If you get a poor starting position expand quickly - build up a rapid attack force and go at the enemy as quick as possible - you may not win but you will probably affect the balance of power depending on who you attack first.

The Birthing Season

Before the Grand Lord could address his subjects he insisted on wearing his new clothes..

"Order!, Order in the council chambers."
"Good people, as you know the Birthing Season is upon us once again. However, this season if we do not expand our Colony we will soon perish as a species."

a wave of murmering and whispers spreads across the council chambers as people digest this sad but true fact.

"But fear not, our good colony minister 'Mr. Columbus' has a bold plan to expand our colony to nearby planets and even neighbouring star systems." The gathered crowd takes in a sharp gasp at this announcement.

"I know the idea of leaving your home world is a frightening one, but it is a necessary evil that we must embrace if we are to survive. I now put forth a call for vollenteers to brave the new frontiers that we shall discover. So any who would like the Honor and Gratitude of your fellow citizens please report to the Colony Minister for your new off-world assignments."

Surprisingly the vast majority of people raise their hands in excitement. Eager to become pioneers in this bold new era. The grand Lord was sure this overwhelming interest was due to his wearing his new clothes.

Let the games begin again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

On Homeworld
Dokeo strode into the Chamber. Seated in a crescent moon around the front sat a number of Elderly Guardians, and although they were of great age an observer could not fail to notice that they were all of a healthy mind. If a council member were deemed unable to handle the responsibility, they would have been retired to easier tasks without any lack of respect. Comment rang across the chamber as they debated the information conveyed to them. This was not the entire council, only the Elders handling the normal daily routine. Were it needed the entire council could be convened in a much larger room nearby. Waiting patiently Dokeo watched as councillor Broma finished his report. Broma was only slightly older then Dokeo himself, and was presently responsible for food production. Dokeo did not consider Broma’s position any worse than his, for in truth all service to the State was of equal value and in the future Broma may well be given responsibility that some may have considered more important than Dokeo’s duties. A junior scribe, a young member of the Guardians, sat off to one side notating and learning the process of government.
“So in conclusion I can report that food production has exceeded requirements and a healthy reserve is available” finished Broma, bowing to the Elders. The report was hardly any surprise, the technology of the State was easily capable of handling the citizens nutritional requirements.
“The State thanks you, councillor Broma, for your service” spoke the daily head of the council”
“I live only to serve the State” replied Broma
Broma turned and strode past Dokeo, smiling at the young councillor as he left.
Dokeo moved up until he stood at the center of the half circle.
“What have you to report, councillor Dokeo?” asked Geros, the eldest member of the Daily council and its leader.
“If it pleases the council, I can report that we are prepared to initiate exploration of nearby systems”
“That is good. As the program has been agreed on at the Last council meeting, permission has been granted to begin as soon as possible” dictated Geros.
“And what of the possibility of alien life? ” queried one of the councilwomen, Gigia, one of the leading members of the Elders
“I am not sure if I understand your question, Grandmother” replied Dokeo.
“What is to be done if we meet other races in space” elaborated the councilwoman.
“The problem has been debated in committee, sister” informed Geros.
“I wish for the answer to be on record” replied Gigia.
“Then for the record, please continue Dokeo”.
“As the council wishes” responded Dokeo ”Our technology should surely make it possible to communicate with them and we can convey our concerns at their intruding in what will be ours”.
“And if they do not heed our warnings?. We have no way of knowing if the Aliens will respect our demands. After all they will hardly be looking out for the good of the State as we do”.
“Then we shall have no choice but to pass on responsibility to the Auxiliaries” finished Dokeo. Of course no Auxiliaries were present at a council meeting, but the Guardians would not hesitate to pass responsibility to the military if the State was threatened.
“I am sure that we all agree that no means is to much to guarantee the States security” Put forward Logos, one of the more militant members of the council. It was generally thought the gods had placed a bit too much silver in the mans soul.
“Of course” echoed the general response.
“As we all here agree, and the question is on record, I thank councillor Dokeo for his service” finished Geros
“I live to serve” replied Dokeo as he bowed.
Accepting the Elders permission to depart, Dokeo turned and left the Chamber.

The three supreme rulers Alvin, Simon and Theodore sat in their communal throne room chatting lively about recent events in their empire.
"So, when is this new ship due?" said Alvin.
"Definitely by the next almond harvesting season" replies Theodore, after looking through some of the scattered papers on his desk.
Suddenly, a servant runs in. He claims to have an urgent message from the "almighty God" and our "dear host". With him, he has a small wooden box with intricate carvings. There is a small red wax seal that bears the picture of a dragon. This seal covers the miniscule gap left in between the lid and the rest of the box.
Alvin says in his typical goofy voice "Well, read it!".
"Dear Alvin, Simon and Theodore" starts the servant. "We are sorry to inform you that some of the competing empires have failed to develop any significant traits, and are just average..."
Alvin interrupts, yelling in celebration, while Simon and Theordore both look at each other with evil grins on their faces.
The servant continues reading the message: "It is with great regret that we ask for your help to level the playing field, and give this empire some sense of uniqueness."
While the servant reads on, Alvin grabs the wodden box and opens it. Inside, there is a metal cube with a big red button on it. There is an engraving on the side which is illegible.
".. and so, because of the reasons outlined in this message ... " continues the servant.
Alvin's sense of curiosity gets the best of him, and he pushes the button.

Several Geological Eras later...

"My Lord, one of our rural colonies has reported an alien ship has entered their sector."

This news both excites and worries the Grand Lord. In his haste to expand the empire he has turned a blind ear to his military advisor and witheld from building his military force.

"We must send an emissary to find out their intent. Perhaps they are a peaceful race and would welcome an allience. But if they are a waring race we need to know as soon as possible so that we can build up our defenses."

The Grand Lord glances over at Jacob and motions for him to approach.

"Jacob, I'm sending you to make first contact. Here is what I want you to tell our visitors,..." The Grand Lord fills Jacob in on his plans and sends him off in his fastest ship. "I trust you are ready for this challenge my dear friend, I hope you return safe."

Re: (N)GC4 - Game Story Thread

The Council hall was abuzz with excitement. One of the states vessels on the border had passed through a wormhole and had been surprised to come across an inhabited world belonging to another race, indeed the first alien race ever discovered. A large map of surrounding space was up on the screen with an area newly coloured in.
“What are they like?” cried one council member
“What do they want?” cried another
“Are they dangerous?” shouted a councillor, probably Logos.
“Order!” ordered the chairman “If we settle down we can discuss the matter properly”.
Slowly the noise subsided and the council took their seats. The entire council available was in session for such a momentous occasion.
Once the throng had quietened High Councillor Dias began to speak
“What information we have is vague. We have intercepted transmissions, not much but enough to get a name and a view of what we have met”
“What are they?” someone called.
“They are called the Spelunkers, and they are lizards” Dias answered.
“Lizards!” exclaimed a councillor at the front.
“Yes, strange as it is they have the appearance of lizards. Much as one might find under a rock in ones garden”
“If I might interject?” voiced a junior councillor, Dokeo.
“Yes, Dokeo”
“We must not lose sight of what they are from their appearance. It would be obvious to assume they view us to be as strange as we view them. This is another race entirely. With, we must assume, as much capacity for violence as ourselves. It could be a fatal mistake to pass them off as a strange looking garden animal”.
murmurs of agreement echoed around the council chamber.
“Your words speak wisdom, councillor” Dias said to Dokeo.
“What else do we know?” questioned a junior councillor.
“Information is scant. Their own database, what of it we picked up, lacks any information on them”
“What of the ship that found them?”
“The Captain, for whose wisdom we chose for the position, has sent them a message asking them to refrain from intruding in our space, in return we have withdrawn our vessel before we cause any alarm to the aliens”.
“I ask again, are they dangerous?” this time it was clearly Logos posing the question.
“With the lack of data we cannot be certain, we shall have to take precautions and see what happens. The Auxiliaries have been informed and are drawing up contingencies”
What followed was an in-depth discussion of the data recovered. At the end the councillors filed off to their offices to plan actions to deal with the new crisis.

Broma stood at attention, wearing Diplomatic uniform. Around him stood the crew of the vessel on which he had been transported here. Mostly comprising Auxiliaries they also wore their dress uniforms, besides him the captain stood waiting along with the other members of the States diplomatic contingent. Slowly the doors leading into the conference room opened and a junior officer ushered in the delegates from the neighbouring empire. Broma made an effort not to react to their alien appearance. Bedecked in their own Versions of uniform, or at least Broma assumed, they filed into the room and stood opposite the desk that filled the center of the room. Broma strode forward, aware of the fact that cameras in the room were filming the events for the records. Reaching to one side he picked up the old fashioned pen lying on the desk, and with a flourish he affixed his newly created signature to the official documents on the desk. Normally documents would be signed with an electronic print, but so little was known of the aliens that old fashioned means were required. Turning the documents he pushed them over to the Alien envoy, accepting in return a copy of the documents newly signed by the Alien. Again the envoys signed the copies before an aide from each side reached over and took the newly signed trade treaties. Reaching across the desk Broma held out his hand. The Alien envoy stared at the presented limb before reaching forward with its own alien limb and grasping Broma's. Broma was surprised how warm the hand felt, and he began to smile.

Re: (N)GC4 - Game Story Thread

First Speaker Roanon was studying the reports on his desk with grief. Explorer reports, explorers sent to scout new worlds for his race to colonize on. But planets to settle on were scarce, despite of the predictions of his astronomers that told otherwise. Not only that the large mineral-rich asteroid fields were missing that his experts had predicted to exist in this galaxy. But there also seemed to be no planets of large size, similar to his homeworld, in the whole galaxy! While, as predicted, small and tiny planets did not have the gravitation to hold the gaseous atmospheres in which his species lived, this left his race with a very slim range of planets to settle on. Huge planets were very scarce, also, and apart from many other things, on top of this, even the latest reports did not find a single huge breathable planet. While The Big Creator seemed to have distributed atmosphere sizes equally among the smaller planets, he not only had left out large planets on creation, but probably also had forgotten to include his atmosphere in the distribution on huge gas planets.
Roanon sighed. Fate had played against his race. Most certainly, they would have no future in this galaxy. Should he order the building of warships and try some suicidal conquests, as some of his ministers already had suggested? No, this really would not solve these problems. This galaxy just had too few planets for his race to live on.
What was this crazy scientist writing? He could build devices for destroying planets and creating them anew? Maybe this was the only way to survive for his race in this galaxy...

I checked Tescos map that is being used in the game:

You have 170 planets that fit your atmosphere and planet type, most medium and some large and some huge.
I haven't counted the asteroid fields but they are counted in hundreds.

If you instead had gone for rock with same atmosphere you'd had 252 breathable planets, some huge, some large. Alot less medium and many more small and tiny.

I'd say you have approximatly the same amount of facility space, you just gotta find them.

It's the same in all maps, there are fewer gas planets than rock and ice but the facility space is roughly equal.

[quote]Originally posted by Ruatha:

I have explored my share of this galaxy, and there are NO large planets apart from the home planets. Numbers do not tell much, there are a lot of planets in this galaxy - 170 is less than one breathable planet per system.
I haven't counted the asteroid fields but they are counted in hundreds.
Sure, but there are hundreds of systems too. FQMs specialty is, though, a ring containing about 10 - 20 asteroids in nearly every system. In NGC3, set up with FQM, there were thousands, not hundreds of asteroids.
If you instead had gone for rock with same atmosphere you'd had 252 breathable planets, some huge, some large. Alot less medium and many more small and tiny.
Yes I know, rock/huge/my atmosphere is extremly rare also... and, again, only homeworlds appear to be large. I have expected to be able to settle on less, but larger planets. Huge planets only without my atmosphere may be bad luck, but removing all large planets from the game alters it a lot for gas races. Probably adding some mediums does not compensate in any way and dramatically changes the overall structure (needed colony ships, number of population and facilities possible).

I'd say you have approximatly the same amount of facility space, you just gotta find them.
I doubt, but I will try to retain hope. Up to now, all aspects of planets have been distributed very evenly, and I have doubted that the lack of huge/my atmosphere will change in other systems. But, a home system with fewer warp lanes than usual, nebula adjacent, and even a directly adjacent black hole, does not promote exploring very much...

It's the same in all maps, there are fewer gas planets than rock and ice but the facility space is roughly equal.
I expected that, and planned for that: fewer but bigger planets. But I did not expect NO large planets at all. Having only medium planets to live on is a bit depressing for a Gas Planet race.

/rant off
... and I even didn't want to rant. Just vent a bit maybe - and explain why I might turn less attention to this game than I could do. No, I didn't hand over the empire to ministers - yet... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Let me conclude this with the statement, that I *do* like the map and the effort Tesco has put into it, but next time a galaxy is created with one planet type missing and Non-Asteroid FQM a hint would be appreciated very much.

Re: (N)GC4 - Game Story Thread

FYI: The Huge Gas Planet situation in my neck of the woods is I have found 6 so far, 3 Carbon Dioxide, 2 Methane and one Oxygen. There are a few large Gas planets too, and I didn't scan for medium, normal, small or tiny.

note I have visited some 14 systems so far, so I would have to agree that Huge Gas planets seem to be scarce. Especially if your atmosphere type is Oxygen and your planet type is Gas, your Home bases will be stretched thinly all accross the galaxy.

just my 2 cents, Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

What I think is strange that I didn't find ANY large planets - neither Gas, nor Rock or Ice. 10 systems scouted so far, not counting black holes and nebulae. That led me to the conclusion they have been left out completely, due to the usually equal distribution metinoned above. You are sure that there are more except homeplanets? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif Well, good that there are at least some. Re: (N)GC4 - Game Story Thread

The Council was going about its business. At the moment it was discussing the latest reports from the border.
“Item one” spoke Dokeo “We have accepted the Manticores’ proposal of trade, but they have occupied a planet in our space.”
“I still can’t believe they’re human” spoke one councillor.
“Human they may appear, but they are not of our race and so should not be accorded any greater leeway than other races we have met” replied Dokeo.
“We must tread gently” spoke up Councillor Dias “Instead of leaping to conclusions of invasion as the Auxiliaries might, we should handle the incursion diplomatically”. Comments of agreement rang out around the chamber, but there were also opposing comments.
“You just have to look at the system to see we have colonised it” cried Logos “Despite warnings or not, the fact that they go ahead and colonise our systems is a threat to our security”
“I propose we vote” said Geros “those willing to voice our concerns to the Manticore?” he asked.
Many of the councillors present indicated their agreement.
“those wanting swift action?”. Again many agreements, but this time fewer.
“Agreed then, We shall warn the Manticore not to continue their incursions”
“Item two” continued Dokeo “ the machine empire on the border. Indications are they claim a system between our worlds”
“Have we any colonies in the system?” queried Geros.
“No, there were plans to occupy the system but they had not yet been carried out”
“I say we allow it, but from the map any further and they will be interrupting our passage to the border” said Dias. A unanimous agreement was indicated.
“Item three. As the previous items indicate we are in a precarious position many other empires are closing in on our borders. We require a coordinated plan to handle security issues” Dokeo said.
“I have a view on this issue” spoke up Logos.
“Yes, councillor”
“I suggest a radical departure from normal organisation. Until this time we have existed in order, with the wisdom of the council, we have run the State. Other races though are a potential threat I suggest we have a member of the Auxiliaries sit in on such meetings as this one, to gain us a viewpoint on defense against the outside powers”
“Preposterous” exclaimed Gigia “To have an auxiliary make state decisions goes against all the State stands for. Next you will want tradesmen saying what is best”
“Relax sister” reassured Logos “ I do not mean for decision making to be placed in the hands of the Auxiliaries. I merely suggest we have a military spokesman to brief us on the situations on the border where there may be a threat”
“hmph” replied Gigia.
“All those who agree?” asked Geros. Indicator lights lit up. “And those against?”.
When the votes had been tallied the proposal passed with a slim majority.
“It is agreed then” declared Dokeo “ As of the next situation meeting we shall have a military viewpoint present. As all points have been covered, are there any further points to be put forward”
no member spoke up. “Then I call this meeting over. For the Good of the State”
“For the Good of the State “ chimed the other members.

The Republic was Strong. No longer was the State new to space. Borders had been expanded, new races met. There had been some difficulties with others, in particular one ally was in need of attention in case tensions should ruin the peace. Although the borders were set, new territories and dangers had become apparent. Some races had set their presence, despite warnings, in the States territory. One other empire in particular seemed willing to take what they wanted despite an uneasy truce and warnings. Time would tell if they would back down or if force was necessary to preserve the security of the State.

OOC questions:

1) Is out of game communicaiton (via personal email, etc...) allowed in this game? (ie: is it a house rule, frowned upon, etc...)?

2) Who is running the 3rd republic right now? I thought it was RAndallW, but now it looks like Tesco

These are interrelated questions, since the time delay has led me to mess up and possible I screwed up relations with the 3rd republic, and I wanted to see if I had the option to deal with it out of game or not...

thnaks,

Alarik

As far as I understand (and followed) the rules, out of game communication is allowed, but not prior to in-game contact.
I don't know about the Republic, doesn't Tesco have too much knowledge about the map?

Hi.
Here's the answers:

All communicateion is allowed by all means after in-game contact.
before no communication regarding the game should be made.

Tesco will run the empire in two weeks while RandallW is on vacation, to keep up the queues and see that it doesn't fall together.
It's something the two of them has agreed upon and as it's such a short time I don't see that it will affect the game too much.
But to be honest, I had forgotten about Tesco made the map..
Do you want to complain or is it ok for 2 weeks?

I'm not gonna stress about Tesco playing them for a few weeks, I was really more concerned about working out some agreements but I was unsure whom to do it with...

thanks,

Alarik
