Freespace 2 was a good game but not as good as Freespace. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

The difference is, you can play Freespace 1 with Freespace 2, and get the nicer graphics (1024X768 beats 640X480 all the time, sundays included), while the other way around is going to be difficult. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif (Freespace 2 has also received the blessing of not being translated, unlike Freespace 1, which consequently cannot support any mod and... *Digression alert goes off*)

Should get Jedi Academy then. The only thing better than killing stormtroopers with a light saber is killing them with a lightsaber in each hand.

The Freespace 1 port to FS2 is available on Hard Light Productions (a jewel site for Freespace). The direct link to the port itself is here.

You do not need to have FS1 to play the port by the way: you merely need FS2 and a speedy connection if you want to download all the music/animations/voices (otherwise, it weights a fairly reasonable 15 mb or so).

Re: What Game R -U Playing now?

Daggerfall, X2, Planescape Torment, HoMM3, Lords of magic, Medieval:VI, Anarchy Online, SEIV, Babylon project(Freespace2), KotoR2 and Dominions2.

What's "real life"?

Games I'm looking forward to: Tes4:Oblivion, X3, Gothic3, Dominions3, SEV, Daggerfall remake, HoMM5(if ever)and probably many other good games.

And as one guy here said; The underdogs site really is poison.

Oh, and if someone here have tried and like some/all of the games I've mentioned, and have a good tip for other games I should try, please do tell. I've found out there's always some games I've barely heard of, that turns out to be true gems. Latest one being Dominions 2, which contained lots of things I've missed in other games, though it has it's shortcomings too.

Hmmm..

Last four games:

(1) Rome:TW (vanilla; 1.25);
(2) Master of Orion III (even with multiple mods, gave up again due to crashes, bugs and extreme tedium with no reward);
(3) IG2; and
(4) Ascendancy.

Favorites by genre:
(1) Space Strategy 4x (SE4)
(2) FPS (Half-Life 2)
(3) WW2 Strategy (HOI)
(4) Tactical (tie b/n X-Com and JA2)
(5) RTS (Warzone 2100)
(6) Turn-Based (M.A.X.)

Homm5 is expected to be released in Q1 2006, along with another game using the Might and Magic brand. Who will actually make the game remains dark at this moment: Nivel was mentioned some time ago, and Ubisoft appeared to be doing some designing a year ago or so.

Daggerfall, Torment and Freespace: you do have good taste. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I would have mentioned Gothic, but you already know that one. Maybe the games from Spiderweb Software could interest you? Their site is available here; Blades of Avernum, the Avernum trilogy and the Geneforge games (especially those ones for a stranger universe) to be more specific.

And you said something about "Daggerfall remake": is it wishful thinking, or is there actually a game that tries to remake Daggerfall?

Oh, and I almost forgot: there is another Babylon flight-sim available if you like Babylon. The address is here, and the downloads are available on the right of the page. Be warned though, as this one is rather different (and harder) than Freespace (who forgot to put armour on my Starfury?).

Apart from SE4 and CoH I am also playing Dawn of War. It's not funny the way 4 Land Raiders cut through enemy marines, not to mention cultists.

I will check out the Spiderweb Software games.
There is a Daggerfall remake in the making, though progress is slow. But still, at least there is progress.
http://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewforum.php?f=3

I've played both the Gothic games, and ejoyed both too. For some reason, I liked the first one best. Even though I had the german copy and barely understood every second word of what was spoken :p
I think the first one just had a better atmosphere than the second. Loved the first time I walked into the swamp city, the old castle, etc. The only place I really liked in the second one, was the Monastary.

I've tried the "I found her" B5 demo, but since it's far from complete, it didn't really catch my interest. Also since, from what I gathered, they haven't planned to include the Shadows&Vorlons yet, which is the most interesting to me.

Re: What Game R -U Playing now?

Daggerfall: I would love to see a remake. I was disappointed with the releases that followed it.

Lets see, desktop icons at the moment are:
DiabloII, SEIV, Dominions 2, Master of Magic, Ultima Online (playing the free shards), Celtic Kings, Tranquility, and some generic versions of Balderdash and Missile Command.

In the recently moved to the "other games" folder (still played but downgraded from being right on the desktop) there is:
NeverWinter Nights, Freelancer, StarFury, Stars!, Battle for Wesnoth, Interstellar Trader 2.

Recently bought and already deleted:
Etherlords II, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, GeneForge 2, Star Wars Galaxies, GalCiv, Master of Orion 3, Freedom Force, Divine Divinity, prelude to darkness, age of mythology. Hmmmm I know there are many more but my wife cleaned up the "dead games" shelf so I cant glance up to remind me of the more recent and worse examples.

Re: What Game R -U Playing now?

"Morrowind?"

I did play it for a while. But Daggerfall just had so much more to it. And I liked the Medieval theme in Daggerfall better than Morrowind's questionable theme. And Daggerfall felt epic, and not centered just on you. It's probably the most ambitious game ever created, and hadn't it been for the missing features and bugs, it would have been beyond doubt the best RPG game ever. I still think it is the best, in it's class, but there's so much lacking too.
I hope that, eventually, the remake will fix that.

It would seem that we share many of the same tastes Gandalf. The only ones of the games you mentioned that I don't play, are the ones I haven't tried. Will check them out now(Celtic Kings, Tranquility). I tried the latest Age of Wonders just recently, but found out it's just really a downgraded and dumbdowned version of Lords of Magic. Was going to try GalCiv now(no ship designing?).

I loved MoO2, and actually did like the sequel; when it was patched and modded. It was far from the same game as the previous one, but it did have some appealing aspects.
What I would like, is a combination of all the features and small details in SEIV, and MoO3's playstyle(except the combat)/interface. I thought it was better to work with than SEIV's.

Re: What Game R -U Playing now?

If Morrowind had had a generator allowing for more random things... Now that would have been wonderful. I found the bugs to be not so annoying in Daggerfall (once fully patched of course, and with the cheatcodes enabled for those clipping glitches), but the game did eventually lose variety. If you could just add more quests on a random pattern, more dungeons, more enemies and the like...

The wonders of wishful thinking. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

On Morrowind: Yes, compared to Daggerfall it's linear, small and kinda boring. ***But once I got over the fact that they went for stability, I realised that it's about 300% greater than any other RPG on the market.

Re: What Game R -U Playing now?

Many of those mods only alter Daggerfall's graphics; if memory serves, there were three or four packs that added quests, and nothing more than that. I do not recall if those quests were made by users or by someone at Bethesda though. Either way, it certainly doesn't compare with Morrowind's mod support and editor (just to name that one). That, and Daggerfall's mods could not (or did not, as you will) alter the basics of the game, like creating more "dungeon parts" for those random dungeons, adding equipment, or radically altering monsters (though Andyfall did have a specific human monster).

Lords of Magic was a fantasy TBS game published in 1997 or so by Sierra, so the official site may have been shut down since then. The Underdogs have some information available on the game, including the Expansion Set that was released a while later.

The Babylon Freespace conversion is available here ; it does not actually require you to have Freespace 2, but the download is rather heavy.

DFto3DS v1.1
16 October 2002 244 kb Export Daggerfall 3D objects in ARCH3D.BSA to DXF and 3DS files. 3DS files support textures.

Don't know if it imports, but if it can export, someone can figure out how to import.

And picky, picky, picky. For a game with no mod support, it's moddability is amazing for the time. I added a quest or two myself and didn't find it too hard.

Gandalf Parker March 29th, 2005 10:57 AM

Re: What Game R -U Playing now?

Daggerfall: yes I felt Morrowind went the wrong direction. The "open play" was just wander off the road, over the hill, find another road, find a dungeon. Everything you "found" you would have ended up at anyway eventualy in the story. And their "random dungeons" even I could have improved on which is something I rarely say.

Tranquility: definetly worth looking at but its NOT like any other game you have seen. Its actually an effort to live up to its name. It makes you WANT to play it hard and fast but if you do you will lose. What it reminds me most of is the star trek where Ryker brings a game back from Ryssa IV which almost takes over the ship. "you know the secret dont you? Dont force it, it almost plays itself". (and just as addictive)

SEIV and Moo3? Hmmm yes I guess Moo3 did have one thing going for it as far as being fairly ultimate in good player interface for a complicated game. Id rather see SEIV and Dominions2. I love SEIV but if it could have the oh so difficult rock-paper-scissors balance done at national level then I almost feel as if I would never need another game.

Magic Realm: just to throw something else into the mix.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/imagegallery/22
This is a game on my "every developer should get this game and look at it" list. You can still sometimes find it on Ebay. An old game by Avalon Hill which I feel came out at the wrong time. Just as PCs were getting popular they created a FANTASIC board game whose only drawback was that it took hours to setup and an hour to put away. But that was done to achieve the maximum amount of random and even the person setting it up could play. It simply SCREAMED as a board game which should have been a computer program.

Re: What Game R -U Playing now?

"But once I got over the fact that they went for stability, I realised that it's about 300% greater than any other RPG on the market."

But that's just the problem, isn't it? Where did all the rpgs go? In the old days, one rpg after another was released. Morrowind had no real competition. Some people sets it up against Gothic, but I think that's an unfair comparison; Gothic is more of a adventure game, and doesn't focus very much on skills/stats at all, whereas Morrowind does. I like both; Gothic because of it's incredibly immersive world, it really makes you want to explore it, and Morrowind because of it's depth, which unfortunately is far less than Daggerfall's.

"What's this Lords of Magic?"

I would give you a link, but I think the underdogs site is considered illegal, because it's an abandonware site. Sufficient to say, google the site, and find a review of the game there. The Special Edition of the game is the best version of it, and the one they have a review of. It's basically the game how it "should have been", but it was rushed, so they made the expansion.

As for Morrowind; Imagine instead if they had improved upon every aspect of Daggerfall, instead of creating a completely different game. We could have had much improved random dungeons, better npc interaction, the missing features from Daggerfall(nations going to war, guilds being cut, etc.), better random quests, generally alot more features, less bugs, and better graphics for those who care.
It would have been fantastic.

Daggerfall: From what I remember from Bethesda comments as the last patches came out, the code was so bad that even the people who had worked on it had trouble figuring out what some parts of it did.

Most time I spend on Morrowind (with more than 250 plugins installed), I really like this masterpiece of a huge singleplayer RPG. If someone needs more than that, there are a lot of MMORPG around the net.

Waiting for TESIV - Oblivion, can not think about anything else anymore.

Chronicals Of Riddick - Escape from butcher bay.. Great game and excellent value for $30.00 US. Also has great new feature for DVD roms - Developer commentary... very cool feature and very inovative.

I love the voice acting, original cast from Pitch Black, Johns, and Riddick. (Vin is especially good)

I downloaded and played the demo and was impressed so I went ahead and spent my pill money on the game. So far the game has been a lot of fun to play. It looks very good and has kept my interest for a while.

If Shrapnel Games could get developers to make games like this for them, ohhhh boy.
