call the game "smeg!"

Re: calling all players

There seem to be some problems, but I quess we just have to try and see. The IP that should connect is 80.223.102.19 ,the port is 1111.
To connect to a server, you have to choose Network from DomII main menu, then enter the ip, then the port, and if everything would work you could then play your turn. However, I'm afraid it won't connect, as I was unable to connect today when I last tested it. Does anyone know if numpad works? I seem to recall that numbers entered with numpad didn't work for the ip address even though they looked the same, but was this fixed?

It will be about 7 hours before I'll open my computer and set DomII as ready to host, so try again then. Please, post here or e-mail me whether it works or not, and while you are at it, tell if you finished your turn or not. The game isn't set to auto-host, as I'm not sure if everyone will be able to connect to my computer. Because of that, nothing will happen before I host it myself, and that won't happen before we get this to work properly. When we reach that point, I'll set up the sheduled autohosting.

Re: calling all players

UPDATE:
Our home connection seems to start coughing every now and then. Earlier today, I couldn't even get a browser anywhere before restarting my computer twice and the modem once.

The networks seemed to work nicely now, but then I hit error with Dominions. It just throws a "Network Error" at me when I try to start it as a server.
EDITED

Okay, DomII didn't work because the port 1111 was already in use... by the game itself! I used --textonly switch to have the game to run insivibly, but didn't think it worked because I didn't see anything. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif

So, it seems there are no problems with Dominions on this end.

Re: calling all players

Hmm, I completely forgot about that. I'll send the files to you all right away. Thanks for reminding me, and sorry about forgotting them.

EDIT: I sent the turns, but forgot to tell what to send back. Until I get the TCP/IP to work, we might as well play a few turns in the old way.

The folder in which you placed the .trn file you should have gotten is the folder for this game. After you have played your turn, your orders will appear there in the nation.2h file. That is, you'll have arcos.2h or ulm.2h or... Of course, you only can get the .2h for the nation you play, so this should be simple enough in this case. You can e-mail this .2h file to me, and if I have everyones' order, I can place them to the correct folder, generate the new turn and send the new .trn files back to you. However, we hopefully WON'T have to do this too many times, as I'm trying to get the TCP/IP thing to work.

Re: calling all players

Try if you can connect to the TCP/IP. That is, choose Network, Connect to Server, enter 80.223.102.19 as the IP, 1111 as the port. If it works, you can just play your turn.

If it doesn't, you should put the .trn file I emailed to you to a folder (named 'smeg', 'calling', 'game' or anything)in your main Dominions II folder. You can then start Dominions and play a game with that name. After you are finished, you should e-mail the orders-file for me. The orders are in the folder you created for the game, in a file named "ulm.2h" or similar, depending on your nation.

Yes! It connected!

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

The TCP/IP connection worked for him, so at least the settings work. Good, I was starting to doubt them.

Shovah: you don't have to send anything, because the connection worked for you. Naresh, like me!, thought that it didn't work. I don't know what's happening, but hopefully (we'll get this working) --> I'll get this to work all the time.

Seems like there is happening alot here. Are severals turns alllready played? Or are we fighting with the first turn? I tryed to connect to the TCP/IP server today but failed.

And can someone tell me where to download the graphics package that the map uses.

Re: calling all players

Illwinter has link to the mapmakers'.

http://www.ascensiongames.com/downloads/MiddleEarth.zip

We are still on turn 1.
You weren't sble to connect yesterday. I suspect the problem is that my computer isn't on all the time. Unfortunately, a fan has started being very loud, and I'd probably have to move my whole computer out of my room. We do have a spare computer (it's old and abandoned), and if it can run DomII and there is still space left in the modem, we could get a 24/7 server.

Where are I to extract these files?

Endoperez October 15th, 2005 06:24 AM

Re: calling all players

The .trn file should go to a new folder in your main Dominions II folder. It might be C:\Shrapnel Games\Dominions II, but can be something else. The new folder can be called anything.

However, I think I figured out something. Yesterday, I converted (or so I thought) an old, spare computer into a server. It wasn't until today that I noticed even I cannot connect to it, from behind the same modem! I had forgotten to turn the Windows Firewall off, and it didn't show up anywhere... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif Hopefully, the TCP/IP works again.

Endoperez October 16th, 2005 01:19 AM

Re: calling all players

Ah, if you are talking about a map, then it should go to the \maps folder in your main \Dominions II folder. Sorry, I have answered to 'how to PBEM' -type questions so often lately I didn't realize this could be about something else... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif

The correct place for maps is the only place in your computer which has .map files, so if nothing else works try searching for those. '*.map' entered into the search field works.

Re: calling all players

Thanks, now all is working well and I have played my turn. Are the positions predefined?

Re: calling all players

Yes. I had made a simple ASCII map earlier in this thread.
It is something like this:

Code:

.....M.....
.....M..1..
...1.......
.....M.....
.1...M....2
........MMM
.MMM.2M....
..2...M....

Where M is mountain, and number shows team.

Re: calling all players

New turn!

Sent Naresh his file, others should check if everything worked. I'll copy every turn, and in the end I'll put them up somewhere on the net. Is this okay with everyone? I can also send anyone their old turn file if they want, for whatever reason. However, we won't jump a turn back barring a stale turn.

Yes. It seems my e-mail program can't move files straight to LAN-shared folders, and that the server computer didn't have Dominions on for most of today. And I managed to avoid doing anything productive, too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Re: calling all players

It should be running. I sent messages to Caelum and C'tis, and I expect them to play their turns sometime soon. Hopefully tomorrow.

And about that e-mail program thing, that's not a big issue. I just have to copy your turn to my computer first, and then move it to the other from there. Takes maybe 10 seconds. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I am confused. Is this now a PBEM game or a server game? If the latter, can the first post be edited to contain the ip address and port, please? It would be easier if there were a fixed place to get that info (rather than paging back and forth through the messages).

Re: calling all players

The ip-address is 80.223.102.19, port 1111. I presumed you (Reverend Z.) would be playing tcp/ip, as per your wish earlier, so I didn't send you the .trn file. I'd also prefer most player playing the through the server, as that is less work for me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif However, I can and will sent the turns to anyone who wans to play PBEM. So it's your choice.

The virus-defense program doesn't update for some reason. I have closed it down until I can get it to work. However, the last turn should come via e-mail. When I get it, I can host the new turn. Were you going to make some changes? If so, I can leave it on for the evening before hosting later.
