Re: Ermor BE

We have until thursday, right? Anyways I'll do it first thing when I get home.

Ermor BE seems powerful with the cb mod. At least, they always overwhelm me in SP.

Perhaps one out of five times the AI will pick BE. You can allways recreate until he does to force him.

I have played several SP with undead Ermor. You could play it on a smaller map around 70 provs or have it as a race to get victory points before Ermor does.

The reason I wanted to post was that I will leave tomorrow and return on the 3:e. At least I should do so but it could be that I may not play a turn before 4:e. You may choose to force host if it is only me left to move.

We are runing this game 24 QH right?

Lately I've been setting up sp games by designing pretenders for the nations, playing a couple turns to get them decent starting prophets, then setting them to AI. They don't get any bonus but thats more fair and for the most part they do as well as hard/impossible ais because I can design the nations to work around some ai stupidity:

- Give them either pretenders that are immobile or whose death is less wasteful (recuperating/immortal and no/low magic).
- I get to pick decent magic and scales. Although I find that the AI may or may not remember to bless their troops so high blessings arn't always best. I tend to give them great scales and a fortified city.

Of course the AI can still do stupid teleports and empowerments but what can you do? I really hope the devs release the turn and orders file formats in dom3. I'd play more mp but havn't had time. Plus I almost always lose in mp http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Oh, so anyways I usually set up Ermor with BE since the other AIs can actually deal with that one.

Re: The Winnowing (Noob Game) - open

wow... that's a really great idea. It would be cool to have a resource of "games" started by other people this way, so you could play single-player against AI's that have a more realistic design, and still have some mystery of what you are facing. Maybe I'll make a half dozen or so, and we can trade http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: The Winnowing (Noob Game) - open

Or be able to build a library of pretenders for each nation, say 10, which could be varied enough that you wouldn't know what you were up against. Oh, and if you could specify via a turn file what type of commander the initial prophet should be.

Just wanted to let everyone know, Puffy's Fire house of hanmmers will be open for buisness in the near future. We will carry a full line of dwarven and fire gear, and will beat any price. We reserve the right to refuse service, and under no condition will serve Atlantians. No shirt, No Shoes, No service.

How is "Dely of Game" handled? I noticed that it said "21 hours till next hosting". Does it automatically host every X hours?

And stupid question, but when you click End Turn...do you just hit exit?

Bluebird February 1st, 2006 09:28 AM

Re: Go go go go go go

Yes, we have 24h Quickhost, means that the turn will be hosted every 24h or when everybody has submitted his turn (whatever happens *first*). When you do "end turn", you just exit. You might reconnect later and change you turn if you want. When you reconnect, the server will ask you if you want to start from scratch or if you want to continue you old turn. If you do not submit a turn within 24h, you are considered as "stale" - which has the same effect as a turn without any commands.

Oversway February 1st, 2006 11:56 AM

Re: Go go go go go go

Another thing to make the game go a little faster: If you are the last person to do their turn (which might be me this time around, I should have checked this morning), wait the few minutes while the turn hosts and do your next turn.

thejeff February 1st, 2006 12:49 PM

Re: Go go go go go go

Note that if you are the last person the game will host when you exit, even if you aren't really done with your turn.
To avoid that, if you connect and then quit without saving, you can play the turn locally and then upload when you reconnect.

Probably not important at this stage, but when turns start taking an hour or more to do, it's nice not to have to do them in one sitting.

nihilistic February 1st, 2006 01:02 PM

Re: Go go go go go go

Just a general question; what if the server crashes at some point during a turn and while some people have submitted their turns and others haven't? Does the server save its state so you (the server's administrator) are able to bring it back up without losing any turn data?

thejeff February 1st, 2006 01:42 PM

Re: Go go go go go go

Yes, barring crashes while uploading a turn, which could easily leave a corrupted turn file. The server just saves each nations turn in the game directory as normal.

TheWatcher February 1st, 2006 10:37 PM

Re: ABYYYYSIIAAAA!

Well, it's a fitting name, but I'm pretty sure it's the name of the devil's wife in Christianity. I got it from a site of demon names. I was going to change it, but I was the last to submit and didn't want to hold the game up. For my pretender, I wanted something hag-like (thus Black Annis), but all the hag-names I found online were stuff like "Jenny Greentooth."

Darn the English and their less-than-frightening monster names.

I thought it was a funny coincidence though. Which Lilith dies first?!

TheWatcher February 1st, 2006 10:42 PM

Mod issues.

Ulm accidentally made their God with CB 5.0 and can't connect. Can he resend his God? I'm guessing that might require a game restart as well.

....doh!
time to restart i suppose.

Shmonk February 2nd, 2006 12:27 AM

Re: The Winnowing (Noob Game) - open

It is probably fine, depending on which pretender you picked. If you want, open up the conceptbalance_complete_5_2.dm file in your Dominions2/mod folder, and look for that pretender (use Notepad or Wordpad or some other text editor to view it). Then open up the conceptbalance_complete_5.dm file and find your pretender in there, and compare the values. I believe there were only a few minor differences between the 2 versions with respect to pretenders, like only 3 or 4 pretenders had changes, the rest are identical.

So we might be okay and won't need a restart. Because the little I know about the mods, if your pretender has the same lines in the 2 files, we shouldn't need a restart. Of course, I could be wrong. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/redface.gif

Wish February 2nd, 2006 12:28 AM

Re: The Winnowing (Noob Game) - open

yeah, I'm pretty sure 5.0 and 5.2 don't effect much in regards to pretenders. as long as you actually have the 5.2 mod it should let you connect.

miltia in big numbers isnt so bad. sure the city guard might cost a little more than what seems worth it but early expansion is crucial and they will help!

and i say we should restart for Zywadugu, first turn can often be important i find.

TheWatcher February 2nd, 2006 02:22 AM

Re: The Winnowing (Noob Game) - open

(I'm good with restarting for Caelum and Ulm)

Turn 1!

INCOME: Almost everyone went up in income, with an especially pertinent jump for Man and Pythium. Abysia dropped rather harshly: blood-hunting?

RESEARCH: Everyone fell into four groups this turn: the high-achievers were Marignon, Tien Chi and Mictian and Ermor, Jotunheim, and Pythium. The mid-achievers were Abysia and Vanheim, Arco, Man, and C'tis. The third group was Pangea and Machaka. Coming in last were our two stalers, Caelum and Ulm.

DOMINION: So pretty! Abysia, Ulm, Pythium, and Marignon lead the way with the most godly power. Flowers are wilting and whatnot. Jotunheim, Caelum, Tien chi, and C'tis form the second group. Below that, Machaka, Pangea, Man, Ermor, and Arco hang out together. Coming in flat is poor Mictian, who hasn't yet found any nubile virgins to stabbidy.

ARMY: This graph just hurts my eyes. It appears almost everyone went up a little, with Vanheim acquiring 61 pieces of cannon-fodder. Caelum and Ulm stayed level, of course.

Good luck in turn two everyone!

(Kiwi post!)

Re: The Winnowing (Noob Game) - open

I'd be willing to do a restart. Ulm, especially, takes it on the chin from missing at turn of production. OTOH, I guess with a game this big you have to expect the occasional stalers.

So, is there a problem with two different pretenders having the same name? Technically I mean, because otherwise only the true queen of the left hand path will survive http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Actually, I think Tien Chi was the high jumper here, due to them acquiring the extremely lethal city guard mercenaries http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Re: The Winnowing (Noob Game) - open

Me, I think "army size" should be a reflection of total biomass, not just "number of individual soldiers". I'm pretty sure Jotunheim would be competitive in a measure of "total pounds of troops".

Tom_Scudder February 2nd, 2006 10:25 AM

Sub needed for Jotunheim.

Yay! New turn! Now everyone do their turn quick so I can get in another in the morning (my time) before handing off to whoever. (By the way, I still need a sub).

Ermor and Pangaea are up to 3 territories. Man, Jotunheim, Tien Chi, Caelum are at 2. Everyone else is still snug in their capitals. Arco (lost army strength, plus his god is in the hall of fame) and apparently Pythium (to judge from cast's remarks here) evidently tried to conquer a neighboring territory and failed.
