Just recruit slave mages near your land beachhead, and when you get one with earth, then hop them out to the surface to a lab where they may put boots on their newly formed feets and start spamming gnome lore.

You'll get Starspawn with Earth 2 occasionally as well.
The hard part is, since they don't have feet, getting Earth 3 for hammers.
