I going to be setting up an automatic emailer this week. If everybody could PM me their email addresses, I can set up the automailer and get a list sent out to everyone for diplomatic purposes.

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Graeme Dice are you going to change the time back to 24 hours now that we are out of the weekend? Just curious.

Graeme Dice October 23rd, 2006 07:07 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I'll be switching the game back to 48 hours once the next hosting occurs.

RamsHead October 23rd, 2006 07:19 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Ah, yes 48 hours. Sorry I got confused there.

FAJ October 23rd, 2006 07:29 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

can you make it any faster for the first couple turns?

Graeme Dice October 23rd, 2006 07:42 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I'm not planning to make it any faster, as it's much easier to get into a rhythm when the turns come at predictable intervals.

RamsHead October 24th, 2006 12:42 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Somebody has to tell me what the Snake Charmer is like. I haven't seen him in SP yet, and as I am Atlantis, I can't even try to recruit him.

FAJ October 24th, 2006 05:07 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Um, does misfortune just increase the likelyhood of bad event or does it also influence the severity of the events? In 2 turns, random events have increased capitals unrest significantly and cut its population by over a fifth. Is this just bad luck? It never happened in SP.

JaydedOne October 24th, 2006 05:32 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Heh. I don't believe it necessarily influences the severity of the events directly -- however, there are certain HORRIBLE events that are restricted to the lower levels of Misfortune, so that you can only get them with a 2 or 3 rating.

FAJ October 24th, 2006 07:09 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

How big a disadvantage is it to essentially start with only 20000 people as opposed to 30000?

Graeme Dice October 24th, 2006 08:06 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Your starting income is 2/3rds of what it would be with 30000. It can be dealt with as long as you expand as fast as you can.

FAJ October 24th, 2006 09:07 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Reasources are not affected by pop. are they? Abysia has low gold and high reasource cost, so I am more worried about indirect ramifications (especially with a 0 growth/death scale).

DrPraetorious October 26th, 2006 06:28 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I do wish the game had an option to disable random events for the first six months.

Folket October 27th, 2006 05:01 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

That would throw off the balance even more making missfortune a complete nobrainer. At least now there is a risk involved with having missfortune.

DrPraetorious October 27th, 2006 11:37 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Okay - an option for turning off *bad* random events for spring and summer of year 1. Merely missing out on good random events would be problematic - and even order-3 misfortune-0 players such as myself experience a certain number of earthquakes and lab fires and such on turn 1.

And given how deleterious some of the bad random events can be, even in the late game (and given how useful many of the good random events are), I dispute that misfortune would ever be a no-brainer.

JaydedOne October 27th, 2006 11:43 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I've gotten used to the horrid Misfortune element at game startup. After all, is it really that much worse than starting off two provinces away from Ermor as sometimes happens? You can generally find ways around the nasty Misfortune events, even losing your lab or temple turn 1 (which, admittedly, sucks, but if you're playing Misfortune 2 or 3, you should probably be buying a mage or a priest or, better, both on Turn 1 just in case.)

*shrug* I do think that turning it off would tend to give too great a swing to the already heavily-chosen Misfortune scale. But then, we allow so many other scales to be tampered with by game settings at the game startup phase that I think you could probably add some sort of toggle or slider for random events as well.

DrPraetorious October 27th, 2006 04:38 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

You can set random events to rare, of course: but this greatly penalizes people with the turmoil/fortune combo (which is actually quite nice if rare events are common.)

Also, personally, I use a perl-script to ensure that start-sites are reasonably spread out on my random maps.

Obviously the game is going to be far from scrupulously fair - but I find it very irritating when someone is essentially swatted on the first turn, no matter what picks they took.

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I PM'd the game hoster this morning but I haven't heard back so I just wanted to let everyone know that I'll be out of town over the weekend and I won't be able to post a turn for around 48hrs from now.

Thanks,
Chris

My internet connection apparently went down this morning after I left. I've restarted all the servers and set them back to their normal hosting schedule. Look for the email notification of new turns to hopefully start tomorrow.

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Hehe, my computer crapped out and it took me 3 days to get it working again. I come back and I havent missed a turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. Such bad luck in game, such good luck out!

Is R'lyeh stale-ing?

Things are looking bleak for Oceanius, Man did not hesitate in taking our foothold on land, and it seems a priest misfollowed an order. For the time being we have retreated into our pond preparing to launch an assault on our aggressive neighbor to the south.

RamsHead November 3rd, 2006 08:32 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Do we upgrade before or after you upgrade?

FAJ November 4th, 2006 12:45 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

R'lyeh is being played by a player who is also MIA in another game I am in. It is going to make a 48h QH take forever if he isn't killed or turned over to a sub/computer.

tibbs November 4th, 2006 02:35 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Yeah, he is in two games I am in as well. Did he tell anyone he was going to be away? If not I say turn him AI.

DrPraetorious November 4th, 2006 02:52 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Are we upgrading to the patch?

Graeme Dice November 4th, 2006 03:08 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I will be upgrading the server as soon as possible, hopefully tomorrow afternoon.

Graeme Dice November 4th, 2006 02:28 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I will be patching the game after the next hosting.

FAJ November 4th, 2006 06:22 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Can we get a sub for R'lyeh or turn it into a computer? he hasnt done or said anything for a long time.

Arameyan November 4th, 2006 06:30 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

So to play the next turn we have to patch the game? (just to be sure)

Graeme Dice November 5th, 2006 04:24 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

If nobody objects, I'll turn R'lyeh over to the computer for the next turn. The next turn is also player via the next patch.

jeffr November 5th, 2006 06:59 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I've just read where a bug in the new patch causes some sort of nasty Horror to attack any commander or pretender in the hall of fame, horror marked or not. Should we patch or delay the patch until this is fixed?

FAJ November 5th, 2006 07:23 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Why has the hosting all of a sudden go to 46 hours untill next? I had done my turn yesterday, and it was less time than that before?

RamsHead November 6th, 2006 12:43 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

He patched it maybe?

FAJ November 8th, 2006 12:53 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

So is r'lyeh a computer now? He staled for the last couple turns along with man.

Graeme Dice November 8th, 2006 03:33 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Since R'lyeh hasn't spoken up to claim his position, I'll turn him to the AI.

jeffr November 9th, 2006 12:55 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

should we patch?

Graeme Dice November 9th, 2006 03:49 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

The game was patched last weekend, as posted in this thread, so you will have to patch if you want your battle replays to match what is happening on the server.

FAJ November 12th, 2006 04:53 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

How many stale turns (without notice) do you wait for untill a player is set to computer? Just wondering.

FAJ November 13th, 2006 10:37 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

I ask, because Man hasnt played a turn in over a week, Im pretty sure.

Tyrant November 13th, 2006 11:36 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

JayedOne was posting here several times a day for quite awhile until 11/4. Nothing since then, so it kinda looks like he has wandered off. He could be having a access problem though, you never know. I PMed him a few days ago and asked him to go AI if he's not going to play. Sucks for us, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Tyrant November 13th, 2006 11:37 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Anyone get eaten by the Hunter of Heroes yet?

tibbs November 14th, 2006 12:26 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

In one of my other MP games my Pretender was killed by the Hunter of Heroes. Of course that is the only game that is not patched to the new version out of the 5 games I am playing. ;P

Hadrian_II November 14th, 2006 08:28 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

i've just seen the Hunter of Heroes once and that was in single player, so i can't see whats the problem with him (or maybe he hates lucky nations http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif). But im very symphatethic to his cause to kill other heroes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

FAJ November 14th, 2006 10:46 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Man has been stale for about 10 days now, if im not mistaken.

Does anyone know where Jaydedone has gone?

Arameyan November 14th, 2006 10:53 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

No...

Should we do something for him? E-mail him or change him for a computer?

DrPraetorious November 14th, 2006 11:16 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

If he's staled twice, turn him computer - otherwise, he's just free provinces for his neighbors.

Graeme Dice November 15th, 2006 01:16 AM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

My problem is that I don't have any good way to determine who has staled on a given turn, as I very rarely actually see the turn processing start.

FAJ November 15th, 2006 01:59 PM

Re: MP Game, Middle age

Its been nearly two weeks since he has posted anywhere on the forums. He has (Along with R'lyeh before he was switched) been the last one left before the host for the last couple turns.

Generally if your the last before the host, you are the first after the host. he just has been stale for many days. My guess is vacation, or loss of computer access, or something that would keep him away from computer/internet for an extended period.

Either way, he is making this game drag something serious.
