Emoticons quite clearly help to convey emotion... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

So? The meaning can nearly always be infered from the context. It takes little time to figure out how a person uses smileys that you are chatting with.

yes, but it doesn't have the emotional connections of a tone of voice. it's learned.

I'll go for some good offline time anyday. As somebody who moved to the other side of the world from my family/friends (don't ask me, it seemed like a good idea at the time) I have found I rarely talk to any of my old buddies Online much at all. Of course, every time I go home for a visit it is a great time, but it is just different talking to them Online.

Now my parents on the other hand, I would rather talk to them Online, a question comes up I don't want to answer? I have to step out....

Well if you want tone of voice, use voice chat. Of course typing does not have the same tonal inflections as speech. I never said it did, nor that smileys added that either, just that smileys help to convey emotion. Tone of voice is not the only thing that can convey emotion. Written word can do so fairly reasonably, and smileys can enhance the effect at times.

well, ok then. but i still say somethings a bit lacking with smiley's and text.

but if we're agreeing, what are we arguing about? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Yes, something is lacking. Smileys do not convey the full meaning, just help it along.

We do not agree on the part about chat lacking emotional context. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
