Re: Oceania joins the fray

Um - as far as I can tell, the patch didn't fix a damn issue, bugwise or gameplay wise. I'd prefer playing unpatched, and suggest that those players who patched without saving a copy of the original, should uninstall and re-install.

Edit : _and_ it would be nice to know whether we're playing patched / unpatched before we submit our pretenders. Suggest pushing back to Tuesday since it's up in the air now.

Re: Oceania joins the fray

I like how Solo handles the patch-issue in the other MP-game I am currently playing.

He keeps a copy of the previous turn-files and if a Horror attacks the turn will be rehosted. But with this number of players it might be quite a hassle...

Personally I would prefer the patched version, but would have no problems with installing a pre-patched version (should be no problem to have both a patched and an unpatched version on one harddisk or am I wrong ?).

PashaDawg November 6th, 2006 09:56 AM

Patch?

I will delay starting until Tuesday.

So far most players want to start WITH the patch. So, unless more players express concerns, we'll use the patch.

In any case, I will make sure players have enough time to submit replacement pretenders, etc.

calmon November 6th, 2006 09:58 AM

Re: Patch?

To prevent people crying and stop playing because their pretender dies in a horror attack in turn 2 i would prefer a start without the patch.

But here we've the problem that i'm not sure that all players could install a second 3.0 Version of the game.

An illwinter coment about a hotfix would be very good!

CharonJr November 6th, 2006 10:39 AM

Re: Patch?

Will try to install a 2nd Dom version with 3.00 later today. If this is no problem I would tend to favour the non-patched version now since it would indeed be bad to lose people due to this bug.

And yes, a comment concerning a hotfix would be good.

There wasn't a decision that we play with 3.0

You're certainly welcome to join. You could stay with Oceania or replace Nerfix.

Patch?

I am coming around to thinking it would be best to NOT start with the patch. I know that is very inconvenient for some players. However, it sounds like the horror-bug could seriously frustrate players and spoil the fun.

If we know beforehand that getting into the Hall of Fame can be lethal IMHO it should be fine.

Re: Patch?

Well, while knowing beforehand that you'll get eaten by a grue if you get to the HoF certainly makes for a quaint environment, it's not necessarily tremendously unbalancing even if some nations benefit more from an active pretender than others and thus are at a disadvantage from the condition. You could still risk it with an awake pretender on research-duty until the next patch I guess (It could come early and thus give you the advantage over those who didn't risk it)... But that would be quite costly a gamble if you only got research (and not provinces as usual) out of your pretender in the first 12 turns. Nations like Niefelheim and Yomi and others that have expensive commanders that are in danger of getting into the HoF easily might want to rethink their strategies also.

That said, the bug makes for a silly game no matter which way I look at it, so I'd prefer to play unpatched. You need to reinstall the game to a temp directory to get access to the unpatched executable, but that can't be so big a hassle as to prevent anyone from doing so if they are willing to commit to a game that will probably last for several months. Also note that as far as I know the only problems you'll be likely to encounter if the host has a different version of the game are battle-replay related and only under certain rare conditions at that. So it shouldn't be impossible to play the game with the host running unpatched and the lazy part of the players running the patched version.

If you want we can play with the patch and without pretenders killed by the hunter in turn 2. Just use the Hunter of Heroes nerf mod I've posted, he will eventually attack but has 10 hp and Light Inf. stats.

Yes! Great work, Twan! I was just about to replace him with Dick Cheney (with a rifle and low prec) to fix the issue, but you beat me to it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Awesome, let's use the mod and the patched version of the game!

And welcome Cactus! Will CUnknown be getting the game as well? Would be fun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Mictlan,
I've never played Mictlan, but well....I'll give it a try.

It's been over a year since Dom2. Just make a pretender, and E-mail him to you? Bet I'd remember what to do if I didn't drink so much.

Yeah, just make a pretender and mail it to Pasha: you might want to first see which way this swings, tho', since the game will be very different with the patch, unless Twan's fabulous mod is used http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Ok!

As the all powerful host, I have decided (after consulting with players) that we will play this game WITH the patch and Twan's mod!

Thank you Twan.

I don't know if pretenders must be created with the patch, but it might be safer to create them WITH the patch. And, all players are encouraged to send me updated versions of their pretenders.

Hopefully, we can start on Tuesday.

Unless you make a pretender without the patch that you would not be able to make with the patch, it shouldn't matter (and I don't think any pretenders were changed?)

Patch with mod sounds very good to me. I think my pretender (made under 3.01) should still work.

Twan November 7th, 2006 07:37 AM

Re: Patch?

Normally pretenders work as the mod change nothing for them (I can create a game with the mod and a pretender saved before at least).

Edit : You'll need the mod to play, but not to have it enabled (see the calmon message). Activating a mod in the preferences just say to the program "use this mod for the newly created games".

calmon November 7th, 2006 08:36 AM

Whats status in moment. Which Pretenders are missed?

YellowCactus is Mictlan
Migaaresno is Oceania
Teraswaerto is C'Tis
now, right?

A little bit in rush because i'm away on 21.-26. november and i don't want a sub for the first 10 turns (the dailys).

CharonJr November 7th, 2006 08:49 AM

Re: Patch?

BTW, would a horror attack on a unit which is supposed to move have the potential to stop that move like an attack of an army into this province ?

If this is the case the bug could still be annoying due to missing/delaying some important moves.

HELHEIM EXCLUDED FROM THE GAME.

Tuesday is today

and you didn't need the mod to make your pretender, it works with 3.01 (maybe 3.00). But here i'm not 100% sure.

You'll need the mod to play the game!

Sorry to be a pain everyone, I want the game to start as soon as possible...

BUT

Will using this mod effect the other 4 MP games I am in at the moment? They r not using the mod but r using v3.01. Obvously if it will I can not take part in this game, which is a shame as I really wanted too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Can I have the mod enabled just for Dawnstrike and disabled for the other 4? Already have seperated v3.00 from v3.01 so I can play either.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Re: You received my pretender?

I think I've made an involuntary test yesterday... I've finished and sent my orders for our cradle game with the mod enabled I think. So... if Adam has a problem resolving the turn, mods should be disabled. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

calmon November 7th, 2006 10:01 AM

Re: You received my pretender?

As far as i know from Dom2 you just install the mod and the game checks if you receive a trn file whether to use or not to use the mod.

So there are no problems using/not using mods in different games. You just need the mod (you don't need it as preference!)

EDIT: Yes, it works. Just copy the hhnerf.dm (twans mod) in the mod directory. Thats it! You don't use them for your new started games and you don't use it for every other mp game which doesn't use the mod.

You just use it for our mp game here. Thats all will be proved automatically by the game.

PashaDawg November 7th, 2006 10:19 AM

Re: You received my pretender?

Yup. The Dawnstrike game will check for the mod, but your other MP games will not.

Cool, all systems go then, will install mod (well done on this Twan http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif), PashaDawg will stick with my pretender I have already sent u, from what I have read the mod will have no effect on my pretender.

So I am happy to start ASAP...how about everyone else?

Finally cheers and thanks for PashaDawg for hosting and getting us throu those patch problems... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: You received my pretender?

Hi All:

PLEASE INCLUDE "Dawnstrike" IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF ALL EMAILS ABOUT THIS GAME. I USE A EMAIL FILTER TO HELP ME KEEP TRACK OF THE EMAILS. THANKS.

I have received pretenders from:

Abysia
Acro
Atlantis
Ermor
Kailasa
Marerni
Mictlan
Neifelheim
Pangaea
Sauromantia
Tien Chi
Ulm
Yomi
Rlyeh

I have not heard from Stossel, who signed up as Vanheim. I will send him a 2nd PM, but if he does not respond by the time I get home for lunch, then someone else could have Van if they really want it. (If he shows up tonight, I will give him back his slot, but I want to give other players a chance to lay claim to the slot.)

I have no way of knowing which pretenders where made with 3.0 or 3.01, except for players' email messages. So, if you are unsure, you might want to send me a replacement pretender. (It might not matter, but I would prefer not to chance it and then restart the game.)

Finally, I have increased the number of VP provinces (one per player), but I have left the total cumulative points needed to win at 13. I think that is fine, because it still means taking VP's from other players. (Let me know if you object.)

I am crossing my fingers that we can start the game tonight!
