I heard back from Echodyne, who's having some technical difficulties, which I think we should be able to sort out. Still waiting for the other two...

I'll play as C'tis if you guys need someone?

Can't upload any pretenders until tomorrow morning though.

Cool, thanks parcelt.

(I asked on SmokyBat if anyone would transfer to this game to replace the MIA people, although I still hope they may still turn up - plenty of space on the map).

Apologies for the slow start guys, I can't believe no fewer than three players disappeared! Doesn't normally happen. Anyway, parcelt and probably IndyPendant are going to join (and I hope at least Echodyne will too), so we should be able to get started pretty soon.

Send it to pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net, and make sure to include 'Chinchilla' in the subject line.

I think it's definitely time to write off the no-shows. They haven't given us the courtesy of letting us know what's going on. I don't think they need the courtesy of having the game held for them.

Maybe we should change the thread title to looking for x players?

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

Okay, Tien-Chi in this Chinchalla game it is, then. I'm at work, so when I get home later tonight I'll create and email a Pretender.

I do have some experience playing a game with a coworker--but we have only played as allies against the computer. So I know all about how the turns work in MP, but this will be my first game playing against devious, manipulative, fiendishly intelligent *humans*. I'm (mostly) not joking when I say I expect to lose, and badly. I haven't even read up on the forums to check tactics. I really should...

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

Looking forward to this.

I am recently into 2 MP games, there is lots of good info and strategy in the forums. Searching by what you want/race etc. works well.
Who you calling devious!?

Pretender sent, llamabean. I assume I'm still on for this game as Tien-Chi?

One request: could you please *please* PLEASE turn renaming on? Tien-Chi has so many magic path options, I've taken to naming my mages for their paths, because it was driving me *NUTS* having to click on each. and. every. mage. I. built. to find the one(s) with the path I needed.

Please. : )

Edit: Heh. And then I read up above that Tien-Chi is considered relatively weak for MA MP. Anyone know why? I'm curious, because I found them quite strong in SP play... (I'll still be playing them in this game regardless, however.)

sum1lost June 29th, 2007 11:37 PM

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

I'm guessing it might be a lack of high level mages? I'm not sure, I've never really seen them as all that weak either.

Also, if it is okay with everyone, I'd like to start quicklyish/soon.

llamabeast June 30th, 2007 05:22 AM

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

llamabean?!

Yep, renaming's on.

Since this game's been taking forever to start, I reckon we should start now - 12-14 players was my target after all. I'll get it going in the next hour or two...

Edit: IndyPendant: Thanks for getting your pretender in so fast, that was great. I don't know why T'ien Ch'i are considered weak. I took a quick peek at them and they look quite good.

You know, you should try hitting F1. It works wonders to find just the mage that you want.

Okay, we're starting! You should get the first turn in the next couple of minutes. Let me know if there's any problems.

I just arbitrarily decided to use the Worthy Heroes mod, because it's fun. I hope that's okay with everyone. It just adds some interesting national heroes to each nation, and makes sure every nation has some heroes. I'll attach it to this post. Just unzip it and place the contents in your dominions3/mods folder.

The first turn will have a 48 hour timer in case anything goes wrong, subsequent turns will have 24 hours. The first turn only takes about a minute though, so we definitely shouldn't need the 48 hours (unless something goes wrong, of course).

Edit: Fixed the attached mod file for the naming error I mention further down in the thread.

Inevitably I bungled the start. Hang on a few minutes...

llamabeast June 30th, 2007 07:57 AM

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

I decided to place the start positions by hand. I'd just like to say it's impossible, so when you end up with a weird start position please bear that in mind! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Actually only one person is starting in a genuinely odd position with only three neighbours, and I'm going to add an iron mine to one of the adjacent provinces to make it better for them.

Edit: Not true in the end, I managed to put everyone in a reasonable spot I think.

well, i can't get it to work.
"you need the following mod installed: heroes1_7.dm",
after i unzipped all the mod files to my \mod\.

just let you know, that mod worked if i play it in a test run. and meh, i don't appreciate a mod at last minute...really. no offensive, but it would make me happy if i knew there's one earlier, so i can adjust my pretender design....you know, the luck/misfortune things. =)

Heya,
Getting same error:
"you need the following mod installed: heroes1_7.dm",
after i unzipped all the mod files to my \mod\.

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

AreWeInsaneYet: Point taken, sorry about that. I will make sure to make mods clear from the start in future.

As for the mod trouble, that's because I was being thick. In the zip I uploaded the mod was called heroes1_7b.dm, where as it should be called heroes1_7.dm. Oops. I'll change the attachment in a sec. But you can fix it by just renaming the file and getting rid of the "b" in the name.

Salamander8 June 30th, 2007 12:18 PM

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

Hmmm...
Mine worked, but I've had worthy heroes installed for some time.

Sleet June 30th, 2007 12:21 PM

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

Tried it again, and noted the mod downloaded is heroes1_7b.dm

The one the game asks for is heroes1_7.dm

No b in the game mod.

This I assume may be the issue?

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

Hrm. Wait, so if I understand it correctly, this mod improves the national heroes *and* allows each nation multiple copies of each hero?

Bah. Tien-Chi heroes are particularly desireable too. And I took Misfortune-3, which I definitely wouldn't have done if I had known that mod was going in.

Ah well. I'll deal, I guess. Would like to second the mild annoyance at a last-minute, unannounced mod though. Uploading the turn in a short bit, once I figure out how to apply the mod (I never have, yet) and get the turn done. : )

llamabeast June 30th, 2007 03:24 PM

Re: Chinchilla - Game for new/newish players (open

Yeah, fair point, I'm sorry guys. It hadn't even crossed my mind that it might affect pretender design (just because it's never crossed my mind when I've been designing my pretenders I guess). It doesn't make heroes more common, but on the whole they become slightly more powerful. Anyway, sorry again for that. At least, bear in mind that even if you took luck-3 you might not get a hero for a long time (6% chance a turn), and you've saved 240 design points. But I realise it would be far better to know about the mod before the game started since with hindsight it could obviously influence your choices.

I wanted to say that I am going to Vegas tomorrow, but will have my laptop with me (because work required it, grrrrr). I hope not to hold up the game too much, but time at Vegas seems to run together. I apologize ahead of time.

Also, I may not be really communicative at the beginning of the game because of this trip. Please don't hold that against me. Now, if you hold being in a city surrounded by beautiful people with little clothing, good food, booze, poker, and swimming pools against me, that I will understand.

Have a good game.

Yep, that's the right address. Do you mind if I make a strange request though - any chance you could edit that post to get rid of/mash up the address? Just because I don't want it getting picked up by too many spam bots. Thanks!

My new turn is sent too. Thanks llama*beast* for restarting. (Sorry about that 'bean' thing; old name I used to know on the net, slipped through the mental filters.)

Please note that I'm not opposed to mods; I just would prefer to know about them in advance, is all.

Hmm, "...communicative at the beginning..." --Is there some sort of etiquette for MP games? Should I have been sending "HiHowAreYou" messages to everyone, trying to butter them up to backsta--err, ally with them later on...? I wonder if I've just alienated everyone from the get-go? : )
