Ok, time for an update.

I called the ISP yesterday within 30 minutes of it going down. Got the usual answers on the phone. Got a call back a few hours later saying they couldn't find the problem remotly and would be sending a tech out on Friday.

I was not ammused.

I fully expect that the problem will be with the telco and not the ISP, but I have to play that game and cannot call the telco directly. For the purposes of my DSL the telco doesn't work for me, they work for the ISP.

We've been down this road before and the ISP tech coming out Friday means the telco doesn't get involved till middle of next week at best. So I wrote a stern email to the ISP support detailing the disatisfaction I have had over the Last several months with the service. I told them that if their objective was to drive me away as a customer towards their many competitors in teh highspeed market, they were doing an excellent job. (in those words exactly.) I also told them that I would not be happy unless they got a tech out to my home by today. (wrote this yesterday remember)

Well, lo and behold, it worked. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif The tech just left my house and is heading to the central office as I write this. Assuming she doesn't find a problem there she will get the phone company involved at that point. Not sure how much of a fire I can light under them, but at least we saved 3 days of the process. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

and as for the pay/donate thing:
I am quite willing to pay $1 a month, however I am unable to. being in New Zealand I can have a paypal acc, but I have no way of putting anything in it unless I have a credit card, (which I dont have, and dont know if I can even get, considering that I havent held a full time job for more than a year.
ermm not as bad as that could sound...)

That just means that you only run one server, not a server farm. It is just a difference of scale.

Comparing any game to a MMORPG is a mistake because they are built around an entirely different marketing base. MMORPG, pay as you play. Other games, buy it once (or thrice in the case of certain disreputable companies *cough* civ3 *cough*). It is better to compare to the large majority of games/companies that provide MP servers without charging for them.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Except that most of these companies -don't- provide servers, they provide matchmaking services. IIRC even Blizzard's Battle.net is like this except for the Realms games for Diablo 2. This reduces the strain quite a lot..

And the comparison is relevent because someone else was refering to the pay by the month scheme..

Fix up the TCP/IP mode and provide a match-makign service. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif In addition to the PBW-like functionality. I am sure that Shrapnel would be able to afford it for SE5... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Geo's provider has gained my special award of worst ISP I've run into. I understand the reasons that make Geo stay with that ISP, but I also understand how they can make good commercial offer if they are so cheap on service quality.

So what's the latest update, Geo? Is this going to be another 30 day hiatus, or what?

Re: PBW server is back up.

The Gamer's Woe
by Johan Baumeister (aka farstryder)
(to be read in the style of Seuss)

Once upon a gloomy time,
A saddened gamer made a rhyme.
It was a story of his woes,
And this is how that sad rhyme goes:

When he awoke, his very first thought,
Was not of food, nor tea, piping hot.
It was of his most dear pastime,
That game of games, SE4 so sublime.

But alas! Woe was he,
PBW down? How could it be?!?
Crushed and gloomy, he turned to his rack,
Tried to have fun, but the gloom wouldn't crack.

So he sat down and cried,
And cried, 'cause he'd tried,
To have fun, but could not.
When who should appear, but Xintis, the bot!

The gloomy gamer barely perked up,
But Xintis told him, "Stop crying, sit up!
I've got a solution, one you must hear:
Call all your friends, both far and near!"

"We'll drum up a crowd of fans large and small,
Too many to know how to deal with them all.
Then start up a game via TCP."
"My router is broken, it won't work, you'll see!"

Said the boy to the bot, sad as could be.
The bot pondered that, said, "Watch some TV!"
With much distress and indignation,
With feelings of dread, and suffocation,

The gamer went over where the gleaming bot stood.
Dressed only in PJ's, a shirt with a hood,
The gamer-boy grumpily sat himself down.
While Xintis whistled happily, much like a clown.

He turned on the TV, changed the channel,
From Home Improvement, with Al and his flannel,
To Video 1, with its screen full of snow.
And shortly said, "Get ready for the show."

The boy had forgotten he owned Star Wars,
And Lord of the Rings, with elves and dwarves.
These magical, fantasy stories kept his mind free,
While valiant Geoschmo battled the evil ISP.

THE END

Pretty cool! I think you get an extra 10% for that though.
