Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
My concept of a "Casual PBEM" is along the lines of no hosting schedule at all, but if everyone agrees that X is taking too long, the turn is hosted anyway. (which figures out to 2-3 turns a week)
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I think a set schedule of some sort is best--anywhere from once to 3X per week?
Leaving things indefinite is going to encourage straggling. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Hi all
It's a lot of people indeed, and thus quite likely there will be delays. Just looking at my situation: I could probably play 2 to 7 turns a week, depending on my Real Life activities http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif. But there will definitely be times and can't make a turn for a whole weekend (though that will not be often), and I'm planning a 10-day skiing holiday somewhere in the coming 2 months (but that's just once). That's why I tried to set up the Casual Game. If the 10-day holiday is problematic, I could transfer control to another player for that period, and skip a few turns. Not so good for my strategic planning of course, but hey, at least I'll save some gold ;-) I agree with some here that if certain people are consistently delaying the game, we should host anyway, or if it gets really out of hand, replacing him with a computer player, if everyone agrees. I'll set up a master password for such a case (don't worry, I see no fun at all in cheating). Let's just see how it goes for now and find out what the 'natural' pace is and go from there. For the next 2 weeks, I can probably play a turn each evening. I'll try and start the game tomorrow evening (GMT). I contacted Manuk by email and personal message some times, but he has not responded yet. He sent a pretender last week but it was already taken by Micah. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
yeah, and the last thing I want to have to worry about while being casual is consensus-building over how long is too long =)
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Caelum pretender sent.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
How about it just hosts whenever the host gets all the files; with 3 days being the max for a stale without an excuse/notification?
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
We can start the game.
As it's my first time, just to be sure: Which files should I send you now, and then each turn? I have: - ftherlnd - both map files (.rgb and .map) - all .trn files - all .2h files |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
You must send the .rgb and .map files so that players have the map. You must also send the .trn files (the *turn* files) to all players. We, the players, after making our moves will send you the .2h files which you put in the game folder (by the way tell us the name of the game also). You host, and then send us the .trn files.
Rinse and repeat. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Thx Sorlakind.
I am sending the files to all of your email addresses in a 5 MB ZIP file. The game name is: CasualPBEMGame1 Let me know if you did not receive it! Have fun! |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Didn't get it.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I don't know, my thought is for nice casual game a 10 day break (or whatever) should be fine, no big deal. The idea of having a set hosting schedule is to keep the game moving along at a reasonable pace whenever there is not a reason not to, but we can be pretty flexible as long as we're not just wondering if we're ever gonna hear back from somebody. FWIW, I second the suggestion for a 3 day max turn window without an excuse/reason. I'd also suggest that everbody try to take their turns as fast as they comfortably can whenever they don't have a reason not to...which is to say it'd be nice if some turns took less than 3 days. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
redoing it with gmail account right now.. hotmail was EXTREMELY slow...
I really should sleep now so if this does not work I'll do it in the morning. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I did get your test, just not any files(my email is johnarryn@hotmail.com).
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I got your "test" e-mail this time
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
ew, you don't want to post your email address like that out in public, bots scan the web for email addys and add you right to spam lists. Its usually a good idea to post something like:
My address is johnarryn at hotmail dot com...humans can read it but bots can't. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Quote:
What do you mean by slow? When sending a file via hotmail, what happens is that the file is uploaded to the server and then delivered to all accounts. If you have a low upload bandwith it will be slow no matter you use hotmail or gmail (or any other method by that matter). But I suspect you know all this. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Yup I know, but my connection is quite fast.
I've now sent the 5 MB file using gmail again, this time it worked. Turn files won't be so large so we should be fine. Have fun! |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I got your Email with the 5mb attachment.
You don't need to send all the .trn files, just the one for the specific nation that player is playing. If someone didn't setup a password, then someone could use his .trn file to access his nation and get free intelligence. (though I suspect the criminially minded could also do this to a passworded file). I can see however why it would be easier to just zip it all up and send everyone the same thing. (And since I'm password protected, I'm not that worried http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif) |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
hmm... It's quite a lot more work to send 16 emails, each with a different attachment, than just one email to all of you, with one zipped attachment. I'd quite prefer to keep sending all of the .trn files.
You all did use a password, right? And you're all sort of grown up enough not to want to cheat, right? :-P Note to all: please put the game name, nation name and turn number in the subject line, makes it a bit easier for me to keep track later in the game. Thanks! (for lazy people, abbreviations are also fine, e.g. 'Casual arco 1') |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Well, I'm no grown up, but I'm also no cheater http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I admit that I forgot the password... but I believe that you won't cheat. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
RicoRico, should we send the .2h files to your hotmail or the gmail address?
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I sent my turn back in without checking the forums first, so I didn't put nation and turn in the subject line. I'll try to do so for the future, but just hitting "reply" is such a tempting shortcut http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
For PBEM games I always just hit reply. i put nation and turn number in the body.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
12 of you already sent their turn, all of them to my GMail account. So, let's keep it at that account for now then :-)
Would be nice indeed to have some script to make things faster indeed.. if anyone knows of something useful, it'd be great! |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Would someone PM me with the host's gmail address, please? I've got my turn, but deleted the email before I took note of the address.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players) *DELETED*

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Hi FAJ.. Would you mind editing your post and rewriting my emailaddress using 'at' in stead of @... For the spambots ;-)
I got the last .2h file just now. I'll host the turn when I get home from work! |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Turn 2 is sent..
Something strange though.. How can Arcoscephale have 10 commanders in the Hall of Fame? Weird? |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I've seen the weird Arco thing before in other multiplayer games in which Arco wasnt even playing. I think for some weird reason when there isnt anyone to put in the Hall of Fame yet, the Hall of Fame is filled by default with guys it says belongs to Arco.
Anyway, Arco (are they even in the game?) doesn't have all those guys in the hall of fame. Its just a strange bug. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I'm playing as arco, I have no idea what units those are, they aren't mine for sure.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
ah well... just looked strange ;-)
13 out of 16 people's turns are in! |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
a bit dissapointed, read you mes before I got the turn, was hoping 10 heroes had showned up or something =)
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
:-P bit of a bummer I imagine yes
When Vanheim sends the turn I'm ready to host |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
IIRC Arco has the lowest id number, so that would explain why the mysterious champions belong to Arco (though not why they appear in the first place)
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Any updates?
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Still waiting for Kyosti's Vanheim turn..
I'll send him an email to check |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Yes, sorry to keep you waiting. The turn is now sent.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Great! I hosted and sent turn 3 to all of you.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
>_<
I keep getting confused between this and another PBEM I'm in. I keep forgetting which one I've submitted my turn for and which one I didn't. (I was worried for a second there when I saw you hosted turn 3) |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
:-)
can imagine... maybe keep your Sent Emails, so you can check? |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
15 out 16 have sent turn 3 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Just Oceania and it's go. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
When should we apply the new patch?
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Still waiting on Oceania?
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
yeah.. he's not answering my email and PM....
Perhaps we should try and post a message if we know we're going to be late. |
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I'd say apply the patch after you have sent turn 3, so most of you can patch now.. I'm still checking if I should patch before or after I host...
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
Patch *after* hosting the current turn.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
I checked the patching question in the manual (sorry I was lazy before).. says all of you should finish the current turn using 3.04, then I should patch before I host, and then all of you should patch before you load the .trn.
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
It really doesnt matter that much if you host with 3.06 and they send in 3.04 turns... it occasionally makes something slightly weird happen, but nothing game-breaking, in my experience
|
Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)
What shall we do about Oceania?
