Civ 3 fun to play?

Your sence of fun is not what I would call mine. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Well I will give the game this, it does have long term, IE 24 hour addictive play, the fact that the AI can take out 16 tanks with 5 musketmen just ruined the game for me.

Granted there are mods like the power bar and such that help the game emensly, they are poorly supported now, and many do not work since the latest patch.

The game had good AI Political settings. Good looking graphics, but the uneveness of the units just was one major thing I could not overcome. The editor helped though. But that was very time consuming.

Atrocities, can I ask you why you have such a hard on for Civ III?? I read your post about you playing and the negative feedback about the uneven play. But, hey, that was a year ago. Have you played it lately, with the latest patch?

Still play MOO2 on occasion. And Civ3 but not very much. Civ2 more and even CivNet and Civ1 wich is the one game that made me buy a PC!
I still think Civ1 (or CivNET) is a very good game and I play it a couple of times every year.
Never played BOTF though, or any other ST game, yet,

(And no, don't feel sorry for me I have a real life too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

Wow, Capnq, you still have the old Civilization board game! That's probably a relatively valuable collectors item by now. I've heard the new Civilization board game (based on the computer game!) is pretty good. The problem is finding enough people to play (one of the great advantages of internet gaming).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">"Relatively" is the key word. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif A quick search on eBay found a copy with a current bid of $51, and a package of Civilization + Advanced Civilization with a current bid of $11.49.

I've been collecting non-computer games (mostly board wargames) since I was 13. I stopped trying to count them sometime after the collection broke 240 titles. I have a list of the titles and publishers for both my computer and non-computer games; the .txt file is 10K.

Capnq, And I thought I went through a long wargame phase! I had about two dozen. AH games mostly. So where did you find room to store all those games? I was forced to eventually throw mine out.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">At the moment, they're in 5 large cardboard boxes, a footlocker, and a couple open stacks in the corner of the bedroom. Most of the games in the stacks used to be in the drawers of a spare dresser.

The game collection doesn't take up nearly as much space as my books. I don't have any roommates, so I can get away with stacks of boxes around the apartment.

I played Stars!, MOO and MOO2 quite a bit. I also played Emperor of the Fading Suns (it's still on my HD but I wil probably have to re-install it for it to work). But my favorite game series is the X-Com series. I am seriously considering re-installing X-Com Apocalypse one of these days.

For those of you like me, wondering should I or shouldn't I, get CivIII: Play the World. Here is a link to check out!

The only real new feature the Civ3 exp pack adds is the multiplayer ability (well, unlocks in the source code, anyways). The other things (New Civs, new Units, etc.) are things that can be modded into the normal game.

Fyron, got CivIII PTW over the weekend. It is really pretty nice. I am an Image not Mod ding person. So for me the new stuff is nice.

Now, I just have to wait for MOO3!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Any One Here Still Play

Well, Civ3 PTW is most certainly not worth $30, esp. when Civ3 cost me $50 (and was very buggy and feature-deprived at the time).

mlmbd December 3rd, 2002 06:41 PM

Re: Any One Here Still Play

Oh, I didn't say it was worth $30. But like you I already spent the money for it. That's all I meant!

Re: Any One Here Still Play

No, I didn't spend any money on the expansion. And I won't. I payed $50 for the game 3 days after it came out, and only got half the game. Now they want to charge me another $30 for the rest of the game? I don't think so.

Re: Any One Here Still Play

It's been my impression for a while now that some games are intentionally stripped down to give them stuff to sell later on.

I realize lots of stuff involves development issues with deadlines that are hard to meet, but sometimes it 'seems' flagrant.

It's something that just now comes to mind, but I wish the game review sites out there added a volume or density field to their Ratings...to answer the question of how much game is really in this game.

Had this been the first Civ game, I personally wouldn't have thought it ridiculous to exclude certain things, but being the third and given than 2 had and has such a wide multiplayer appeal, to leave it out of 3 is scandalous.

Fyron December 3rd, 2002 11:33 PM

Re: Any One Here Still Play

That, and they killed off all of the great things that had been added in the Civ2 expansions. Multiple maps, event scripts, some abilities, etc.

Then you get to the issue of an extremely poorly implemented mod and custom map system. If you want to play with a mod and use a custom map, you have to combine them in the scenario editor. You can't possibly just load up the mod in the game, then start a game with a custom map. That would be too easy.

Say, anyone up for a MP game of Civ2 ToT? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I have played Civ3 Play the World...... The new pieces Medieval Infantry and the Guerilla give the warrior/swordsman some longer use.

Besides the multiplayer, with a built-in internet server list (seems to be via Gamespy), the addition of several leaders/races is nice. It also includes many user-made maps and senarios..... so for $30 or less it seems worth it....

Maybe they'll fixes some of the balance issues someday... still to be determined...

kirbyef, Yeah I like the new pieces, a lot. Definitely an improvement on CIV III! IMHO

Re: Any One Here Still Play

Again, everything but the MP is addable with a mod. Unlocking MP in the code should have been a patch, not a $30 expansion. It is my opinion that they deliberately cut it from the initial release so that they would have something to sell later on. Greedy bastards.

Re: Any One Here Still Play

These are good reasons why they can put off MOO3 as long as possible and make sure they put in EVERYTHING in it and squeeze all the bugs out.

mlmbd December 6th, 2002 03:14 AM

Re: Any One Here Still Play

Wizarc, yeah! I much rather wait for one $50 program, that is for the most part bug free. Than to buy 3 $20 programs that are crap!
