Re: PBEM Game: BERING (Open for players)

You youngsters...I'm running Dominions 3 on a hand-built Babbage machine made of recycled toothpicks and bottle caps. It takes me three hours just to input the turn, never mind play it. I transmit my orders back to Pasha over a disused telegraph line. The dots and dashes hit the only Atari 800 connected to the Internet. It runs a ping server that forwards the dots and dashes to Pasha, who is kind enough to run an sh script (not tcsh, not bash, nothing fancy like that) which makes the final translation back to a .2h file.

I hope to upgrade next year to an awk script (if I can get awk to compile on my Babbage machine; I'm spending my vacation on it).

So all in all, I'm comfortable staying with the initially advertised and agreed-upon pace.

There are times when I am picking splinters out of my fingers and wondering which bit did I flip this time that I think it would be a kindness.

But you'll have to find me first...

by babbage do you mean the old video game and computer parts store babbages? i remember buying a 2meg's of ram upgrade there when i was a kid heh

also hey i wasn't threatening you I was just saying I could find you but that ... if anything... I AM THE ONE TAKING TURNS MOST SLOWLY! yes that's it! it's been me all along !

djo July 27th, 2008 08:02 PM

Re: Turn 8

The old computer store "Babbage's" was named after Charles Babbage, a 19th century Englishman who designed/invented mechanical calculation devices that were the forerunners of today's computers. They were meant to do things like calculate tables of logarithms and other tables of data important for engineering and ship navigation. You couldn't actually "program" them (the "program" they ran was determined by how they were put together), but they were revolutionary computation devices for their time.

So I was joking that I was running Dominions on a very old and slow mechanical machine. (On the other hand, some people build them as hobbies today!)

And since you are playing one of two water races, it's easy to figure out where you are. Don't worry, apes don't swim very well.

That's fine. I have your turn for turn 9 already, and so I don't expect the extension to cause much of a delay.

i can trade gems at better than 1:1 ratio depending on what supply you have (i need some earth/fire/air) so you might be able to get a favorable deal if you can give me exactly what i want... since if i get no trades at all i'll have to alchemize pearls

Let's see how this new forum-thingy works...

(Ouch, that text is small...good thing that is an already reported issue.)

Wow, I didn't notice that Atlantis was racing Lanka to the bottom. My sympathies.

What I think we all want to know, though, is: is Pasha :) or  with the new forum's palette of smilies?

[edit] And what exactly are all those "bookmarks" for?? Some kind of social networking that I am too old to understand?

Turn 20 is out.

djo: I did not like them at first. But, then I noticed that I get all of the old ones plus several new. Nice new pic of Dusty.

I don't like the silhouettes of the "cool" people in the ".com.unity". Who the heck are they??:eek::eek::doh:

Okay. Turn 20 is out.

Deadline is Thursday.

Please note that due to the early hosting this week, we're still ahead of our normal schedule.

I have to sympathize with our host; it's a lot easier to remember to host when the schedule matches that of all the other games you're involved in.

Re: BERING (Running)

turn?

Aezeal August 23rd, 2008 09:41 PM

Re: BERING (Running)

ouch this has GOT to hurt

On the right side: 5 Niefel Jarls with their subjects 30ish Niefel Giants, also backup with a Jotun scout/prophet and a priest (lvl2). The brave giants have also enlisted the fabled archer in white led by a pegasus rider in their army.

On the other side, the armies of darkness and demons.

About 25 PD in fodder as a screen in front of and between the demons, all misled markata's wanting to give their lives for the false god. Then some 50ish evil demons and half a dozen evil mages and their evil summons, 3 HUGE lumber constructs and several vile clockwork horrors.

The battle starts and right away the mercs move a bit to the front, not able to stay still as commanded. The giants, clinging to tactics stay behind their bravest leaders while the prophet blesses the entire army.. blessed giants, what can stop them.

But then the false prophet also blesses the already fearsome demon, they now seem very speedy, able to block every attack AND with improved stamina. A dark moment for the forces of good.

The next turns all the priests of good banish, doing some damage on the demons also destroying the undead summoned by the evil mages.

While the brave Jarls defend their kin with banishments the evil army advances, waves upon waves of the crazed, fanatic and in the end completely stupid markata advance towards the banishing Jarls. The Jarls are to busy banishing the demons and probably haven't even SEEN the stupid critters so their troops, the now blessed niefel giants advance to intercept the markata horde. While the markata are being slaughtered the Demons also advance behind this wall of small bodies. They overwhelm the leader of the mercenaries and kill some of the archers who then cowardly flee. After the Markata's have been vanquished (the giants all with tears in their eyes for they know the silly little monkeys do not know how they where misled, and now they face a useless death, not doing a single point of damage.) the real battle begins. The demons try to swarm the giants from the sides (in the centre the last of the dying markata fall on a huge pile of small dead bodies.) On the right flank the battle is especially brutal for there the clockwork horrors swipe their razorsharp talons at the frostgiants. The most combative of the Jarls move to help their kin while the other half keeps on banishing and doing major damage along with the priest and the prophet. A cleansing chime of a bell is heard from time to time and when heard some demons suddenly stop existing. The battle is fierce but in the end the giants have the longest breath, the cold is getting to the demons and one after another they fall before the huge and powerfull blows of the famed Jotunlongswords. The last of the demons fall before the holy giants of Jotun and the demon leaders flee the field running in panic while the valliant giants pursue.

A glorious day for the forces of good, but the giants also have losses. 3 of their comerades lie dead on the field. A huge cairn is erected and the giants are surrounded by the blades of fallen enemies. HUge numbers of demon falchions are put into the ground around the bodies inside the cairn. The prophet blesses the cairn so the fallen in this already epic battle will not be forgotten. May they rest in peace while the demons find a new hell to be tormented in by even greater evils.

Re: BERING (Running)

What canI say.. to say I'm sorry I'm ridding the world of the plague of your false prophet and it's demonic blooddrinking followers would be a lie... so I guess... DIE DIE DIE would be more fitting :D

I wonder about one thing though.. my report says your 7 commanders n mages didn't die but afaik they can't retreat to the castle... are they gone or do you still have them?

Nasty thingabout giants is that while they should rockat sieges it actually takes a hell of a long time cus there are so few... I guess you'll be summoning more lumber constructs and mechanical men.

Another thing.. did you actually patrol with the whole army all those turns I've been hanging around the capitol? (I though I was smart taking a few provs but not all I thaught you'd think I'd take those last 2 before taking the capitol)

Aezeal August 24th, 2008 11:11 AM

Re: BERING (Running)

PS demons and undead are pretty much screwed now you can mass produce cleaning bells and get 2 of themon commanders :D for only 5 watergems they deliver VERY high damage to demons. Of course their use is very situational but i think I'll mention in the cbm thread that 10 gems might be a better price.

Lanka isn't so bad. Some of the other monkey nations have the 700 defense "Crystal City" (or whatever it is). Try taking one of those down with nothing but normal human troops!

You did the right thing, in my opinion. I'm not going to give all my past plans away, but let's say that I was hoping to have the big battle while I still had a PD screen. Lot of good that did me!
