I was teasing you. But someone was tying up Gandalf's site. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I'm pretty sure that the bandwidth of ReadyHosting is a lot better ... once I get the file past the bottleneck of my DSL uplink and posted to my site.

Well the dominions game Im hosting got abit active, and the MUD got busy. But I didnt see any big load spikes

Re: So i made a new world map

A CPU spike by Dom may have killed my 2nd try at the file. The 3rd try was a success, though, so no biggie. But thanks for looking into it even if no one asked. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I replaced that with a single solid colour and saved the .tga with compression. Together with max compression using zip, I got it down to 7.3 MB (I actually got it down to 5.2 MB by compressing it as a bzip2-ed tar archieve.) If you want I can put it up on my homepage.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Can you put up a (temp) link to the 7.3Mb .zip? I'd like to at least look at it. Depending on how yours looks vs. Torvak's current one, I may replace the one I'm uploading to my site.

Once Torvak's prettied his up, I'm sure I'll end up using his.

TIA.

It's up at http://home.Online.no/~rmoldskr/Dominions/newworld.zip

I doubt you'll see any difference unless you look for it.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Thanks. The water on your map is, IMO, of acceptable quality. Torvak's looks slightly better, but it's not worth the cost of making the zip file be 26.3Mb instead of 7.6Mb (and a 40Mb difference uncompressed!). I have uploaded yours on to my site and replaced his with it.

It looks very nice. As a World-map-iphile, I've noticed several key differences in the Torvak Version:

Hawaii no longer exists at a province, this being the most noticeable. Also, it looks as if the terrain illustrations and province terrain flags aren't matching up: Is this an intentional omission, or simply a mischeck?

Re: So i made a new world map

Yeah, I sorta noticed that the Alps were due south of Berlin or Krakow ...

Torvak March 1st, 2004 10:54 AM

Re: So i made a new world map

That's what i meant with not really being happy with it anymore. Noticed it when naming the provinces and the Ural ended up east of the graphics. So there will be a new Version.

Re: So i made a new world map

Torvak, if you're making a new Version, I have a request : could we have thinner province borders ? As it stands province are relatively small, map must ne zoomed to be readable and then borders are 5 mm wide, that's too much IMHO.

Torvak March 1st, 2004 03:14 PM

Re: So i made a new world map

Hmm right now i just extracted the borders from the old map. That's why they are so thick. But i'm getting more used to gimp (just started using it saturday) and this time i keep the different features on different layers so it'll be possible to easily change the borders later.

Gandalf Parker March 1st, 2004 03:58 PM

Re: So i made a new world map

Copying the borders and capitals to their own layer is very handy in GIMP. Lets you wipe them off of the map, make changes in the map without affecting border/capitals. OR make changes in the borders/capitals without affecting the map. Paste it all back together when you are done.

GIMP being used by the Dominions devs makes so much sense to me. Both are great (if you can get past the learning curve) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
And both are still something Im trying to reach that point

Right now i'm trying to figure out how to copy the white dots to another layer. It must be possible.
Or something like remove every pixel that is not RGB255/255/255.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Make a copy of the layer. Right click, choose Select, choose "by colour", set fuzzynes threshold to 0, select a white dot. Right click, choose select, choose Invert. Press CTRL-X. You now have a layer with everything but the white dots cut away.
