said lovingly, caressing the cardboard as she set it on the table. "A real pizza from Little Italy!"

"I got it when I visited your world," Moira told him. "I have kept it hot and fresh by magic since we returned."

Wiz opened the box and breathed deeply. "Pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms. With extra cheese! This is wonderful."

"Best of all, the cooks say that now that they know what a pizza is supposed to be, they can make them."

"Wonderful," Wiz said, concentrating on separating a slice of pizza without losing the toppings.

"I thought you would be pleased."

"Oh, you have your compensations, wench," he said mock-loftily as he lifted the steaming slice to his mouth.

Moira smiled sweetly, waited until just the right moment and jabbed her elbow into his ribs—hard.

And Wiz Zumwalt—mightiest sorcerer in all the World, conqueror of demons, twice victor over the Dark League and keeper of the World's balance—tried to breath tomato sauce through his nose.

I've freshly discovered Rick Cook. As a programmer, I just love the WiZBiz series. Though it has its ups and downs: There, executing a program involes a brace of arrows and a stout swordarm for the final blow... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Baen's free library is indeed free.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">years ago, they built a prison in San Diego out of styrofoam. well, some sort of composite styrofoam derivative substance. appeareantly inmates would, from time to time, punch through the walls and escape.

My favorite fiction quotes are from reality:

"Vae Victis" were the words Brennus uttered as he threw his sword onto the scales. If you dont know the reference, I highly encourage you to look it up. A quick google search should do it.

if i didn't know about the Flat Earth Society, i would entirely disbelieve that styrafoam prison thing. and since the possibility that the entire things nothing more than a giant hoax appeals to me, well...

i mean, i'm almost sure i don't know anyone who would believe the FES or build a prison people could kick there way out of...but only almost.

Fine, it was a jail, not a prison. the choice of construction materials was to save 600,000 in construction costs.

http://www.sdsheriff.net/library/bf_jails.html

a web search will turn up more references. I found an old article indicating that 11 jailbreaks occured over 7 years, mostly from quick punches through walls. Im almost positive that the building was either closed or turned into a all-female adolecent correctional facility or something.
