Re: PBW status

I have had to take the server down today. The remnants of Ike are passing through our area today and the power has been going in and out. I should be able to bring it back up in a couple hours, assuming we don't lose power completely.

It's back now. Geo thinks this last crash may be related to the problems the electric company is having with restoring the power grid after the storm went through.

I've had to take the server down tonight. Having a bit of a temperature issue. I don't think it's a serious problem, it looks like we've just got a fan that has failed. Unfortunately though it may be a couple days before I can get to the store and get a new one.

Bear with me. Sorry for the inconvenience.

"ISP issues" huh? (http://pbw.georgeperley.com)

What happened? Run over your bandwidth limit due to too many SE5 games? ;) Or do they think you are distributing pirated copies of Space Empires games or something? :P

Re: PBW status

No, it wasn't anything TOS related. It just wouldn't stay up. I could get a couple minutes by resetting the modem, but that was about it. Tech support was telling me my line was good and it must be the modem. Turned out, for once, they were right. :)

Just posted this on the PBW news:

"If you haven't noticed, we had some down time over the weekend related to what we though was an ISP problem. Turned out the issue was our DSL modem was flaking out. Good news is we were able to get one locally and we are back up and running smoothly. Bad news is it took a little bit of cash, about $70 dollars. If anyone feels motivated to send a couple bucks to help offset that, donations as always are welcome.

Thanks again for your support."

No, it just crashed while Geo was at work. It's back up as I type this.

Anyone know what's up with PBW this morning? I'm getting turn notification emails (last one came less than an hour ago), but the site comes up completely blank in my browser... :(

Dunno what the problem was this morning, but PBW was up again when I checked a few minutes ago.

We've had some sort of disk failure on the server. The drive which has all the game versions and most of the site data was throwing errors and when I rebooted windows did a disk check and it looks like we lost a large part of the data on that drive. I'm trying to figure out if I can recover it. We are looking at a few days down time I'm guessing at best.

:O Is there backups?

Unfortunately our backup strategy wasn't exactly very well thought out. We are working on a plan to try and recover the data. I hope to have some news in a few days.

Are there problems beyond the loss of game information? Is there hardware that needs to be replaced?

We don't know yet whether the harddrive itself is still usable.

The current situation is that the failed HD is here in Pittsburgh, where a friend of mine who is an IT professional is going to look at what files are salvagable. I haven't seen her yet to give her the drive, and I don't know how long the recovery process will take.

If she's anything like the hardware guys I know, once she gets it, it won't take long to form an opinion. The reason I asked was because I'd like to make a small donation toward the repair, replacement, etc.

Re: PBW status

I don't think I'd trust the drive in any case. Once a hard drive starts flaking out, I don't really like to use it unless it's just for unimportant stuff. If it's recoverable, the hardware isn't that expensive to replace.

I just returned to the fold after a multi-year hiatus. Has PBW been moved? How are people playing by web these days?

Just found it: http://sepbw.nightscapecreations.com/home.cfm

Thanks,

Anyone know what's going on with SE.net, PBW, or the SE Wiki? All have been down for a few days now.

Any word on PBW or SE.net? Both seem to be down again for several days now.
