Sheesh. How crowded can one little isthmus be? I can see me, Ermor, Abysia, Fomoria, and now TC is knocking practically right on my door. I'm afraid this game has a really bad case of unequal start positions. *Someone* must have a bunch of room to expand - and they are the odds-on favorite to win the game. Kind of sad to know this already by turn 8.

There are two lucky guys among us: Ulm & Mictlan. Ulm may just see TC now; Mictlan even doesn't see anyone else...

Turn timing:

Arco's turn has been resent.

everz requested a delay Friday evening from 9pm to 11pm. As I am an early morning person, I may not run the turn before Saturday morning.

If the Friday hosting is done Saturday, I'll probably relax the Saturday deadline and slide into Sunday. On the other hand, if everyone makes it anyway, I will probably host.

Turn Return

Interesting. The original turn showed up at 3:48a...I'll blame my ISP. They are HIGHLY blameable. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Turn 9 played and the .2h sent back.

A delay for the next turn is fine, but I know that the Arco turn will be in before 10p Sat night!

Now, is there any way to guarantee a GOOD event? So far I've been slammed by bad luck...and no luck scales, good or bad, are present in my provinces.

djo December 14th, 2007 09:04 PM

crowds

Having taken a close look at the map, and integrated what people have reported here with my own observations...holy cow, that is an uneven distribution of territory! Ulm and Mictlan must feel like the Americas before the Europeans over there.

Contrariwise, this is a victory point game, and there are more VPs where there are more nations. So you can think of that as an advantage, if you like.

Fortunately, there is a simple answer to the crowding issue, which is to exterminate your neighbors. I encourage everyone to get on with it!

What you need is to buy lots of seers.

With my luck Ulm and Mictlan will have a short war of extermination and I'll be staring at a post WWII U.S.A. I, on the other hand, plan to win this game by buying victory points from the other nations with pretty gems and lots of love slaves.

double digits

Turn 10 has gone out.

Official deadline for next turn: 9pm Sunday

Unofficial deadline: if all turns are in by Saturday evening, I will host on the original schedule. No pressure, though. Due to general crowding of the map, I understand if you want the full 24 hrs for your turn.

Future schedule: we will be in 3 turn/week mode by the holidays (Tues/Thurs/Sun). Please post here regarding how much we need to slow down or pause.

public apology

It's time for me to admit some of my own stupidity here...

(Let me throw in some icons so Pasha will understand: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif)

It has just been pointed out to me by one of the players that Fomoria actually has 2 VP in its capital. I honestly did not even notice it--the graphics on the map are pretty close together, and I didn't think it was even possibly under these victory settings. If I had noticed on turn one, I would have offered to restart the game.

Can't do that now, though, and I hope no one feels cheated. All I can do is make sure everyone knows it, so people know that Fomoria is twice as valuable a target now.

I invite further comments on the issue if it bothers anyone.

Turn 13 is out. Orders are due Tuesday at 9pm.

djo December 18th, 2007 10:18 PM

upcoming schedule

Turn 14 has been emailed. Orders due Wednesday, 9pm.

We are about to move to the 3 turns/week schedule, which will be Tues/Thurs/Sunday. Unless there are objections, I will run 15 on Wed, then 16 immediately on Thursday, then the next one on Sunday the 23rd.

For the holidays: no turn on Tuesday the 25th. Does anybody object to picking up again on Thursday the 27th? Or shall we pause a little longer?

Let me know your preferences. I wouldn't mind a pause, as I'll be visiting and only have access to email via website via dial-up, which makes mass email a bit of a pain.

PashaDawg December 18th, 2007 11:56 PM

Re: upcoming schedule

Whichever is fine with me, but I will have family visiting. So a break would be welcome but not necessary.

Re: upcoming schedule

I'm easy. Home for the holidays with only short day trips. But no problem with a break either.

djo December 19th, 2007 10:15 PM

Re: upcoming schedule

Turn 15 has been emailed. Next orders are due Thursday, 9pm. This is the last of the daily turns!

I emailed one possible holiday schedule. Let me know what you prefer. So far we have 3 mild votes for a break (beyond the definite "no turn on Xmas" break).

Re: upcoming schedule

I'm on vacation now and the only reason my turn might get in today is because I have my sister cooking me breakfast while I make my moves.

I don't mind a slowish vacation schedule as long as I know what the days are.

How about this schedule:

Thursday Dec. 20 (tomorrow)
Sunday Dec. 23
(nothing Tues. Dec. 25)
Thurs. Dec. 27
Sun. Dec. 30
Tues. Jan 1

Tues/Thurs/Sun thereafter

I will have visiting in-laws, but I will be able to squeeze in a few minutes here and there, so any schedule works for me.

djo December 20th, 2007 07:58 PM

Re: upcoming schedule

I am hearing that most people expect to be able to play turns, but most people (including me) would not mind more of a slowdown than skipping one turn at Xmas. So let me propose another plan:

Turns on:

Thur. Dec. 20 (tonight)
Mon. Dec. 24
Fri. Dec. 28
Tues. Jan. 1

...and Tues/Thur/Sun thereafter. Sound good? Especially over the holidays, I won't host without everyone's orders.

Turn 16 has been emailed. We now begin "relaxed holiday schedule 2.0".

Turns will be hosted Monday the 24th and Friday the 28th, then back to Tue/Thur/Sunday starting Jan. 1.

Don't worry about being late for turns. I will not host unless all turns are in. Relax and have a happy holiday.

Turn 17 has been emailed. Let me know if there are any problems; I'm not at my usual computer while traveling, so the possibility is higher than usual.

Next orders are due on Friday, Dec. 28. If you can't make it, that's OK, we'll delay. Let me know if you know you will be late.

Turn 18 is out. Next orders are due Tuesday, Jan. 1 at 9pm. We will then resume the Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday schedule.

On the fields of Ermor two great armies met in battle. While the Ermorians fought well and fireballs fried many giants, nothing could stop the Fomorians. The survivors prepare for one final counter attack but all hope appears lost...

Well I don't think I'll be in this game much longer. Thanks to everyone and especially to djo for hosting. I guess that makes up for him crushing me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

My DSL is down, so hosting will be delayed until Verizon gets its act together. (I'm posting this from my phone.)

Clearly you need to upgrade that phone and ditch Verizon DSL!

back on track

My DSL problems are gone. Turn 22 just went out. Since we've got an extra day to play with over the weekend, let's push the Thursday hosting to Friday, to keep a two day separation between turns. If anyone can't make that schedule, let me know.

Next orders are thus due 9pm Friday.

Only waiting on Ulm...I'll host early Saturday if the turn arrives.

Re: back on track

The turn has been hosted but not emailed...Ermor seems to have half-disappeared. I am verifying that Ermor has gone AI before sending the turns out, in case something else weird happened. (Ermor has no turn, has disappeared from the turn-screen, but I see Ermor on the map. Without graphs, that's my best explanation.)

Ermor is now AI, though not quite dead.

Dead nation

I'm setting Tir na n'Og AI this turn. I tried to break out of my crap starting position by attacking Formoria while he attacked Ermor's capital. I figured I might get lucky and they would bloody each other enough (or I could get *really* lucky and Ermor would win, I was 100% certain my thunderstriking mamas could beat Ermor). But I couldn't thunderstrike enough to take down the blessed giants. A super-crowded space like mine was no place to be without a big bless, and I don't see Tir as playing well with a bless strategy.

On top of the crowding, I had all kinds of bad luck. Some (barbarian attacks, armies of trolls, burned lab) due to my Order 3 Misfortune 2 build. Others, though, were just plain bad luck. Like the horde of cataphracts in a province adjacent to my capital. Or the lizardman shaman with a soul contract 2 steps away. (By the time I dealt with him, he had 17 devils. I only got him by using a Bean Sidhe as a lightning-bolt throwing assassin).

Good luck to y'all, and a huge thanks to djo for hosting the game.

djo January 16th, 2008 08:10 PM

You certainly gave Fomoria a good pounding on the way out.

Thanks for the game, and see you in the next one.
