We should not assume the worst until more info is known. Then again this could be just a prank to see what we will do. I for one think it best to let the subject die.

No one said he was smart, just he/she/it was a pirate.

I got an email like that once and I sent back a reply with a CC to thier ISP and mail provider.

This would turn you from the self righteous person you feel yourself to be into one of those complete a-holes that spread viruses. You would then be no better than a pirate and perhaps just a wee bit worse. Need I remind you that knowingly spreading viruses is illegal and in many states and countries can land you in prison.

Think about it, how do you catch a criminal, by hunting them down, or tricking them into coming to you. If this guy is a pirate, and I am not saying he is, although he does seem to fit the bill here, then I would rather have as much info about him as I can get than non at all. That way I can use the info against him. So yes, I hope he thinks I am naive as well.

If he is not a pirate, then I hope he can someday afford to "buy" a copy of the game.

UPDATE:

This is an email I received from David D. today. I sincerely hope that this shows you all that to suspect the worst is not always the case.

Thank you for your help and advice it is appreciated. If you were to come
across acopy i certainly would not expect you to do it out of pocket with
nothing in return and i did not mean to seem as if i was undermining the
company for until you gave me the wbsite i had not been able to find it to
buy. Anyway i have much to consider and thank you again.

What are the Europe and UK dealers web addresses? I tried to find them but could not locate any.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">So have you considered that he might be doing the same - he could be an FBI agent trying to root out pirates! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

(Though I could think of better games to ask for... SE4's not exactly one where the gaming community is likely to fall for that... maybe he should have asked for UT2k3 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

You know, I wonder what happens when one undercover cop tries to sell drugs to another undercover cop... what's the cop etiquettte for that situation? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">A cop trying to sell you drugs (or anything else that is illegal) and then arresting you would be commiting entrapment, which is illegal.

First time seeing this thread.

First off do not send this guy a virus, that's illegal and could get you in a LOT of trouble.

If you want send me his info and I'll deal with him, I want to know where he got the email addresses. Unless he has a program that scammed them from the board or such.

Richard I think that goes without saying, but I for one am glad that you said it. I noticed that only a couple of people were civil about this and seemed to not jump to conclusions. I salute you. I also received an email and was kind to respond with instruction on how to order the game. I am certain that this person ment no ill toward Malfador or the game.

We might have just spooked a potential buy away and that is not good. Then again if he was a pirate, a cop, or whatever, at least he did not obtain information on how to get a pirated copy. I hope that NON of you sent him one. This is one of the oldest tricks in the book. If you want to see who is providing pirated copies of your software you mail all those most likely to be guilty and see how takes the bait.
