Right now we face several life ending events, the poles might flip, the megnetic field might collaps, the sun might go nova, we could get hit by a comit, the moon could explode, etc.

These are all real possibilities and surely one day one of them will come to pass and we will all be no more.

Depends what you mean by poles might flip. If you mean the magnetic poles flipping, well they posit that may happen relatively soon. They also don't think it'll have much of an impact or any impact at all on life. It's happened many times before.

Magnetic field collapse...I don't think that's too likely to be honest. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

The sun is guaranteed to go nova...but not for another 4 billion years or so...

Hit by a comet, entirely possible. I'd be more worried about an asteroid though.

Moon exploding, no mechanism I know of that would cause that except for a massive impact from an asteroid or similar body.

Honestly, I'd be more worried about a supernova in our stellar neighbourhood, as that'd be guaranteed to wipe out all life. Or a gamma-ray burst nearby that was aimed in precisely the wrong direction, thus also sterilizing the Earth.

Re: OT: If you lead the world, what would you do?

The core is hardening, and the poles magnetic field is also weakening. When it fails, and it will fail, it could signal the start of a pole polarity shift. Best guess has been that the magnetic field of the Earth will "off line" any where from six months to hundres if not thousands of years. So if the poles do flip, and they are on the virge of doing so, then we have a serious problem.

Any one have sun block 10B as in Billion?

I think it might be a good idea to invest a lot more time and money into determining what the effects of a complete or near complete magnetic field break down will be.

Oh by the way, the have proven that some of the rings of Saturan are pure frozen h20. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Its not likely going to be an orderly weakening fade to zero, and then climb back up in the opposite direction.
More likely, you'd see increasingly chaotic strength shifting and local reversals until the reversed regions exceed the normal regions, and take over officially.

Certainly won't be fun for the residents, though.

I think if the magnetic field did collapse, I'd decide to live underground for a while http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

This would make for a great pre-story for sev. The galaxy's magnetic properties shifted thus laying waste to every world in the galaxy. 2400 years after this great catastrophe, many civilizations began to explore the universe, expanding out ward into the unknown, exploiting new resources and extermentating any opposition to create their own Space Empire.

As the title implies, the question is, What would you do if you, and solely you, controlled the direction the world took. What would your policies be, what would you focus a united humanity on?

I would load anyone I didn't like in a transport ship, and then eject cargo.
