That´s right, shall is for us or I only.
will can be used in any.

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

Huh? Never heard that. Sorry to go OT in a thread for a game I'm not even in. But what about the meek? You know, "blessed are the cheesemakers, and the meek shall inherit the earth," and all that sort of stuff. (Well, obviously in dominions the meek are just going to inherit the pointy end of a sword, but I couldn't think of a better example.)

llamabeast December 29th, 2007 09:46 PM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

Okay, I couldn't resist googling this:

Indicative:
I shall; you will; he, she, or it will. (same for plural).
Imperative:
I will; you shall; he, she, or it shall. (again, same for plural).

So, Torin is correct in the more common indicative sense. However, in the more forceful imperative it's the opposite.

Child: I won't tidy my room.
Mother: You _shall_. (i.e. a command)

This doesn't shed much light on "the meek shall inherit the earth" - apparently it's an order. Or more probably, an error.

Sorry for all the OT discussion on the thread for a game me and vfb aren't even in guys!

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

No problem http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I've always thought that shall implies a greater degree of certainty. So it’s generally not appropriate to us for others except in commands and things like that. Seems I was kind of close to the real usage.

That R’lyeh shall be thrown back in the sea was some kind of divine declaration. Or wishful thinking http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

vfb December 29th, 2007 10:12 PM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

"Shall" is also subjunctive, meaning "let it be so".

The meek shall inherit the earth == All you aggro nations r gonna get pwned.

The madness shall be pushed back into the sea == Dude, we're gonna go pwn some crazy starspawn.

So, Kadelake, you were correct to use "shall." And I promise I'll depart this thread now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif If anyone wants to continue discussing "shall", let's head to the Bar & Grill.

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

Ok, R'lyeh attacked me this turn and I can sadly only repeat what someone else said before: I don't stand a chance. Really, I mean it.
I think that our only solution is a great alliance against them. Ulm must understand this: he should stop his aggression against me if he doesn't want to be the next on R'lyeh's list.

Aapeli January 7th, 2008 04:20 PM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

A declaration from Ulm:

We hereby declare that we are to break our non aggression pact with Rlyeh and join war against the increasing number of madness. After three turns (turn number 37) we shall launch our attacks against the insane.

It is regrettable that we should break such a long lasted and fruitful peace but I guess the God of Ulm has finally realized the danger just next door.

Tharsonius January 7th, 2008 05:36 PM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

What great danger? Don't believe the propaganda...
That was the great chance for you to get all of the old Marignon lands from Pangaea, good luck to get it on your own now.

In the end you all help Utgard to win this game.

Utgård is breaking our non aggression pact with R'lyeh and will resume the war on turn 39.

Thanks for finding me the biggest threat. I hope I have at least a chance of winning http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

T'ien Ch'i declares that they are to break their NAP with Rlyeh and will start the war on turn 37.

Well if you are playing rlyeh its obivous that you got to prepare to be hated by everyone. The same goes to Ermor of course.

Im starting to feel that our resistance against madness is paying off. I guess just ganging up and finding allies is the best way of beating the so called "uber nations".

Fish?

Tharsonius January 14th, 2008 12:57 PM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

...

What "uber nation"? You have been tricked, thats all.
I have lots and lots of weak troops that die easy and eat lots of gold too. But I wasn't anymore threat then every other nation in this game.

It's not very hard to win 5 against 1, especially when all 6 are equally powerful. Better look who will be the next target and who profit the most from this "war"...

Kadelake January 14th, 2008 04:17 PM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

Yes, the game would be quite broken if one nation was able to win against 5 other. Still I think that R'lyeh is a really good nation and that you are a good player. You were in the best spot before everyone ganged up you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Good move to pillage the northern coast by the way. How did you manage to get one province from 10k population to 600? My army had to resort to eating their dead and some people got some nasty diseases. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif

Tharsonius January 14th, 2008 06:08 PM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

I think I wasn't even strong enough to fight against two (on land).

One of the few things the freespawns are good for is pillage... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
In one province I killed 10k pop a turn.

I'm not mad that everyone ganged up on me, I can understand most of them, they want the rich land Man left behind. I'm only a little angry about Ulm joining them, he had the chance to grow stronger on Pangaea but he stopped this war and turned on me. Now all he got is a 600 pop province (and a few bad dreams... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif).

Yeah I concuered a farm province with income 1. Was a bit suprising. And yes the bad dreams were my prophets who attacked under water (with archers that couldnt shoot! Lesson learned there http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif).

Man those tartarians are powerful. What is that thing they have that makes my troops die when they attack him? I mean its not blood vengeance is it (there was no icon fo blood vengeance)?

And damn those horrors are a real pain in the *** too. Nice tactic to attack with a scout afterwards. Didnt know that one.

Kadelake January 26th, 2008 06:31 PM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

Tharsonius: Ah, that would explain it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif

Aapeli: It's the aegis, an unique shield that gives medusa petrification. Only one of them have it though. Never tried it before but it was really scary to see the effect on your templars http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Yeah, I really like those lesser horrors. They only cost nine slaves and my Norns can cast them with an astral and a blood booster. They're really good against province defence http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Your strong flying commanders are a real pain as well. I think that your god and vampire counts was my biggest trouble. Without them I could have immobilized your armies with infernal disease.

Aapeli January 27th, 2008 06:41 AM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

Ah the vampires. My favourite commanders. They are sneaky, flying and can lead up to 80 rangers behind enemy lines (wich I was about to do but then my capital was conquered http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif). The virtue god was a bit experimental. An air mage is not so usual with Ulm.

Never knew the aegis was that powerful http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif. I guess the only defend from it is magic resistance.

Kadelake January 27th, 2008 09:37 AM

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)

It seems to me that Ulm is simply not as good as the other nations in this game. Your mages can't really compare and your troops, while though, have low MR.

The forces of the Nature will join the nations of Ulm, Ctis and R'lyeh in their desperate battle against Utgard. I hope we'll have a glorious death.

To Utgard: we have a NAP3 so this war won't begin before turn 66.

To Tienchi: what are you waiting for? I don't think you realize that Utgard is even a lot stronger than what the graphs are showing.

More like two attacks. It was harder to kill you then I thought. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
One of the werewolves you killed had flying boots so I could easily have gotten him to safety... if he hadn't decided to go insane four turns in a row. I was watching in dismay as his retreat was cut of. Now in hindsight I should have sent a scout to him and tried to sneak out his equipment.
