Re: Tell us about yourself!
I'm 15 years old, post very rarely, play dominions 1 very actively and never win because of the standards I set to myself ( keeping taxes at a reasonable level, keeping people happy, never touching the luck scale, etc.)
I guess Dominions is just a huge immersive adventure to me, it doesn't really matter if I play with maximum efficiency or aim to win, as long as I have fun. I live in Helsinki, Finland and know several people of the age 13 who play dominions eagerly. Maybe getting into games like Dominions at this age has something to do with our common cultural heritage http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: Tell us about yourself!
Yes, we Finns are so powerhungry that almost every 13-years old teen wants to be a god...
Realy, i wonder why Finland has highest amount Dominions I sold per capita, and a large player community... |
Re: Tell us about yourself!
I think cuz Doms I. was a very very 'small game'.
I mean..no advertising etc. I bet that Doms II. will have lot more fans...er I think. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif [ October 02, 2003, 17:10: Message edited by: DominionsFAN ] |

Hehe...
The dev is a *mere* 31, and claims that no one under the age of 35 should play Dom http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif So does that mean that the devs don't play? Or just that they shouldn't as they are 'too uneducated...' http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Anyway, all teenagers everywhere (not just Finska) have god complexes, the only one's you need to worry about are those that actually grow up to become gods http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif |

Re: Tell us about yourself!
I think my generation (I'm 40) is different from the past as far as game playing.
We grew up with child's games (Monopoly, Life) but also we were at the beginning of the computer revolution. For a small group of people in the past, adult board games (Avalon Hill, etc...) kept them playing games far into adulthood but with computer games being so available and powerful, many adults can now play mature games on the computer, instead of just the Avalon Hill type board games, so there are a lot more older gamers because of this. I bought a few Avalon Hill Bookgames when I was younger because I loved the hardcore rules but I never actually played them so now I can play hardcore games on the computer. There are a lot more games targeted to older gamers (Uncommon Valor, etc...) so that has kept the adults playing. Also, when I was young I loved reading about new worlds and fantasy realms and now get to visit them as an adult in RPG's. It's a great hobby. In moderation! James |

Re: Tell us about yourself!
OK I havent read the whole thread but since Im just a couple short of half-century does that make me the oldest player here?
I got my sons, brother in laws, and their friends, hooked on it also and they all seem to be old enough to be the father of alot of these posters. By the way, a bit of trivia from my experinece admining MUD Online games for a decade or so.... the more that a game allows cursing, bloodshed, and general immoral acts the younger its playing base tends to me. It doesnt really apply to Dom which basically doesnt have alot of room for such things but its interesting anyway. Games which restrict such things are thought of as doing it to sell to the younger players. The effects actually tend to be lack of bad press, being able to be recommended by a larger group, and a more mature playing base. |

I recently introduced Dominions I to one of my students. He hadn't played the game earlier but he's into Warhammer 40k and such games. I gave him a crash course so that he would survive the first encounter with the UI.
Today I asked him how he liked it. He was sad to say that he hadn't had much time to try it out. He and his friend were interrupted by the friend's father who found out about the game, occupied the computer and played Dominions for hours. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

Re: Tell us about yourself!
My thanks for your consideration, Mortifer! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Anyway, I'm 33 years of age, live in Sweden and have been into comps (both when it comes to gaming and programming) since I was 12 years old - hmm, that's 21 years ago *shudder* I was introduced to paper and pen role-playing games a year later or so and has since been both player and game master in several different systems (D&D, Call of Cthulhu and Rolemaster to mention a few, although only the latter has received any serious attention from my part during the Last 10 years or so). My interest in strategy games probably began around that time as well, although one of the first strategy games I actually remember playing extensively was probably Empire. In more recent years, I wasted a whole lot of time on MUDs during a couple of years. I have also been a fairly active member of the Unreal community (I used the handle Bane there, though) and spent a considerable amount of time developing mods for that game (and perhaps even still more chatting with people about how to develop mods). Although I have left that scene, the interest for modding has remained and I seem to be unable to leave games that I like alone - Earth 2150, Blitzkrieg, Rise of Nations, Diablo 2, and several others have all been my hapless victims. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif The explanation is probably simple - modding combines two of my greatest interests when comps are concerned, namely gaming and programming. Even though not all modding involves writing actual programs, the creative process often has similarities. Apart from computers, I am interested in history, mythology/religion/etc and fantasy in all forms (talking about dragons and stuff here, not necessarily other kinds of fantasies http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) I also practice chinese martial arts regularly, which I guess is a nice break from the comp, which otherwise occupy most of my spare time. Hmm, this turned out to become a bit longer than planned, so ta-ta.. |
Re: Tell us about yourself!
I'm surprisingly similar to Calanor...
34 year old and French, I got into strat. gaming and RPGs when I was around 12 or 13 (I was sick and my mom bought me this mag called "Jeux et Strategie"; the French members will know what I mean). At about the same time, I read Lord of the Ring, and it went downhill from that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I played a lot of RPGs for a few years, and less wargames, mainly because of the difficulty of finding opponents; playing both sides of a battle and cleverly countering one's own traps can only take you so far. I did, however, play a LOT of Advanced Squad Leader for a few years. I got started on computers and computer games a little before I bought my first Sinclair Spectrum in the mid-eighties (I was 15 or 16, I'd say); I never really let go of them, since I now teach Computer Science in an engineering school (though I'm more of a mathematician than a comp. scientist at heart). These days my hobbies almost all revolve around gaming; I play a lot of computer games (either RPGs or TBS; always solo so far, but I might get started on MP with Dom2 if I can find enough BAD players like me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif ), and also a lot of Legend of the Five Rings (a collectible card game). I gave up on PnP RPGs a few years ago, and PnP wargames when I lost contact with my regular ASL opponent. |

Re: Tell us about yourself!
Here is yet another little biography, prone to be boring. Disclaimer: do not expect this... erh introduction to be original or innovative, nor interesting for that matter. Or perhaps it is merely me who do not fancy such "writings".
So. I happen to live in France (I swear I am not guilty! There was a bug when I picked my nation, and thus I was born French) and I am nearly seventeen year old. Yes, I do feel a bit young, especially when I read the two previous descriptions. *Winks* I am currently in my Last year at high school, (sorry, I do not know what grade it is) studying basic economics, history among other subjects. Unlike many (if not most) people here, I cannot say I am really into computers (or sciences for that matter). I had my first computer only a few years ago, a Pentium 133 when it was state of the art. I do not fancy programming either, although I am known to spend a *lot* of time tweaking with the mechanisms of games. As long as you don't ask me to write a program, even the easiest of all. In the Last few years, I spent really too much time in Online role playing games (private servers for Ultima Online, the Fourth Coming back in the days where it was free in France, a few MUDs as well and one or two play-by-post games, to name but a few) and in a few other games as well. (Total Annihilation or Freespace) I almost forgot to mention text-based games, or Interactive Fiction, your choice. (Who said Infocom? It is quite strange to play a game older than yourself. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) Other interests include reading and perhaps PnP RPGs, if I could find players. Easier said than done though. (Planescape... I shall stop digressing) And now, as you can see, I am currently playing SEIV and Dominions 2 (surprising eh?) and a few other from time to time. Too long a post I fear, so I will stop here. [ November 02, 2003, 17:09: Message edited by: Alneyan ] |

Re: Tell us about yourself!
Kia Ora,
I'm 37, live in New Zealand in a little town called Paekakariki by the sea near the bottom of the north island. I have two sons, Samuel (4) and Leith (3). My partner Janine works in Wellington nearby and I do the house dad thing. I have been gaming since early, started going to the OMTS - Otago Miniature Tacticians Society -about 11 (I think my brother and I were the only ones below 20 at first). D&D followed shortly afters via a one page print out bought back by someone from overseas, and I have progressed throught the various roleplay and wargame system to the point where I now run a PnP RPG using my own system - Quick Kill Combat - and am working with others on a contingent based ancients system inspired by DBM. My particular area of Ancient wargaming interest is the Late Bronze Age and my focus is, as always, is on campaigns. As the years go on more and more I find myself in the GM role. I played many of the early computer games but have always been dissapointed by the AI for strategy games. It has only been the advent of multi-player formats that has seen me make major use of computers for gaming. Significant games for me have been Muddy Waters (early MUD), Stars!, Ultima Online, Dom I and now II and NeverWinter Nights. I'm also enjoying at bit of Savage and will get the full game soon - I like teamwork in FPS. Other interests including tramping, sailing, playing music, travel, history, left wing politics, chess, being a social animal (I am a very social animal) and, when my creaking body allows me, sport - I love playing sport. Worst part of getting older, so far, is all the extra injuries that I get if I push too hard. My plans/dreams include building a NWN persistence world based in 462AD in the British Isles (the time of Arthur) with permanent death and finally getting the bands CD finished. unfortunately having kids makes progress in other fields remarkably slow. My two motto's: "Don't worry, be happy . . ." and "Don't worry about it - change it!" Cheers Keir |

Re: Tell us about yourself!
The only one I've got up on the archive right now is called Maiden of the Moonlight, a sort of Scottish-y ghost story thing I wrote for the competition several years ago. (If I'm not mistaken, Babel was one of the ones that edged me out there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) I've got to get around to uploading an updated Version of Maiden though. I already put up an improved post-contest Version, but I've fixed it up a lot more since then.
The others were written for a specific audience and, as such, are filled with in-jokes and references that don't make them very suitable for mass-distribution. Years spent working with college English has improved my prose quite a bit as well. I shudder at some of the stuff I came up with back then. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif edit: silly typo correction [ November 08, 2003, 03:47: Message edited by: Psitticine ] |
