Re: OT: Spread Firefox

I've seen more than a few Posts on the Mozillazine support Boards claiming that the 'bloated' suite is more stable than the 'lean' Firefox. And as others have already noticed, it's not really any faster at browsing. Its only advantage seems to be that it loads a little bit faster.

Safer browsing and more useful extensions than either IE or NS.

Computer - $1200.00 Dollars
Broad Band ISP $50.00 Dollars
Fire Fox secure web browser - Priceless

Browsing is never going to be fast on my 26k connection. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif The program is fast and and responsive though.

Unfortunately for me, sometimes Firefox crashes and I lose all my bookmarks and custom settings. It just happened again today, which is the third time in 4 months since I've been using Firefox. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif

I think now I'll have to export and backup my settings to some other folder just in case it happens again.

Re: OT: Spread Firefox

Were you doing anything in particular each time it crashed?

Re: OT: Spread Firefox

There's no common link between the three crashes that I can recall. This latest one displayed an an error in the firefox.exe module at some hex address. The other times just get the message that the program committed an illegal action and had to close - which happens other times without the loss of settings.

Re: OT: Spread Firefox

Isn't it linked with a computer crash? I know I had the same problem a few months ago; it was solved by not crashing my computer, and, above all, turning off the writing Cache for my hard-drives (which was said to result in data loss in case of a crash).

I cannot swear the solution actually solved the problem, but my settings and bookmarks remained in place since then, so there may be a connection between the two.

Re: OT: Spread Firefox

There is an extension that will backup all your bookmarks and settings every time FireFox closes. You might find this helpful.
Bookmark Backup

Re: OT: Spread Firefox

What extensions do most of you have?

DOM Inspector
GMail Notifier
Adblock (With Fyrons PlugIN)
Foxy Tunes
FireFTP
Hotmail Tabs
Tweak Network
Web Mail Composer
Link Visitor
View Cookies
Flash Got

Are these good to have, and what ones do I need that I do not have?

The two most useful extension I use are:

Tabbrowser Extensions - Has every thing you could every want related to tabs: session saving, editable tab context menus, appearance, too many tabs behavior, auto-reload, undo tab close, rearrange tabs, and many more features.

SpellBound - Will spellcheck any textbox.

Some others I use are:
FoxyTunes
Adblock
Show Image
Bookmark Duplicate Detector
Bookmark Backup
Bookmark LinkChecker
Calculator
DownloadWith
DerBrowserTimer - Adds clock and alarm functions
EZNav
Full Screen Context
Nuke Image
Nuke Anything
Paste Happy
Stop/Reload - Combined Stop and Reload button
Triple Select - Third click selects paragraph
Word Count
Zoomy - Increase/Decrease Text Size

All of these and more can be found at The Extensions Mirror.

Re: OT: Spread Firefox

I use :
Dom Inspector
OpenBook (customizing bookmarks)
QuickNote (kindof a quick NotePad within Firefox)
Search Status (I need to check google and alexa rankings for my work)

But that Tabbrowser Extensions sounds good. I might have to look into that one.
I probably should look into Zoomy also (my old eyes)

Re: OT: Spread Firefox

You have to admit there is something very appealing about having the option to install extentions that you choose. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Customizable is the best selling feature for any program IMHO now a days. Moddable would fall under this catagory as well.

Weird...Firefox has never crashed for me in all the months I've used it....until today. Ironically, it was less than 12 hours after reading your post http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif You've cursed me!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Somehow saying that a program has never crashed on my makes me think the music should change. You know, like it does in a horror movie when the guy tells the girl "we should be safe here". But I will take a chance and chime in that I havent had any crashes. I HAVE been careful about extensions that come from sites other than the main one, and putting in so many that a clash is bound to happen.

Re: OT: Spread Firefox

AvantBrowser does everything I've seen mentioned in this thread, without having to track down and install extensions. It also does a few things (e.g. page zoom) that I haven't been able to find for firefox. The interface is more customizable (and better looking, imho), and it evens allows the google toolbar (never could get that to work with firefox).

It's a smaller download than firefox, too.

Oh, and all the stuff that only runs with IE will run with AvantBrowser (mostly because it is a shell extension for IE).

There are plenty of IE extensions: myie2/maxthon, avantbrowser, netcaptor. But they won't save you from kilometer-wide security holes in IE.
