Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
You forgot a major issue: The user interface!
Even though the manual says that pressing <enter> is the same as clicking the OK button and pressing <escape> is the same as clicking the Cancel button, it ain't so. Shouldn't this be implemented? Many dialogues would be much easier if you could just hit enter or escape at the right places. Others have pointed out the lack of wheel mouse support. The cargo transfer and unit launch windows do NOT filter out ships which are lacking cargo space/unit launch ability. If you've ever wanted to transfer cargo or launch units from just a few ships in a large group you know how maddening this is. In simultaneous move mode you have to load a ship with exactly the number of units you want it to launch at a given location. You cannot tell it 'drop X number of satellites here, then drop X numbr of satellites there'. Same for cargo, you cannot tell a ship to load or drop X amount of a given cargo. It loads or drops all it can hold every time. Why can't we tell a ship how much of a cargo to load or drop? The Jettison Cargo screen still forces you to dump ALL of a given cargo type. When will it be flexible like the transfer cargo window? [ May 14, 2002, 04:47 PM: Message edited by: Baron Munchausen ] |

Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
Hey thanks everybody for your responses so far... I won't close up the voting for a few days yet, just incase people don't check this BBS like everyday.
And Lurkers, put in a vote, we know you play the game, and you have an opinion http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif Just zip to the first post for the code-key as to what's what. To Gaurav, Bman, Tesco & others. Yeah, those are great ideas, I just didn't see them in the thread I reference. Cheers all y'all |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
And here are the results of the Dutch Empire Jury:
5, 12b, 12c, 25, 33: all 1 point. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
and the results from London are as follows
7, 12(b), 16, 23 , 25, Norway nil points |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
I'm for:
7 12 13 22 23 Any word on which numbers are leading as of yet? Excellent work BTW!!! |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
I've got the numbers up to date, and some ideas are faring quite well, while other ideas are lagging behind... which is a good thing, if we ever want to decide which ones to persue!
I won't give you the numbers yet, I don't want to bias any voting (well actually I do, I want everyone to vote like I did http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ). I'll enter the final tally on Friday morning before I take off for the long weekend. Does anyone know why we (Canadians) celebrate Victoria Day, when not even the British do? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
We as canadians need a getawayfromitall-day and Her majesty the Queen was the perfect reason.

I vote for 28 20 12 4 and 13. Has any one noticed that battles tend to be one sided?

Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
Interesting comparing votes here to contributions by the same person in the other threads. I expect that half of the items will recive half of the votes. The other half will look like a bell curve.
My Vote is based on a priorty of an easier user interface: 5 for #29 Wheel Mouse Thanks for the thread Jimbob Quote:

Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
Gryphn, I'm not sure I understand, are you Derek too? I assumed that everyone would be voting from just one of their aliases.
Edit: Oh, and I'll give the intermediate tally tomorrow afternoon, and maybe make the final tally after this long weekend (Canadians only http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif ) [ May 17, 2002, 05:24: Message edited by: jimbob ] |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
Alright, the pre-weekend tally [drum-roll] ... [/drum-roll]
There were a total of 162 votes as of Friday, 11:59 pm (my clock on the wall time). Hmmm, that's not divisible by 5, because Crazy Dog & Atrocities are still entitled to 2 more and 1 more vote respectively. Send 'em in, and I'll tack 'em on http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif The Modding community is strong with this bulletin board, nearly 30% of all votes were cast in the Modding Category. The 5 strongest topics, as determined by raw # of votes are as follows... #12, with 23 votes - Satelite Positioning #29, with 16 votes - Mouse Wheel #7+8, with 13 votes - More Damage Categories + Damage By Family Type #1, with 12 votes - Intel/Research Generating Components #22, with 10 votes - er.. I can't remember, back in a second with an edit.. oh yeah, System Randomizer Furthermore there was a 3 way tie for 6th place, with 8 votes each were items #14, 16, 23 . Disappointingly #30, Killer Attack Squirrels have faired quite poorly in this poll. They've been quoted as saying "Awww, nuts!" when asked about the poll. One leader in the squirrel community mentioned that they were initially encouraged by signs that rodents would be accepted in the Shrapnel Gaming community, when Suicide Junkie introduced the racial type "Pack Rat" in his acclaimed mod, P&N. "We were encouraged by the apparent recognition of our [minority] presence on the gaming site when it [pack rat] was included in the mod. The lack of votes for more Killer Attack Squirrels can only be seen as a rejection of our type here" he/she is quoted as saying. The Squirrel gaming subculture is expected to burrow their way into another gaming community, perhaps one less biased against rodents. I'll give you another update on Tuesday. Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
Jimbob, and folks,
Um, I only have one "Handle" or variations of it here. I meant to say that it seems most of the people who wanted the "Wheel Mouse" weighted it very heavily. I generalize, but it seems that people who did not vote for Wheel Mouse, spread their votes more. This could be a biased perception. Looks like my expectations of the distribution of votes for was incorrect. I hope I play better in the Galactice Bash than I predict people. I appolize for any confusion. Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
2 votes for #23: Add more Warp Point types
#13: Introduce anger modifiers for the use of certain components or facilities #8: Introduce “Damage Only” by family number(s) #11: Combat Movement bonuses (make into seperate ability from normal movement, please) One-way warp points would be neat. New quadrant topologies possible. Imagine your worst enemy finding (or making!) a one-way warp point to your homeworld and launching their attack fleet. Of course, the attacker can't return home...so he better win or supply could become a problem. Maybe warp points should be cloakable? That way, some or all can be hidden from view until appropriate sensor tech has been researched, making exploration w/scanners more interesting. Maybe the various properties of warp points could be turned into abilities so that one could design warp points using components (sector - warp gate, maybe Component Destroyed On Use)? [ And so you could build your own warp point back to avenge the ashes of the <sob> Homeworld after that dastardly sneak attack. Yes, I was a Stars! player who liked building stargates. AR was cool given time, too. Season to taste. :-) ] -Chuck |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
Yea I know that idea was not in your list. But I think you should add it. You already have 3 votes for it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
True, there are a few great ideas that have been added only after the fact (that were not in the original post that I was summarizing). I guess I could tag 'em on in the "Aaron, here are some other suggestions" Category.
Hey, I was going to tally up the votes on... Last Monday. I could leave the thread open, or I could finalize it. What do you think, should I close it and forward these suggestions to Aaron/MM? |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
tally them and post the results here. I vote that you keep it open for another two weeks. then finalize them, and proitize them ( wow bad spelling then post the proitized list...let us iron those out ( say 2 week deadline ) and send that on Say June 1st to MM

Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
Thought i'd add my own voting (i dont remember voting before)
My first vote goes to the greatest idea: 14.Introduce race specific anger modifiers (i.e. blood feuds) Second vote: 13.Introduce anger modifiers for the use of certain components or facilities Third vote: 8.Introduce “Damage Only” by family number(s) Fourth vote: 3.Jammers working to block viewing ship in tactical combat as well (< great idea) And Last, fifth vote: 1.Components that do research/intel functions Though the Last one should have ship-only or base-only limitation so it wont be abused. |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)

Okay, no time to tally the votes before I go home today, so I'll do 'em tomorrow. Lucky for those who would like to vote, unlucky for the rest of us. |
Re: SE:IV Platinum Edition (voting topic)
Well, here's the final tally on the votes! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
[Richard: I'm hoping that you can help me with forwarding this to MM/Aaron. This message probably won't suffice, it's rather sparce on details. If you can help me, I'd rather write up details on the top 15 choices, and then email it to you. Thanks] General Statistics: -total votes cast 205 -top 5 choices received 43% of votes -top 10 choices received 67% of votes -distribution is standard bell curve, slightly wide std. dev. The Winners: Top 15 choices in descending order of popularity: #12 a-c, spread out/orbit satellites around planets, 13% of votes #29, mouse wheel support, 9% #1, components with research and intel functions, 7.5% #7&8, more “damage only” categories, 7.5% #22, add “system randomizer” to editor, 6% #23, add more warp point types, 5.5% #4, give drones “move to” in orders menu, 5% #14 , introduce race specific anger modifiers (a.k.a. the blood feuds modifier), 5% #16, , teach AI to utilize captured populations (utilizing atmospheres) 4.5% #26, auto-resupply by en routeships running low on supplies, 4% #6, option to not require star for some types of constructed planets, 3.5% #17, improve AI combat tactics… esp. “just out of range” and “in & out of range”, 3.5% #13, introduce anger modifiers for the use of certain components or facilities, 2.5% #15, give “declare war” teeth. If human or AI agrees, enforce the war footing, 2.5% #24, racial points used to buy starting technologies, 2.5% The mouse wheel was the only anomalous topic, with 9% of the votes, but only 5 individuals voting for it. For the most part these voters (more accurately ‘devotees’) cast all their votes for #29. I think that I should have limited the number of votes per topic to 3 per person to even this out, but too late now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif [ June 06, 2002, 20:32: Message edited by: jimbob ] |
