Heading to Washington University (St.Louis) in August, probably studying Mechanical Engineering.

Love 4x games, Civilization II and its spinoffs, realistic first-person shooters, and the Close Combat series. Been playing SE since Space Empires II.

Also heavily into Warhammer 40,000 (loyal and Chaos Marine armies) and getting back into Epic (Imperials and Orks).

29, New Jersey, Married. Instructional Designer: I write install & user guides and put together training classes for a Payroll software company.

8 year USAF, Gulf War vet (did security and anti-terrorism). Got out, got married, slowed down... but totally rely on gaming for peace of mind. Have 3 core friends who have been enjoying SEIV PBEM since it rolled out.
Also love other (mostly strategy) computer, RPG, and board games, such as Axis and Allies, Risk, Panzer General series, MOO2, Close Combat series, Civilization series...

My beautiful wife is closing in on me with the "kid" thing, so I will be doomed here in the next couple of years. She insists that "I won't have time for all these silly games" when we have children... BUT she does not realize my EVIL plot to teach them SEIV and all the cool games I know ASAP!

30 and still getting acne. Mom said I would stop getting acne when I grew up. Therefore, I have not grown up.

Manage a staff of 110 local and expatriates, which gives me excellent training for SE4. Our organization takes 18, 000 African refugees a year and moves them to the US to start new lives. Living in Nairobi, Kenya is fun, but sometimes depressing. Main advantage of living in Kenya, I have a maid. Main disadvantage is the poor internet connections.

I have a wonderful girlfriend who doesn’t understand 4X; she wants to play Midtown Madness.

First space game was Gorf on the Vic20, later moved on to Empire, then Empire Deluxe, Pirates!, CIV I and MOO. In the Last year or so, Heroes of Might and Magic III has taken a lot of time from my life, then SE4 showed up.

Hey Stonemill

You have the right attitude with your kids...I was teaching mine on board games back in the late seventies/early eighties. Then came along my first computer..an apple IIe with a whooping 64k of memory..no HD. My youngest was still in diapers and learned how to operate that thing on his own...even learned to spell and count using it. Now he just graduated HS and is going to a computer tech school..hehe. My other has his own computer at college and we are constantly doing things Online together. The funny thing is I was divorced 12 years ago...so even though your wife may go (LOL)...your kids are there to stay http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Now that my house is nearly empty, I've been trying to get my 2 german shephards to become computer literate...but they would rather chew on the mouse than work it properly..sheesh..and these ain't even old dogs yet http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Sabre21,

Too funny! That reminds me of my friends' kids who are barely out of diapers but routinely whoop my butt on all the first person shooters (darn kids memorize the mazes), it's remarkable. I guess that's why I stick to strategy.

So it pays off to stick a keyboard in the crib? Thanks for the advice. Is there any way to trade the ballerina outfit for a Star Trek officer's uniform?

Sorry to hear that your marriage did not work, maybe if she came around to gaming... Boy, that would seem to be the perfect marriage!

One Last note- You mean you are not supposed to chew on the mouse?!? http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif

Hi,

Nice to see I'm not the oldest here, for once. <wink> I'm 45, single, but very involved with a wonderful woman. Been playing wargames since I was 12. Bought Jutland and Battle of Brittain at Toys R' Us, of all places as my first wargames. Subscribed to S&T. Issue 22 was my first.

I'm a very out of work freelance writer desperately looking for an assignment. I've been writing about (and sometimes working on) computer games for 20 years. My first PC was an original IBM PC (with cassette port). It cost a depressing amount of money. (570! for 1 single-sided, single density 5.25" floppy drive. It wrote a whopping 160K to each disk.)

I love SE 4, especially tinkering with it. Been playing around a lot with the technology files and having fun.

Ciao,
Sam

Re: OT: How old are you ?

I'm 40, married with 4 kids. I started playing wargames with my dad when we got Avalon Hill's Battle of the Bulge from a second-hand store when I was a kid. I was on the chess team in high school (Geek alert! Geek alert!) and I have been playing all manner of computer games since a friend and I got access to Collosal Cave over 20 years ago. If it's a game, I'll play it (although some of the modern games have pushed the gore level to the point that I won't touch them).

Edit: Oops, forgot about the career part:

I've been attempting to force my will on computers in one fashion or other since 1979. Most of that time has been spent as a programmer/analyst. One of the interesting things about programming is that you have to be an instant "expert" in al kinds of fields that have nothing to do with computers. I've had to learn about home energy consumption, civil engineering, telephone engineering, hospital billing, credit card procesing, shipping line tracking and general accounting. So for those of you that are getting an education in preparation to become programmers, make sure that you have a well rounded background that prepares you for just about anything. You will never know what you are going to be expected to set up systems for.

Sorry. Now, lessee... I'm 28 years old, male, married three years with a three year old son, and live near Greenville, South Carolina. By trade, I am a PC technician/low-level network admin/aspiring webmaster, though currently on the Quest for Gainful Employment (or, I need a job!). I like gaming (naturally!), music, trivia, and being amazed daily by my son.

I started on board games in my youth, and started playing D&D at around age 10. I also played Star Fleet Battles with that same group of players. After playing Pool of Radiance about seven times, my first real computer-strategy addiction was Civilization (when I first got it, I played it for 19 hours straight). Then I progressed through Master of Orion, Civ 2, MOO 2, Baldur's Gate and Pharaoh (with a little Doom and Half-Life thrown in there to exercise my reflexes) before SEIV became my current addiction.

Last book read: either _Fox in Socks_ or _The Cat in the Hat Comes Back_, depending on which order my son wants them read to him (his current addiction, since the beginning of July). And, yes, he will be a gamer too. (He already uses the mouse better than some computer Users I supported!) http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif

Just read through the whole thread-- a wonderful mix of gamers here ("Serious Gamers Only!"). A great mix of age range, nationality, and background.... Maybe I'll learn a thing or two!

Hi All

I'm 44 and live in the US state of Ohio. Married for 14 years, no kids. I work as a business analyst for a Major Multinational Corporation.

Interests: computer gaming, history, sci-fi, electronic music.

My first computer game was the original Sim City. I play strategy games mostly (Civ2, Pharoh, Cutthoats, Sim Sity 3000, Tropico, Alpha Centauri), with an occasional round of something like Mechwarrior 3 when I feel the need to be mindlessly destructive, or Asheron's Call when I want to hack-and-slash in a fantasy setting and 'be' with other people.

Actually, I'm not much of a social type. I'd rather read a book than watch a sporting event, and I stopped nipping down to the local pub some time ago because I just cant stand listening to nearby loudmouths yapping on their cellphones.

thats what I meant too. sorry, i did not mean to insinuate any sort of propensity for, umm, Online intimacy. I usually tend towards dive bars where the yuppies on cellphones are affraid to hang out after dark, and I find that most of my friends are interested in history and experimental music as well.

Those Online people have to hang out somewhere in real life, i guess it just helps that my friends are all geeks. never the less, we all spend far too much time socializing Online. like me, right now.

Science fiction being my favorite genre. I've played starfire, warpwar, alpha centauri, Fifth frontier war, traveller, space 2300, star cruiser and all the recent computer games. I still have my original reach for the stars on 51/4 floppy. I´m 30, getting married next month :-)
I live in Santa Fe, Argentina, and play strategy games since 15.
Great fan of SciFi and motorcycles

I´ve played, Simcity, MOO, MOO2, All Civilizations, Caesar, etc.
SE IV is the best of all... is the first one that moved me to MODding and Play by web/email.

Oh, and I work as an R&D Manager for a small Computer Factory. I used to get sample products enough to make Monster PCs on wich to play Unreal, etc. But now i just use it to play SE IV and Close Combat V...

I am a software engineer. I can work alone doing all development from design concept through final code optimization. In this mode I can write 500 plus pages of new debugged and optimized software per 2000 hour (standard) work year. I have experience at all levels of computing : logic design, board design, firmware, system functions, application interface, and user level applications. Since 1974 I have written over 4000 pages of software. I can work with less experienced engineers or software developers to debug or optimize existing software applications. Depending on the application and maturity of the code, I can audit over a thousand pages of software per year reading the source code.

Since 1990 I have been writing software at home, playing computer strategy games, and reading science fiction. This has generated no income, and I am now ready to go back to work.

W O R K H I S T O R Y
Contract Engineer, Ralph Kirkley Associates July 1989 - May 1990
I worked at IBM Austin to develop assembler language instruction sequences using RTPG and SYSSIM for logic verification of the standard cell VLSI design for the SJS Version of the RS6000 processor. For reference call Doug Balser at 512-838-2526. VM through IBM PC.

Engineer, Lockheed July 1987 - July 1988
I worked in the Shuttle Engineering Simulation lab at Johnson Space Center. My primary assignment was audit of all vehicle ascent phase math models and simulation software except flight control software. This included vehicle mass properties, aerodynamics, engine thrust, equations of motion, actuators, sensors, and controls. I also wrote new software (FORTRAN 100 pages) implementing a multi-body dynamics model for robotic manipulator systems. When required I assisted other engineers and programmers in analysis/debug of simulation problems. For reference call Bernd Strassner (Lockheed) at (281) 483-1770. Gould/SEL 86.

Public Domain Software for Commodore Amiga Sep. 1986 - Jan. 1993
I worked on my Commodore Amiga 1000 under Amiga DOS and Workbench. The five disks of C language source code (1400 pages) are available by request if you have an Amiga computer. I wrote applications for software development tools, a game, and a music application.

Senior Engineer, Datapoint Dec. 1983 - Aug.1986.
I worked in Datapoint test engineering manufacturing support to develop an automated test system (DASL > 1000 pages) for dynamic burn-in of Raven, Phoenix, Tlxap, Mustang, and other products. I also wrote a configuration control system (CHAIN 200 pages) to automate software development based on a configuration file. I designed hardware and wrote firmware (Z80 assembler 400 pages) for a network interface test fixture and a DLL multi-user processor for network/RS232 interface. For reference call Raymond Morford (210) 492-9258, Raymond Metzger (210) 681-0455, Bill Evans (210) 699-6264, or Denny Hassinger (210) 497-7025. Datapoint 8600, Z80.

Software Engineer, Boeing May 1983 - Oct 1983
I wrote embedded software (Pascal 240 pages) for the signal analysis and synthesis component of the avionics systems test set product. PDP-11, HP64000, M68000.

Programmer, NL Industries/McCullough Mar. 1982 - Sep.1982.
I wrote real time software (TDS-11 200 pages) for analysis of oil well down-hole wireline logging for a density/porosity tool. PDP-11.

Engineer Associate Senior, Lockheed Sep. 1979 - Sep. 1981
I worked in the Shuttle Engineering Simulation lab at Johnson Space Center. My primary duties were writing and maintaining software for real time flight simulation. Most of the work was in Fortran (600+ pages). For reference call Bernd Strassner (Lockheed) at (281) 483-1770. Xerox Sigma 5, SEL 32/55, AD10, PDP-11.

Student Programmer, University of Memphis July 1975 - June 1979
I worked part time for the Center for Nuclear Studies to develop a system for automatic isotope analysis from gamma ray data (Fortran 500 pages). Xerox Sigma 9.

Student Programmer, University of Memphis Sep. 1974 - June 1975
I worked part time as a remote batch terminal operator to provide assistance in debugging software and using the computer. Xerox Sigma 9.

I am male, 28, unmarried, living in Knoxville, TN, USA. Have a BS in CS. Been trying to work for the Last year as an independent computer programming consultant, but not making enough dough that way so am starting to look for a real company to work for again.

When I am not hacking on my computer, I enjoy physical activity to return some circulation to my sore gluteus maximi and relieve my chronic carpal tunnel, like weight lifting, hiking, running, and mountain biking. I also enjoy sci-fi movies and reading books about theoretical physics, cosmology, and philosophy.

I have been playing strategy and RPG computer games for many years now. My recent Favorites have been MOO2, Civilization, Fallout 1&2, HOMM3, Alpha Centauri, Starcraft, Diablo, and Jagged Alliance 2. I have been earnestly waiting for MOO3 for years now and even bought the really disappointing BotF from Microprose, then I just found SEIV a couple of weeks ago, and found out that it is everything that MOO3 claims it will be, and more! I ordered the full Version after playing the demo for only a couple of hours. I'm really surprised it hasn't gotten more attention. I know I'm going to recommend it to all the strategy gamers I know.

I think it is very telling that the majority of the posters here are either old-school computer geeks or in the military. That is a perfect indication of just how great a strategy game SEIV is.

We have no gender. We removed it as an inferior method of reproduction several thousand years ago. We clone ourselves. No overpopulation produce as needed.

Okay, that is no problem, I can handle that too. See the song "Afternoon delight"

Rubbing sticks and stones together makes the sparks ignite and the thought of rubbing you is getting so excited skyrockets in flight afternoon delight!

try offering some flowers and choclates. if that does not work. Take him out to dinner. Don' worry though. Richard is not expensive. Just take him to a burger joint.

Attempt to bring post back to normally.

Born 1976 in Brisbane Australia
Lived in or around Computers my entire life
Been playing Computer Games before I could speak, Untill a not long ago I played ever single computer game that I could get my hands on and many that I couldn't. A couple of months ago I was introduced to SE4 when i was looking for a new game to play was absolutly shocked by the Demo that I order the games with in only a couple hours of play (extreame rarety for me).
Since this time I have been challenging everyone I know to the game and many I do not. Have been involved in a few extreamly large 15+ player games and I have to say they are brilliant.

As for my career I use to be a computer Support Officer but have done nothing but play this game for the Last couple of months. They say I have a serious adiction.

I would post more but I gotta get back to playing SE4.

Everything else about me can be worked out from my se4 code below.

LemmyM, just send him an e-mail or post thread on forum addressed to him, and just explain that the members like the thread and would like it cleaned..Throwing in a Burger or two is a good idea, but I would also order fries, Burger King has special for .99
tell him you'll ship it. ha,ha

You know this could start a precedent, next thing you know, Aarron might want in on the action, hmmmmmmm,, how much is a patch worth in terms of burgers, what would everyone be willing to send?? the possibilities are endless.........
