Since Gandalf Parker didnt give us any new sign up to now,I would say that we should start the game without him,as soon as all other pretenders are in and he is the only one missing.
No big difference,having 11 or 12 players...quite crowded nontheless http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: MP Game - no Quickhost closed

Although I do not want to start the game without Gandalf (it seems this is the ideal game for him http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) I do agree, if he is holding up the show we should start without him. However neither Cainehill nor Mark the Merciful have uploaded their pretender files yet.

It would be good if this would happen soon though http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

OK, I started the game. Most likely half the players will now realize they selected the wrong nation, theme, or pretender, have forgotten their password, or all four. In the unlikely event everyone's got the right stuff, the first turn will host at 4 AM U.S. Eastern time on Wednesday, unless everyone turns within the next six hours in which case it'll be at 4 AM Tuesday.

Hmmmmm...

YellowCactus and Boron forgot their passwords. In the sense that they failed to use any. So, we are going to have to restart.

I'll reset the server. I have already the pretenders from all the other players. Only those two need to re-upload their pretender files (you'll have to make a new pretender god, with a password). Once that's done, I'll re-generate a new turn 1.

I hope you're not just copying the 2h files, because those of us who already took turn 1 would have overwritten them.

Its very nice of Sheap to check that everyone has a password and to grant a restart.
Think of it,you in the middle of an important war and knowing that ANYONE could look at your turns, even players not particpating in this game,or even change your orders.
Lets say you make a movement mistake...your main army accidentally moves east and not north.
You never would be 100% sure,if it was your mistake or someone else by intention...

We should have reminded all players to password protect their pretenders before the start.

Now we have to wait on Sheap, since the server is indeed down.

Sorry about the inconvenience, the server should be working again. I did put it up before I went to bed Last night, but somehow it went into the map select screen already. I do not know if I did this by mistake or if someone logged in and did it because I forgot to disable client game starting. Either way it was my mistake. But it is fixed now and you should be able to log in http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Do the others also have to upload their pretenders again, since Norfleet mentioned that we may have overwritten them in playing the first turn?

No, only Boron and YellowCactus (not Cohen, that was a typo). I still have the pretender files from before. Of course anyone else is welcome to make changes to their pretender and upload a new copy, as long as they remember to set the password http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

OK. All ducks appear to be properly aligned. The server is now up. My starting position now sucks, and all is right with the world http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I'm going to set it to host at 4 AM Eastern, tonight (i.e. the morning of the 15th). I'm going to do this in the hopes that everyone will get their turn in by then. If they don't, I suppose I ought to extend the time.

Yes! Cainehill is very right. I probably should have renamed the game to prevent this. I will be more careful in the future.

The server is benatar.snurgle.org port 2000. Alternatively, you could go back and actually read the thread instead of waiting for me to do it for you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Reverend Zombie, we are missing your turn. I don't want you to stale on turn 1, and I know you are generally around, and (technically) have had less than 24 hours, so I will give you a little while to get turned.

Despite the title of the thread, I turned on quickhost for this turn, that way we can get moving. Once we get things going I'll switch back to 24-hour mode.

People we really need to get our act together here. I will stop having mercy on laggards and bunglers soon!

Just some thoughts....
I'm still quite new to Dominions (Had the game three weeks). But I have to say I'm impressed by the strength of the community. You guys work really hard to network these games, and I'm anitcipating a fine role-playing experience! That said, while I don't expect anyone to pull any punches, everyone is welcome to message me (In character or Out of Character) with advice, critisizm (however it's spelled) and offers of game knowledge. I've already had the pleasure of learning about Passwords, so if there are any other events that can be avoided by experience, send me a line.
Thanks,
YellowCactus

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Our game will be ,at least in theory, not an easy one for newbies.
We have a small map with quite a lot of people starting all from land positions(no water nations). This means, that everyone will encounter several neighbours quite fast.
Also we have some experienced players in here.
So you should most likely expect to learn a lot about early warfare and such http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Maybe you will learn it the hard way,but hey, everyone had to learn it somewhere in the past.

I agree, this will be a quite cramped game with lots of combat, although not, I think, more cramped than the developers originally intended.

I'm not sure it will be necessarily harder than a big map. You will just find out if you are losing, sooner http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Cainehill July 16th, 2004 05:23 AM

Re: MP Game - no Quickhost closed

I take it the game is currently set to Quickhost, without a set number of minutes / hours, since it doesn't say how many hours until the next hosting?

Sheap July 16th, 2004 10:23 AM

Re: MP Game - no Quickhost closed

That is correct. I really dislike stale turns right at the start of the game. During the first 5 turns or so I think even one stale can really put you at a bad disadvantage. However if people are consistently lagging then I will have no problem letting them go stale, we cannot have the game become delayed just because of slow people. Since turns at this point take only a couple of minutes everyone should be able to get them done in time.

I was hoping, that everyone would turn by the "normal" turn time and I could put the server back on regular 24 hour non-quickhost. Everyone got their turn in but one, unfortunately.

And here I thought that "No quickhost" meant, you know, no quickhost. A regularly paced game. Not one that drags on and on waiting interminably for people who can't bother to take their turns even though they signed up for the game knowing it was going (excuse me, supposed) to be 24 hour turns, period.

Sheap July 17th, 2004 06:19 AM

Re: MP Game - no Quickhost closed

There is no dragging going on. The game is, other than the time lost to restart, on schedule. And everyone's turn is in, actually, except mine (busy day, sorry). I'll be putting the game on 24 hour hosting tonight once I have turned.

Norfleet's message was several days ago - I held the server on quickhost for you then.

I see to be having a problem of some kind. The game has told me I have an unexplained increase of wealth. My turn bears only vague resemblance to what I told it to do Last turn. My position can be described as only mediocre at best. Should I go AI in light of this, or would you all just prefer I stay in and play it as it lies?

I saw the message this morning, which caught me a bit by surprise. It's a bit disturbing that this sort of glitch could happen.

Personally, I'd say don't drop. Unless there's a sudden stratospheric jump for Caelum in the score graphs, I'm going to assume it's a bug rather than cheating.

Well, thanks for the vote of confidence anyway. If it weren't for the new alarm system, I'd have probably just shrugged and figured it as a kind of random event, but rather than try to go for a win which could be potentially tainted by this baffling occurrence, I think Sheap is probably right, and it's best for all if I drop. Thanks anyway, though.
