Heretic! Patala is nothing but awesome. Incredibly powerful mages, sacred astral researchers, elephants, it doesn't get much better than that.

I've never delved into Ry'leh, so it looks like I've got a good bit of reading and playtesting to do in the next couple days.

Which is the team composed of grade AA nations? I actually can't guess.

Re: Late Era Team Game

Well, it's hyperbole to some degree, but most the teams are somewhat strong/weak pairs. Bogarus (strong)/Atlantis weak), Mictlan/Abysia, Marignon/Pythium, Patala/C'tis, even Ry'leh/Man (though man is pretty nice too). Ermor and Agartha though... Ermor is almost in a class by itself, and Agartha is arguably the most powerful live LE nation.

Foodstamp March 13th, 2008 09:26 PM

Re: Late Era Team Game

It should be noted that Agartha will probably be played by one of the worst Dominion players of all time! Myself http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: Late Era Team Game

I would hope to start no earlier than late this weekend. I still need time to try and come to grips with crazy LA Pythium, and come up with some kind of decent build for them.

DrPraetorious March 13th, 2008 11:35 PM

Re: Late Era Team Game

I agree that R'lyeh/Man is pretty nice - but the other alternatives all struck me as worse (R'lyeh/Arco?R'lyeh/Utgard? R'lyeh/Caelum?), and R'lyeh/Midgard is just silly.

For Ermor's partner, I didn't want to give them too much non-death magic, and C'tis was taken.... it's very thematic, in any case. I'm not as impressed by LA Ermor as many people are, and while LA Agartha is one of my favorites, I've never thought they were that powerful. I'm prepared to be shown otherwise by the inestimable foodstamp, however http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I think we'll start late this weekend, if that's when people are comfortable. Monday is St. Patty's day, so I'll be wasted, but I can probably still manage to play.

Shovah32 March 14th, 2008 11:54 AM

Re: Late Era Team Game

Ermor/Agartha was something I was wondering about too...
I mean Ermors capitol alone is 7.5 Umbrals per turn, and any living nation being able to give Ermor gold...
I'm worried.

Pythium Pretender is ready. He has 50% understanding of what his nation can do, but I think that is about the best that is possible for LA Pythium.

Oh, okay. 15 size hall of fame.

The map file is attached. Pink team has to be R'lyeh - Gray team has to be Ermor/Agartha.

The other four starts will be randomly assigned - they are not scrupulously fair, but all of them border both R'lyeh (at least nominally) and Ermor.

I'm a little worried about the southern start (green) being too strong, but I had trouble trying to niggle everyone else south while giving them proper numbers of neighbors.

Only the host needs the .map file.

The .map file will also include which players are assigned to which start locations, assignments that I will not make until people have a chance to request changes to the map http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

If you dump into the dominions map folder, you should be able to view it by going "new map" and typing in the name of the rgb file. It won't have the province terrains and connections right, but you can at least look at the map.

Here's a jpeg.

How come the team in the bottom right corner's capitols are so far apart when everyone else is only 2 spaces.

Re: Late Era Team Game

No objections to the map. Looks fine to me.

DrPraetorious March 17th, 2008 12:56 AM

Re: Late Era Team Game

BDA - That was intended to compensate for the fact that the team in the lower right has, effectively, fewer neighbors. This makes them more vulnerable to the neighbors they do have, because they'll have a harder time defending one another. Other reason is that, if you look at that part of the map, few provinces have exactly 5 neighbors. I'm not sure if this is a net advantage or a death sentence.....

I could push the northern yellow capital a bit south, and the orange capitals a bit south, if people prefer - but the starts might have to be a bit funkier if I did that.

Re: Late Era Team Game

I will be pretty much unable to play until Friday. My video card in my PC died, and my Mac is very unstable playing Dominions. It reboots without warning after several minutes of playing the game.

I've been able to play my other MP games on my Mac by logging in, doing the bare minimum quickly, and logging out before the Mac reboots. But almost every game still requires several reboots before I can get my turn in.

A new video card has been ordered for my PC, and should be here by Friday. If we could wait to start til then, I would be most appreciative. If not, I can try to play turns on my Mac, but it will be iffy. Please feel free to replace me if this is a bother to the other players.

Re: Late Era Team Game

It's fine by me, so we'll wait until Friday, unless anyone objects.

We should try and keep things to a steady pace once we've actually started, however.

Okay, turns out that Marignon and Atlantis have to be given coastal starts (game will start them on coast even if I try to force them to start elsewhere!) Good thing I checked.

I have work to do and can't finish fiddling with this until tonight, but I'll get the map file and all to lch sometime tonight. Sorry for the delay.

Thanks for hosting, lch!

Lingchih March 19th, 2008 02:41 PM

Re: Late Era Team Game

I believe the game will accept a province bordering a large lake as a coastal start. That happened to me once in MP with LA Atlantis. I was placed next to such a lake, a good 12 provinces from the sea.

The finalized map, the map file (which only lch needs, but y'all can enjoy), and an empty mod which I'd like to use are all attached in a zip file.

The mod goes in your mods folder, the map goes in your map folder.

I propose that the game be QH with the first forced host in Monday night, to give people time to resolve any as-yet unknown technical difficulties.

Revolution March 20th, 2008 03:40 AM

Re: Late Era Team Game

I'm not too sure what color to call it...light yellow? anyhow the far right team (Marignon Pythium I think) it does not seem like the top person (marignon) would have much room to expand...and the bottom right of the map is very open. Perhaps the lower light yellow spot (pythiums start) should be moved down a couple provinces so they can better compete with green for the lower right of the map while allowing marignon more expansion room? In the first image of the map you showed it their start locations had been lower...you mentioned that marignon has to be coastal...but I think the other start could still be moved a bit lower.

I don't know...I could be crazy.

Also, out of curiosity, when I start a new game on the map on the starter provinces there are a couple magic sites that seem to be blank with the name "The Empty Slot" ...what are these?

Still like the map by the way, very nice work.
