Re: A Map List

Thanks for the help but it isn't quite what I'm looking for. A map done from a satellite image would look pretty bad for what we're trying to do. Also the map has the problems of too much Mexico and Caribbean and not enough Canada/Alaska which would cause gameplay problems with what we're going for. We're going for a medieval feel and also one that encompasses the geographic areas of the Society. When I create the provinces they will reflect the naming conventions, resources and population of the Society.

Something like the maps Jason Lutes did would be wondrous or even just in the style of the stock random maps in the game.

Thanks a lot for the help anyway.

Finding a satellite-based image that would make a good map, adding white dots for province centers and releasing an early version of your scenario would help a lot, IMHO. If someone likes your initial scenario, they might help you finish it, and if they already know what you'd like to have for geography, they'll have easier time making something you're happy with.

I think it would be relatively easy (== hard, but doable) to re-paint that into a map with spesific style. In fact, I think the mountain, forest etc icons used by the random maps have been released IIRC, so it might be possible to even do it yourself - any graphic program with layers would let you have the satellite image in one layer, and then you just paste the mountain icons on top of the mountains, trees on top of the forests etc, then put the beige ground color between the icons and the satellite image.

You might also want to look for antique maps of Northern America. This site would be a good start:

Re: A Map List

Is the map collection still being updated? I'd like to add a few reviews from the maps I played, but there seems to be little feedback on the page itself.

lch March 30th, 2008 11:57 AM

Re: A Map List

Feedback doesn't go into the map collection thread but into the actual thread from the map itself. Reviews can be posted to the Wiki site, too, that would be very good.

Re: A Map List

I think any more discussion of this should go into a separate thread. Now that I've thought about it, this thread is the definitely the wrong place for it.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Hello boys and girls.

I've been away for a while, and now I find the forums have changed quite a bit.

I was trying to download the Pangaea map, as it looks potentially very nice for a multiplay game. I get a redirect, and then nothing.

A little help?

Re: A Map List

The Shrapnel folks are working on a fix to update all of the old links this weekend. If for some reason this process fails, I will eventually update them manually.

Update:
10 additions to the map list.

I had let updates slide since the map wiki was available, but while playing around with the new search features (like tags & prefixes), I decided to add the maps that had been posted in this thread and a few of my own old maps.

This list remains by no means complete.

Update:
32 additions to the map list.

I went page by page through the Dom3 map forums over the last few days and made a best effort to bring the map list up to date. If you see a map that I missed please let me know.

There were several maps for which I could find no existing image previews, so I am uploading them here.

Now every map (with the exception of the Cradle & Parganos fixed maps) should have a preview image below the link to their respective forum threads.

Ah! Thanks Edi. I will just remove the link from the list.

@KO,
Thanks! I even found a few really nice maps that I had forgotten about during my travels. :p

It seems you forgot the big version of World of Geometry (World of Symetry is a non scenarized and smaller version).

Thanks! World of Geometry has been added.

@Everybody
If you see a map that I have missed, please post a link to it's thread here. This list is primarily for non-random maps (unless there is an outcry to add nice random maps generated by the game).

Thanks for your help. :)

Hey, I'm looking for a map I played a couple of years ago and I can't find anymore: a very large map with a huge central landmass, surrounded by elemental-themed realms (fire, death...)

if anyone knows which map I mean, please let me know.
many thanks in advance...

I made a few wrap-around maps that I'm proud of, and I'll be making more. The last two are good enough to share because I used hexagon or pentagon grids instead of free-hand borders. I don't have a web page to post links, and I can't seem to find a site where I can upload them. Any suggestions?

Unless they're over the size limit, the most straightforward way is to do as most of the others in this list have done and put them in a zip archive and post them directly in a new thread in this maps/mods subforum (using the file attachments feature.)

Make sure to put the attachments in the first post of the thread so you can update it later if necessary (for fixes, etc.)

Re: A Map List

Thanks. I can do that. I just need to work out one little thing first - one map has a small island surrounded by sea that I want as a possible start site. I can't get the Province Editor to work (& I downloaded the visual basic per the readme.) I can almost figure out the code to modify a couple provinces manually, but there's still a lot of guessing. I can make a "known feature" site that allows the recruitment of amphibians, so the start wouldn't be completely isolated (If I can figure out which site does that), or I can play around with it until I can figure out how to make some amphibs recruitable naturally in a neighboring province.

(I'm proud of the appearance of the maps, but I depend on Semi-Random to add the flavor to it. But my problem requires order in this case, and not chaos.)

Islandwrap
&
Long Stretch

These are both small wrap-around maps with a long stripe of land surrounded by an equal part water. The water provinces are larger, though, so the land/sea balance is on par with the norm. You'll want to run these through Semi-Random, as I did very little tweaking of the provinces manually other than the appearance of the map.

Those are some nice looking maps wilphart, thanks for sharing them :)

Although think both of them might have too many water provinces (or too high of a land:water ratio) to be used that often in MP games, unless they were specialised Land v Water games or some such. Since playing water natons in MP games is not that popular. Shame, as IMO both of your maps are friendlier on the eyes than most regular maps.

Wasnt there, at somepoint, a map project from devs, or either one of them, titled something like "the map that will never be"?`

Whats up with that?
