As Ulm?
Ghoul Guardians have MR 14 and get destroyed by banishment spam.

All blood summons have quite good MR
Demon Knights have MR 15.
Spine Devils and Serpent Fiends have MR 16.
Devils, Frost fiends, Fiend of Darkness or Storm Demons have MR 17

Otherwise many Sacreds can reach 15 MR with just a minor astral bless.

Vampires are great and worth the price, but sometimes they just don't reapear in their coffins even if killed in your own dominion.
Suicidal missions can surprise you more than your opponent when you find no one waiting for your orders next turn. :(

It sucks to be an aquatic nation when you are using Undead Mastery to steal vampire hordes. Too bad there isn't a spell to relocate your capitol! (Not the magic sites, just the province immortal units get resurrected in/seduced units go to/Returning units go to, etc.)

Re: Vampires - you should be afraid of the night

You could cast Blessing of Thetis and go from there...

But that kind of makes staying underwater risky.

Re: Vampires - you should be afraid of the night

Blessing of Thetis doesn't help vamps.

It doesn't? I thought it allowed all land units to go underwater. Do they drown when the respawn despite this?

Vampires are totally unable to go underwater. That's Illwinter's take on the old "can't cross running water" myth.

Hmm, I thought that was just for flavor, but, you learn something new every day.

Hmm, unless they changed it only normal movement into water was blocked (I didn't try vamps, but for the air queens) and you could get them there via cloud trapeze (just make sure it's to a coastal province or they can't get out), so I would be surprised if immortal resurrection didn't work to move them there...what you do with them from there is another story, of course.

Will Solar Brilliance Work as a counter for a Vampire squad? I think it counters Darkness and if the battle lasts long enough will blind (not sure how quickly immortality will healthis) and kill a lot of Vampires provided the battle lasts long enough.

generally immortals seem to heal around one afflicton per turn...

Re: Vampires - you should be afraid of the night

I just took over Pangaea with lots of vampires in MP. I thought that a vampire lord scripted with attack one turn, 4 x hand of death, with a few vampire bodyguards (to reduce chances of him being hit) would be a good defense against raiding thugs and SCs.

So, Lanka is raiding me with Dakainis and I set this up in a few provinces. First turn vampire lord and his bodyguards surround dakini and then instead of killing her with the hand of death, vampire lord casts soul vortex and disintegrates. He's in range of a touch spell.

I would imagine this to be a common tactic. Anybody else had his vampire lords refuse obedience?

I think it's ridiculous that vampire lords don't have 30 moral and can be routed in assassinations. If they die, they reappear in your capital, but if they retreat they are gone for good.

Re: Vampires - you should be afraid of the night

I think it's important to note that the Life Drain is -not- subject to an MR check. I just lost a nicely geared tart (buffed to 31 MR) to about 30 vampires in 2 combat rounds..... I feel very cheated. 8 \

Yeah, I saw. Haaahaahaa,
rush of strenth with an AP attack can be nasty.

Re: Vampires - you should be afraid of the night

I don't know what gave you the idea that life drain is MR. But your tartarian was very badly equiped, that's why he died. With the right equipment, he would of made short work of them (hint: vine shield).

Re: Vampires - you should be afraid of the night

Some Life Drain attacks are MR. For example, a Mind Lord's only melee attack is "Soul Leech", which is an AN+MR aoe-1 life drain attack.

I thought vine shield doesn't work against flyers?

He was very nicely equipped specifically to face your Disintegration spammers, and (I -thought-), your vampires. Had I known that the Life Drain was not MR, I certainly would not have sent him in there like that.

(EDIT - Vine Shield is so overappreciated. In this specific case, it may have been a better option, but if he could resist the Life Drain, the Lead Shield with the rest of the setup for 31 MR, would have been superb.)

I wanna see you resist pointy vampire fangs with the power of your mind. =)

I think it's really weird that the vampire fangs are AP. Is there any thematic justification for that?

JimMorrison April 3rd, 2009 08:51 PM

Re: Vampires - you should be afraid of the night

Fangs that can pierce through the armor of a towering tartarian, to destroy it in seconds?

Anyway, I wasn't just guessing here. :p In another game I've been battling hundreds of vampires with squads of Niefel Jarls, and they've hardly been scratched at all. I assumed from the performance, that it was because they were resisting the effect, rendering the vampires somewhat neuter.

Oh well, it's not like I've never lost a tartarian. :re:
