Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Val,
I really like that ship. I'd probably have to give the edge to Mark so far on the racepic though, so far. (Maybe I should have had seperete contests. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) Try making the person a little more alien looking. It doesn't have to be a cat head on a human body. Geoschmo |
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
If you like I could send Val the Poser file for the race pic... it will show what outrageous shortcuts and botches I use to make my pics though! Or, just use my race pic if you end up preferring it to others.
I don't mind not winning $10,000 (I know you are only offering $10, but I still won't win $10,000 will I?) |
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Actually, I prefer Marks race pic too, having a heck of a time with Poser, can't seem to find the animal figures, just people. (Scratch that, just found them - helps to read the instructions once in a while) Still playing around though, for fun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Mark : I would love to see the Poser file you used though, just to see how the heck you did that. Most of what I did was take a human face and shape it more feline than human. Then I'd import it into Paint Pro and add the fur, paterns and such not. Regardless of win/lose, I'll most likely finish off the shipset, just for the practice alone. Thanks for the compliments. Val check your private Messages, my poser file is ready for your perusal

Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Mark: Thanks! I've been trying to learn how to use the magnets, but largely unsuccessful.

Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
yeah magnets are something you just have to play around with until it looks right (or you get bored)

Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Mark -
Thanks for sending me the poser model. It helped, but those magnets drive me NUTS! How do you append multiple files - Lion head and human body? Geo - Saw that you would like to see a second sample ship. Prefer to see a Battle Station, Carrier, Troop, Transport? [ 14 January 2002: Message edited by: Val ]
|
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Your pick. I like your battle cruiser a lot.

[ 20 December 2001: Message edited by: suicide_junkie ]

This is a little OT, but a good place to point this out. The beauty of sci-fi is that the elements of a ship can have whatever function you want. If it doesn't make sense, you make something up. They do this in all kinds of sci-fi, but I think Star Trek is the worst culprit: the Enterprise will be surrounded by about six hundred borg ships with all its shields gone. Instead of throwing up his hands and saying "well, we're screwed" Picard will ask Geordi for advice, and Geordi will save the day by making up entirely new scientific facts, something along the lines of "Well, if we reroute a depolarized tachyon field through the subspace isometric plasma conduits, it might just completely paralyze the whole Borg hive mind." And then Picard says "make it so". Now don't get me wrong; I eat that stuff up. But my point is that the writers of Star Trek don't know a real tachyon particle from a hole in the ground, and as long as it soundssophisticated and futuristic it might as well be real. When the whole universe is imaginary you can make up things as you please http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

Memory permitting, you now have two models loaded at once. All I did then is made certain body parts transparant (in object menu / properties), and positioned the models. |

I'll play around with it later tonight. Thanks!

Don't want you to think I forgot http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Here is a cross sample of ships. The transports are bland and slow looking, didn't think a feline race would consider transports too important, just necessary. Gave the fighter a feline style cockpit, to strike fear into the heart (or whatever passes for a heart) of their enemies. Carrier has a fighter bay and landing strip down the top center. Space stations have their docks on the underside. I also have a Troop that is a mecha cat, a simple mine and satellite, and a drone (though I can't find where I saved the images, I will look for them tonight). Hope y'all enjoy! |
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
I think these all look really good!

Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Thanks!
I'm redoing the Battleship, think the back end should be bulkier looking. |

Well, it looks like we have a winner. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
So Val, this is an official submission or were you just using this thread for discussion? If you are officially submitting it I will declare it the winner and buy it from you for the stated prize of ten U.S. dollars. Or are we splitting the prize between you and Mark since he made the race pic, or did he give that to you? Geoschmo |
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
I do still have to finish the shipset, just wanted to see if you liked/wanted it or not, otherwise I would use it for something else.
Send Mark 1/2 and give my half to any charity you want (including the can't wait for SE V fund) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif I was in it for the challenge http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I'll try to finish it this weekend for you, are there any ships you want redone/had visualized differently? |
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
My only suggestion would be on the battlestation pic. The turrets appear to me to be a little large considering the scale of the station picture. I am thinking with that size of a vessel I would have to be fairly far away to get it all in the viewscreen, and the turrets would appear smaller, or not be visable at all from that distance. Visible weaponry isn't really neccesary IMHO.
The rest of the set is great. I can't wait to start using them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif A 5 dollar donation will be made to the PBW fund in your name. Mark, what about your half? Geoschmo |
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Oh, and by the way, it's not neccessary to make the full neo-standard compliant set as I had orignally requested. Just the stock set will be fine. Except I already have a main pic, so I don't need that.

Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
I'll knock the turrets off and repost with the other missing ships.
When I get a bit more time I'll work on fleshing it out for the neo-standard set, though I would ask Mark to do the infantry pic! |
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Removed the turrets, added some more ships, mines, shields, explosion.
Still working on Dreadnought, Heavy Carrier, Small Transport, Starbase and Large Fighter. Need to do top down of Cruiser and Drone. |

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif My neoshipset builder gives a pretty cool overview of the shipset's progress.
Screenshot.gif I note you are also lacking one image for all three weapon platforms. If you have actually made them, you spelled the name wrong http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |

Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
Sorry, been away. Hopefully you put my half in a high-interest account while I was gone and it is now worth about $40,000.
I suggest since I am in England and I don't want to ruin your country's economy with a large cash drain, that you use the money to open a hospital ward in my name instead. |
Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
So, um, SJ...are ya ever going to release that nice Neoshipset builder viewer for public consumption? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Artists, Shipset designers, and other creative types, please read.
I posted it into the neoshipset mod thread.
Neobuilder.exe There are still some tweaks to be made as to the minimum requirements that the program demands. I'm going to upload the more forgiving Version tonight that no longer demands "bigexplosion" or "shields" or even "main" to be present. Instead, there will be a warning displayed, to the effect that the shipset is still incomplete. As well, infantry should default directly to the race image, rather than trying to use troop images first. I've already made these changes, but I don't think I've uploaded yet. You rock! Thanks! I can't access shipsets here at work, but I'll have to try it out tonight. Keep up the great work!
