We have been waiting since Sunday for him, and he does not respond to emails or PMs. Maybe he's on a holiday or something, but I think it's time to host...
Sorry Agrajag!

Don't forget to update to 3.06! I hosted with with 3.06.

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I know this game is supposed to be "casual" and all that, but I think that 48 hours is more than enough time for someone to look at their turn, think about it, and take it. If people need more time than that they should PM or email you. I think that you should just host every 48 hours unless you hear from someone.

Usually some scaling effect is a good idea, where players get more and more time to play their turns ....

Sorlakind February 2nd, 2007 03:54 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I have to agree with johnarryn on this one. Having to wait almost a week, and this at turn 4, is too much. If it continues at this pace, people will loose interest in the game. And as the game progresses, slack just tends to augment.

So I suggest something along these lines:

- Give 48 hrs time. If everybody has sent their turn host.
- At the end of this time, post here the names of nations that have not sent their turn. Wait 24 hrs.
- If no justification/request for delay/a sign of life is given until the end of these extra 24 hrs, go ahead and host.

Best,

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I find that this game has been going veeeery slow so far. Shouldn't be this slow so early, when it takes 2 minutes max to do your turn.

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I think I like Sorlakind's idea!
So we try to keep up the speed some more, while still allowing for 'casualness', but without keeping people in the dark. It was quite slow indeed for such short & easy turns!

Currently 14/16 turns handed in.
Waiting for Pythium and Oceania.

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I got my turn in now.

The only reason I hadn't subitted it earlier was since the last turn was so slow, it felt like we had more time to think.

Only Oceania left now.

No offense to the Oceanian player (if they are still playing) but this is a little silly. We're pretty much always waiting on them.

I have not heard from Oceania at all since last Sunday, so I am going to host.

Well... turn 5 it turns out that the reason I could see Black Candles from the get-go is that I am right next to Vanheim.

I've totally seen this movie: Ermor next to a double-bless Vanheim, it sort of has a foregone conclusion. Oh well, at least our war will be short.

-Frank

Hey, what happened to positive thinking? It's only turn 5 , and I've never played with Vanheim before... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

Kysosti,
Trollman is an expert at playing diplomatic games. He might only be saying that to make you think he is vunerable.

But then he might know from experience that MA Ermor has very little chance against Vanheim.

Waiting for Pythium and Oceania..

Hmmm Oceania is being set back quite a lot now..
Thinking of what to do.. would feel a bit bad to replace him without having any contact with him... might just be on a holiday or something, thinking he did not need to mention that with a Casual Game...

johnarryn February 4th, 2007 08:57 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I doubt Oceania would just go on vacation without saying something. And anyone who lets themselves stale this much in the early game really doesn't care much about the outcome.

I say host without Oceania so we can keep the game rolling.

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

Pyhtium has now been submitted.

My main concern is R'lyeh now has too big of an advantage. Did Oceania send their password so we can find a replacement? If not we will need to set Oceania to AI.

RicoRico February 4th, 2007 09:30 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

Turn sent...
I agree on the R'lyeh part... If I don't hear anything from Oceania before the next hosting, I'll put him on AI.. :-(
Don't have his password.

Sorlakind February 4th, 2007 11:36 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I am playing Rlyeh and I surely would *NOT* like Oceania to go AI. I do not want to be the unique water nation and in that way, end up having an unfair advantage.

If Oceania doesn't give a sign of life, can't we find a sub or something? Maybe a post on this forum asking for one?

It's the host's call anyway.

Sir_Dr_D February 4th, 2007 11:55 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

Unfortunatly without Oceania's password, setting Oceania to AI is the only option.

Hmmm, forgot the password thingy.

It's a shame really - and yes, for anyone out there wondering, I'm being honest here, I'm much more interested in having a fun and challenging game than any advantage.

On the other hand, my initial position is so sucky, that ending up as the only underwater nation probably won't do me much good.

It's a shame really. Oh well.

RicoRico February 5th, 2007 02:11 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I was thinking... I could try and find a replacement for Oceania, and give him the master password.
If I would then only send him Oceania's .trn files from now on, he wouldn't be able to check on our turns, would he?

Micah February 5th, 2007 04:35 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

my initial reaction is that it would be safe to do so. Plus, at a certain point, you have to trust people not to cheat. The host certainly could be and no one could do much about it...I think a certain level of maturity is expected, the passwords are just an extra layer of security.

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

currently 14/16 turns in. Waiting for Caelum and Oceania.

I'll start recruiting.

RicoRico February 5th, 2007 05:16 PM

Recruiting: Oceania slot opened up!

To those who came for the opened slot:

Our Oceania player has staled the last 3 turns, without giving any reasons, so we want to replace him (we are currently playing turn 6). Know that you will have a tougher time than usual, because of the time lost (well at least you'll have some gold)!
So if you like a challenge:
First to post here, gets the slot.
I'll send the map & password to you when you're accepted!

Ok, Morkilus it is! Welcome to our game.

Please PM me your emailaddress and I'll send you the things you need.
I tried to attach the file to this post, hopefully it works!

Good luck!

15 out of 16 turns are sent. We'll wait a bit more for our new Oceania player to be able to get the files he needs and play&send his turn.

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

Have not had any response from Vanheim.

Just to make sure: Do you guys all accept some kind of rule to be put in place to keep things going, or at least let everyone know if a turn will be late?
So:
- I will send an email and/or PM after you have not sent your turn for about 48 hours.
- Then, if nothing is heard from you after another 24 hours, turn will be hosted anyway.

I have no problem with people having other things to do from time to time, as long as we know what's going on. It just seems that people suddenly stop playing without giving notice (still heard nothing from our initial Oceania player), and I wouldn't want to wait for that...

Agreed?

If I don't hear from Vanheim tonight, I'll host the turn Wednesday morning, around 8 a.m. (GMT+1). Then it would be 4 days since our latest hosting.

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

maybe looking for a replacement for them? or even restart for me at least.

Ewierl February 13th, 2007 06:04 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

A total of 72 hours without any word or warning seems reasonable to me. Maybe look for a replacement before they stale a second time? We did let Oceania stale twice, though.

I don't advise a restart; some person flaking hardly seems reason to throw out the weeks we've been playing so far.

Teraswaerto February 13th, 2007 06:10 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I like a fairly rigid hosting schedule. If someone misses the deadline without prior warning that they will do so, then tough luck. A stale is rarely fatal. Multiple stales, well, usually when someone doesn't do their turns on time it's going to stay that way - until they drop out completely that is.

There are exceptions to this, certainly, but delaying the game a lot is generally bad.

johnarryn February 13th, 2007 08:15 PM

Re: Casual PBEM (looking for players)

I agree... I think 48 hours + 24 hours is more than fair. In terms of replacements, I think staling multiple times (with nothing said) is ground for this. I see no need to start again, however.
