35, married, no kids (hence the time to waste modding).
Chemical/water treatment engineer. Been playing boardgames since I was a kid, computer games since I discovered computers. Like WWII and space games - operational and strategy level. Not into real time games as I like to ponder and optimise. Play a lot of "beer and pretzel" boardgames with a bunch of friends on a Friday night. Favourite computer games - Civilisation series, MOO1, MOO2 (where I acquired my alias playing multiplayer), Panzer General, Ardennes Offensive, Caeser III, Sim City, War in Russia, Heroes of Might and Magic series. Favourite boardgames - Diplomacy, Fire in the East/Scorched Earth, World in Flames, Babylon 5, History of the World, Brittania. Oh, by the way, I'm Australian. Looks like the median age is pretty close to 30-ish. I'm 33 and bought my first PC in 1991 just to play Civilization. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
My favorite games have been Civ, Civ II, Moo, MooII, SMAC and the X:COM series. [This message has been edited by raynor (edited 01 April 2001).] |

Re: OT: How old are you ?
Seems like a good place to put my first post.
24 Years old (I think), and I work for an engineering firm in the UK doing all their foreign language stuff. First game... can't remember. Chess I suppose, shoot 'em ups on the C64, and eventually supremacy and Sim City on the Amiga. (Still have and use my Amiga BTW=-) Now I annoy my girlfriend playing low spec games all evening on my salvaged P133. I've been good all weekend so she won't get annoyed when I start my new PBEM tonight... ------------------ -- There is an exception to every rule. Including this one. |
Re: OT: How old are you ?
Seems I'm a bit older than most of you guys, 49, living in Amsterdam, Holland. I have my own accountancy firm on which I spend minimum 12 hours a day, I sleep max 6 hours, the rest is for SEIV. My first machine was the Sinclair ZX 80 (1K memory, later enhanced to 16K), so I guess I'm one of the computer die hards. When IBM introduced there first PC, indeed with Microsoft's MS DOs 1.0) I got involved with a group of people who wanted to form the first IBM computer group. Many years later this group was integrated in HCC, the biggest Dutch computer club with 200.000 + members currently. In those days my mind already was full of the possibility to play a game like SE IV, but due to memory limitations it became possible only rather recent to create such a game. I'm happy it's now possible and look forward to the next step in development. It's interesting to read Aaron's view on this in a recent article. Let's wait and see.

Re: OT: How old are you ?
I'm 31 years old, male , from Germany, support specialist for a new digital printing machine which will be launched this year. I 've played strategy games almost exclusively: Civ, MOO, AC, BOTF, ... almost everything from MICROPROSE.
It was Dec 2000, when I've been surprised by a game review of SEIV (first contact). I was sooo lucky, I read that review site over and over and over, ordered SEIV the same day and literally waited in front of my mailbox for just one week. Have no time for real life any more ... have to rule a galactic empire now... many thanks to MM and everyone who improves the game, carry on with it. |

I'm 33, married 2 kids living in London, England. I'm an IT Consultant specialising in configuration management (which is as boring as it sounds). I've been wargaming since I was 11, lots of SFB and Starfire. Like our Vogon friend (know any good poetry?) I found SE4 while looking for a Starfire link. Glad to see that the forum isn't populated exclusively by teenagers, unlike the Age of Empires ones....

I’m 21, a college student.
I’ve been into strategy as long as I can remember either with board games or the computer. I haven’t played a full game of SE4 in months since I’ve been having so much fun making data and graphic mods. |

Re: OT: How old are you ?
25, Great Russian, currently studying in US.
Been wargaming since I could remember myself. Done it all. From toysoldiering to mugging my summer camp opponents in capture the flag games. Most fun and satisfying were 7 cm. lead selfmade and painted miniatures from Macedon and Napoleonic periods. Starfleet Battles were good, so was the Stafire (still got over dozen boxes lying in the basement)Familiar with the Avalon Hill, was one good company, spent hours and hours playing Russian Front with my brother. Then over ten years ago stumbled over comps. Pretty much did all (and still have most of them)of the PC strategy and wargames. KOEI PTO series were and still are my favorits. SEIV is one superb game (except I wish instead of squares it was hex based). Not done playing yet, still got mandatory Rus Army duty to go through, hopefully some fun place like Chechnya. Played, playing and always be playing! [This message has been edited by KOCMOHABT-CCCP- (edited 13 April 2001).] |
Re: OT: How old are you ?
26 year old married guy. Have always been gaming, ever since my dad bought our TI-99/4a when I was 6ish. Spent all my time playing Munch Man and Tunnels of Doom. Moved a big step up when I happened to find an old Avalon Hill game my dad had put in storage a long time back - Starship Troopers. Then kept playing video games and started role playing in college. Now I'm out, got married 7 months ago, and am working as a computer / network consultant for a small firm in Michigan.
Don't mod due to lack of time. I have far too many hobbies. Some right now include building my own board game, and learning to play the didgeridoo. |

Re: OT: How old are you ?
20, unemployed and not going to school (was getting boring), and live in the beutiful city of Pensacola, Florida (anyone know about it?). One of the earlist games I remeber playing was Digman, i think it was called that. I still love playing games (A bit to much) and enjoy playing strategy games that really test my strategic skills. I also imagine making my own games, but I'm not smart enough to do that. Mabe in the future.

Oh, so median. I'm 31, a newspaper copy editor and a lifelong gamer, both in the computer and cardboard chit world. Bought SE4 just about three weeks ago, and I've managed to sleep a full two or three hours a night since then. I'm incredibly impressed with the player-friendly ethic shown by Shrapnel and Malfador, and with the support shown by players on this thread and others. Y'all rock.

Hi Droplede,
I too am a newspaper copy editor, though I'm 39. In two weeks I head back to Japan to ply my trade again. |
Re: OT: How old are you ?
I am a married, 38 year old, computer programmer. I enjoy playing board games and strategy computer games, when time permits. Computer Game favorits include: Stars! and SEIV. I tend to dislike Real-time games because they become click fests with no time for thinking through tactics. Favorite Wargames include GMT's GBOH series, AH's Third Reich, Republic of Rome, Dune, and Civilization (Original and Advanced).

Re: OT: How old are you ?
I am 32, computer programmer(seems like a profession of the majority here), married with 2 kids. My first game, and still one of my Favorites, was "La Battle de la Moscow"(Borodino board game) when I was in high school. Have been playing war and strategy games ever since. My favorite themes are Napoleonic, WWII and 4X. Have a large collection of Napoleonic miniatures that I have painted my self with intent to make a model battlefield....

Re: OT: How old are you ?
Aahh Moscow, great game. One of the prettiest counter sets ever. I wish they could duplicate it for the computer, although Talonsofts effort was good.

Re: OT: How old are you ?
Yes, 'Napoleon in Russia' is a very good copy of that game(played it a lot of times)!

I'm also variously a would-be professional science fiction writer [blatant plug] Check out my story in As Seen on the Web[/plug], sometime web designer, sometime violinist, as well as a lot of other things that take up time from gaming. I play almost exclusively strategy and spaceflight-sims.

I'm 28 and just got married two months ago. I have a PhD in Physics and am working in the Silicon Valley doing R&D. I've always loved war and strategy based games but have never found a good group of folks to sit down and play with. Me and some buds are playing SEIV via PBEM (one turn a night)--it's been working great. Thanks Malfador for a great game! And thanks to all the Modders for their hard work--we've enjoyed using them in our PBEM games.

I'm a 30yr-old sysadmin at a mid-size college (~8k Users) in upstate NY. It's unlike so many of the other games out today, in that it's not *when* you'll beat the computer, but *if* you'll beat it.

55 Retired for 3 years. Mostly play CRPGs and some FPS(First Person Shooters). This is my first turned-based strategy game (tried starcraft but didn't really like it). I'm in 2 PBEMs now and find that much more interesting than solo play mostly because the diplomacy gets very involved.
|
Re: OT: How old are you ?
26 years old
not married (but living with girlfriend) I play 3D-Shooters mostly ... but I love RTS and PBEM strategy games. I live in Germany (near Frankfurt). |
Re: OT: How old are you ?
26, almost 27. Unmarried, but own a home, and living happily with my girlfriend in a serious relationship. No kids.
I tend to play shooters (I prefer 1st person to 3rd), strategy games (I prefer RTS for small-scale, and turn-based for more grand ones, such as the X-Com series or any 4X game), and RPGs (both on console systems AND PC). I run a mostly-weekly pen-and-paper D&D game as well. I also keep posting here to throw out ideas I have, though I haven't ever made a mod of my own...yet. Once we have monsters available to us, watch out, world! I've been playing electronic games since around 5, and D&D since 6 (though not well at that age, for certain). Beyond that, I'm a mild-mannered (ha! I'm surly) computer programmer living in Northern Virginia in the US. --Chesh |
