Re: Time left to play

Ulm is not that far from Ermor. I'm the only thing between them. *Ducks for cover.*

Clarification: I don't really mind all that much and if other people is okay with this then I am too. However, I still believe that it is generally not acceptable for a person to play two different positions in the same game.

Re: Time left to play

If needed, I could provide my services as a temporary replacement. However, I do not have a reliable TCP/IP access to Dominions. Consequently, someone else would have to upload my turns (the game admin perhaps?), but would not have to actually do the turns themselves.

Having a player able to upload her turns on her own would be much better however. Silly me; I confused this game with the other Newbiegame. I will definitively not be able to do TCP/IP in this game, as evidenced when I took over Beorne's Vanheim (I had to highjack another computer in order to do my turns).

Panther,

I canceled one weekend (fishing trip) which would have been this weekend. Whats funny, I half canceled it because I didn't want to stale in any turns in my 5 MP games (which is highly recommended not doing if you wish to do anything else).

But I will be out next weekend camping. September 25th will be the day I won't be able to take a turn.

Dragonfire11 pinch-hitting for the Dawg

We have a bit under a week until the Dawg departs. It looks probable that the issue of collusion will be moot once Ermor is eliminated. In the event Ermor is alive, but on life support, I will leave it to the judgment of the community. It was my intent to get instructions from the Dawg and faithfully abide by those instructions. In no event will I transfer goods between the two nations. Realistically, I don't think Ermor will have much of an impact on this game other than to eliminate itself and pickles as contenders. I hope I am wrong of course, but it looks grim. So even if I am an unfaithful or dishonest steward, I don't think my temporary role could change much. But, again, I will not take the Dawg's helm if people are concerned. I don't want to ruin our respective reputations here. Lastly, for what it is worth, the Dawg and I are fiduciary agents in real life and I’d like to think that I could resist temptations in the virtual life too. Please comment. Thanks.

Well, Dragonfire, now that there is an official thread where you can get in line with other applicants, perhaps, after a lengthy stretch of due process and equal treatment, you will prove to be the best man for the job. We at the ULM DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT EQUITY encourage you to apply. Please take one of those snazzy, short 10-page self-duplicating application forms over there and submit it along with a financial statement and a full disclosure of all actual, putative, constructive and/or contingent conflicts of interest that you have, have had, might have had and/or foresee having in the future. Thank you for your attention to this matter and all other matters to which you give attention.

BS Nuclear and MS electrical. I work at a nuclear weapons research facility, actually. But the nuclear weapons business has been extremely slow since the end of the Cold War. Currently, I have drifted into Program Management for non-proliferation research and engineering efforts, primarily in nuclear radiation detection and characterization.

Very cool! I think you definitely got me beat in the math and science department. I liked science in school, but now I just read National Geo.

Re: Dragonfire11 pinch-hitting for the Dawg

Really! I write boring motions for a living. And you mint nukes. Ok Mr. Smarty Panther: How do you calculate the area of a disk if it is spinning? (I don't know the answer so you could make just about anything up.)

The Panther September 19th, 2004 02:11 AM

Re: Dragonfire11 pinch-hitting for the Dawg

Measure the diameter of the disk. Divide by 2 and square the result. Multiply by PI (~3.14159). And that's all she wrote!

Makes no difference if it is spinning or not other than the difficulty in measuring it. It is actually more interesting if the disc has a hole in the middle like a CD.

So... A standard CD diameter is 12 cm on the outside, and just under 1.5 cm on the inside. The area of a spinning CD is therefore approximately:
(12/2) * (12/2) * PI = 113.1 sq cm
MINUS the hole
(1.5/2) * (1.5/2) * PI = 1.8 sq cm
Equals
111.3 sq cm
Which is the answer to the CD question.

And no, I am not making this up!

DragonFire11 September 19th, 2004 02:20 AM

Spinning Disk

Ah, well it should matter mathematically. If the disk is spinning, the outer edge is moving faster than the inner portion. As a result, the outer edge is heavier and more compressed, and distorting space more. Consequently, the irrational number of pi no longer exists – well it’s no longer useful other than an estimate. I have no standing to engage in a math discussion with you (beyond simple addition) but I think I am right about this.

DragonFire11 September 19th, 2004 02:25 AM

Re: Spinning Disk

I know the Dawg will give me grief about this so I just want to say that the spinning means its not just a classic math problem but a question of relativity - spinning means the disk is no longer flat.

Ah, the classic difference between a scientist and the engineer. The scientist sits around trying to figure exact answers to questions which are meaningless. The engineer simply estimates the correct answer and then goes on to build the disc.

Actually, the effects of the manufacturing tolerances dwarfs (by many orders of magnitude) the nearly infitintesimal area modification caused by the outer stretching in a spinning CD. In fact, the Heisenberg Uncertainity Principle will tell you that the difference is likely not even measurable! Which means is matters not to the engineer, but only the scientist!

Actually putting the game on hold and waiting on Pasha might be a good idea. I think we're at a pretty critical point in the game and a sub might not make the important decisions that Pasha would need to do.

It is fine with me, of course, if you guys want to put the game on hold, but that would seem like a major drag for the remaining players.

Its twelve days which is quite a bit of time, not only to wait to play again but to have someone taking over your nation. I wouldnt like my empire taken over for potentially 15-16 turns, even by someone I liked and trusted. However this is the one multi player game I have going so two weeks hurts quite a lot. Solution: Im going to join another newbie game. So my vote is wait.

Re: Dragonfire11 pinch-hitting for the Dawg

Dragonfire is playing as Melkor on the server. And Ermor's situation has improved from before. I no longer expect to be out of the game within a few turns. So that leaves us with a tough question. If I am not mistaken, we need to decide today. We can pause the game, I can cover, or someone else can cover. Can I make a suggestion? Can we have the game's host decide the matter? This will make the determination quick and final, but we should know in advance whether anyone would be totally unhappy with this proposed solution.

Beorne September 23rd, 2004 02:43 PM

Dawg solution

Ah! Now I understand! Panther & Grim Knight have tought about a good solution to resolve the PashaDawg issue! I think that to 2 or 3 turns I will be free to substitute him for Ulm without any conflicting interests!
Small powers, be aware!
