It requires very thorough placement to use them efficiently and not gather empty turtle shells after battle.

Hey, no disrespectin', empty turtle shells are some of the most powerful weapons known to mankind.

I don't mind but it's better to go and gather turtles at the beach than to have precious Kappas killed for them http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.
If you were Arco leader, would you allow killing your war elephants to get their precious tusks?)

Lisa, a guy who's got lots of ivory is less likely to hurt Stampy than a guy whose ivory supplies are low.

shameless self bump for update. It's been awhile since I've actually played, but have been meaning to get this out there.

Hmm.

I don't know if this was mentioned much OW: fairly viable is to go resource -3 and use a lot of kappas. Kitsunes with relief?

sounds like trying to start an underpowered car out in 4th gear.

That's a creative idea, but it won't perform as a strategy backbone: it takes too long to get Relief, takes too long to get Kitsunes, and Shinuyama has no native N income.

Kappas make an effective starting expansion force,
you don't need relief until they are massed.
And the 120 design points are useful.

Also, dai-bakemono are really too good to not use. You can easily be generating an expansion force of them every turn by the middle of year 1. (With Production3 of course - i know, not generally a popular choice, but you don't actually need your pretender to do much).
