Re: Slight chance of horor mark(O really)

I've used lightless lanterns extensively. Typically I half my research mages get horror marked eventually, and one or two horror attacks per game. Not a bad rate, but enough to make me avoid giving lanterns to anyone special like empowered dudes.

No. I will not under any circumstances undertake to do an official manual addendum because I do not need it for anything myself. I intend to use the time that project would take for other pursuits that are more to my liking.

The Dom3 DB, the bug shortlist, the FAQ and the UOR Mod Manual are enough already. I do not intend to add other Dominions related public projects apart from polishing the sadly neglected Restoration of Ermor mod in the near future.

Good for you, Edi. I enjoyed your Faerun map enormously.

Aezeal, if you think it's important, there's no reason Edi has to be the one to do the job. Poke through the unit database and write it up in a PDF with Lyx or something. Me, I don't really care enough to do the job either. I rely on the in-game info for unit stats.

In unpatched dom3 I remember using Lightless Lanterns and getting many mages horror marked quite quickly.
Might be that I had bad luck, or maybe the chance changed with patches. (Somehow the bad luck theory sounds more sound to me.)

Edi,
any circumstances ?.. Every man has his price. Do you like Jack Daniels? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

PS I wonder if a case of JD might hasten a Dom4 release with seamless allies, AI diplomacy and unit recognition/reward/cut-scenes for statistically anomalous battle prowess? Of course shipment after coding...

Re: Slight chance of horor mark(O really)

As far as Jack Daniels goes, I don't drink whisky or bourbon except on very rare occasions and I'm not too much into alcohol anyway.

I appreciate the joke and take it in the spirit it was made, but see the part below, which is intended for general consumption:

If you need clarification, any circumstances that would give rise to an official manual addendum, because Shrapnel already has other people who have done the manual and are better specialists in it. Digging up all the stuff even with the errata thread would be a massive pain in the arse and I'm not getting paid for anything I've done so far. I do not have a personal need for the manual addendum and I hardly need the manual itself except for the turn resolution order and a couple of the formula pages. Can't have opened it more than two or three dozen times all told.

Because I do not have any personal interest in producing the addendum, the condition that I would do so immediately jumps to the realm of large amounts of cold, hard cash. More cash in fact than Shrapnel would need to pay someone else to do it professionally on a commission, because the time taken to do it would come out of the free time I have, thus out of the time I could spend with my GF or doing other things. That already triples what I would ask for a commissioned work I'd do full time.

I really mean all of that in all seriousness. DO NOT badger me about it. Any of you. It will turn very unpleasant very quickly if you do. I've done enough for this community first unasked, then voluntarily when I was offered the opportunity to manage the bug list, that at this point any more requests to do more, such as have been made in this thread, start sounding suspiciously like demands.

Obviously it depends on the manner in which the request is made, but one reason why I categorically stated that I will not do this was to put paid to any such considerations before they arose. At this point, I will keep doing the projects I have been doing for the community, because I also have a personal interest in those. Anything new I do is either on my own or as a special favor to a select few people and that list basically boils down to:
  • Illwinter
  • Shrapnel Games, depending on the issue
  • The Beta Group, who will probably ask in the beta forum anyway
  • Some others who I have talked with about either my own projects or theirs and whom I know well
  • People who have made substantial contributions to the DB (listed in the credits and usually covered by one of the above as well)

Edi,

As an aside, I wonder how many people on the forums have picked up the (erroneous) impression that you, Gandalf Parker, Johan Osterman, et al. are Illwinter employees? (At least in Johan's case there's some basis in that he's KO's brother and has helped shape Dominions mythology.) I can't think of any other reason they'd be offering to bribe you with whiskey in the same breath as offering to bribe Illwinter for a Dom4.

Re: Slight chance of horor mark(O really)

The Robe of the Mage is not an automatic horror mark by any means. In my last
game, I had both a Seraph and a Pretender use it for at least ten turns, probably
more like twenty. Neither got marked. On the other hand, my Horror Magnet, with
Mage Bane and the Forbidden Light, was fighting horrors every turn. I was using
him as a SC by the end, and I still kept the script for killing the Maker of
Ruins, instead of something more suited for fighting 20 casters and 150 troops.

Well I am an occasional employee of illwinter. As in I have previously mooched some money of illwinter, and has written and done some minor design work for various dom iterations. I wrote the non brief global enchantments messages for example, the brief one where added by JK when he realised I wasn't going to finish writing for the rest of the spells, and I wrote and invented items and descriptions, like Percival the pocket Knight, the Oath rod of Kurgi and another hundred or so. I've done some other minor stuff as well, but mostly I just hum and heehaw when Kristoffer shows off some new sprite he has drawn, and try to make suggestions for additional units or abilities to new nations etc.
