Just another brief question. I've heard several people on this board talking about how they got armies around 500 or even 1000 men. How can I get such an army. My biggest armies re around 50, 60 men! Is it all a matter about waiting in a fort with a commander and gathering troops?

On a larger map game you can also gather your army on the way to the war. I wait to gather a huge army of nationals then send them, the war will be over before they get there. So I make troops along the entire path. I make a national leader, some elite troops, some summons, and a few items (pot, bag, sword) for feeding the troops. Then as I travel I pick up elephants here, knights there, some archers, some heavy infantry, some javilineers, even a large batch of slingers.

Or you can play a nation with reanimating priests (Lanka, MA/LA Ermor, LA Ctis through it's national summons, LA Pangea or all ages if you take a nature/death pretender, Mictlan through the Civeteto) and leave them alone for a while reanimating while you do other things - this has the advantage of requiring no gold/upkeep besides the mages in question, and they don't get hungry and chew through all your supply. I believe Mound Fiends can also reanimate, but they are a little more difficult to get in huge amounts before you've already won. I don't have much experience with most of these nations, but MA Ermor's massed Longdead Horsemen can really make a huge difference.

LA Ermor and R'lyeh also get dominion-generated freespawn.

Granted, they're not very GOOD troops sans buffing spells (heh, imagine an army of longdead with Army of Lead and Mass Flight...), but they can be accumulated in huge numbers.

The larger the maps the larger the armies become for you and your enemies and it will take time. The larger maps usually take longer so I recommend playing the larger maps with victory points. Also don't play the water nations because most computer opponents lack the intelligence to organize large armies on attacking water provinces.

Something to remember is that large mundane armies will starve unless you have Nature magic to give them supply items.

It's rarely necessary or efficient to have armies 500+ strong. Using magic you can get the same job done with far less troops.

Just as a follow up on freespawn - they are, in fact, pretty good in areas where you have temples and fortresses. Temples alone will, I believe, upgrade a chunk of your Ermor freespawn to Longdead Horsemen (who are exceptionally useful with a Hold/Attack Rear approach while your crapspawn hold the enemy line in place) and Rl'yeh to Void beasts of various stripes. I'm not sure what Forts do for Rl'yeh, but they upgrade much of your Ermorian freespawn into Roman Legion style warriors (decent armor, tower shields + javelin with either short sword or spear) and in combination with temples give you some sacred undead horsemen.
