Hmm, can't imagine why Mictlan objected to you jumping into the middle of their war. :) Good news that some tarts were killed, though!

Aby's dominion seems to be spiking frighteningly fast, along with gem income. :)

Thanks for the congrats. They say you learn more from defeat than from victory. I just hope I learned enough to do better in the next game

Good luck everyone, hope to meet you again in some other game.

Farewell, jmb. I never got to see your valor demonstrated up close, but you certainly have my respect for seeing a multi-front war through to its bitter conclusion.

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

I need to add about 12 hours to the turn - I am on the road. Sorry for any inconvenience.

DonCorazon April 4th, 2009 05:27 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Oops, I owe Valerius an apology. It seems I jumped the gun on our NAP. I got a bad feeling that I screwed up when I saw Abysia did not attack me this turn, while I launched a pretty massive assault. So I looked back and realized I was supposed to give the orders on turn 67, with the attack taking place on 68. I try to comply with my NAPs and this was a pretty major botch on my part, especially since Valerius has been more than honorable.

I am open to any solutions Valerius - a rollback while painful, is fine with me if others don't mind. Or if you want to play on as is, I can just concede the victory to you. I dont want to win via treachery or have you think it was intentional. I think it was just how you worded the PM so that turn 67 stuck in my head even though you were very clear - I just didn't check until after I saw the turn host.

analytic_kernel April 4th, 2009 06:54 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

I'm okay with a rollback if that's what Valerius wants. Resending the .2h file isn't that big of a deal to me.

Valerius April 4th, 2009 10:34 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Well, that was a surprising turn! :)

Thanks to both of you for being ok with a rollback. If it is ok with Mictlan as well then I would like to take you up on the offer since the attack was unintentional and I was pretty unprepared. In any case, I wouldn't want you conceding the war DC - that would feel like an empty victory to say the least.

If we do rehost I of course won't change my orders - just resend my turn.

DonCorazon April 5th, 2009 01:18 AM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Ok, I am going to presume Mictlan is ok with a rollback and hopefully won't mind just resending his turn. Thanks, and sorry again for the mix-up on my part. Now I will have to be extra-creative on the following turn to come up with some surprises for Abysia! :)

Valerius April 5th, 2009 12:09 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Thanks! I have resent my turn.

Valerius April 7th, 2009 06:36 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Well, that was painful. I think I liked your first attack better, DC. ;)

After having such excellent luck with horrors attacking provinces and scouts then taking over my luck changed this turn. In almost every case the scout arrived before the horror. :hurt:

BTW, Burden of Time was a nice touch - boots of youth won't help me against that.

DonCorazon April 9th, 2009 03:06 AM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Hehe V, it was mutually painful - I liked your first - "passive resistance" non-attack better than the endless horror spam. The newer players in the game will enjoy that experience should they have the chance to fight you. I remember the first time I got horror spammed I was like - wtf - I just lost my entire kingdom in 1 turn...:(

Anyway gents, I need to ask for a 24 hour extension. Just returned from a week of business travel and its the wife's b-day tomorrow. I almost have my turn done, but need to give it a careful lookover to counter Valerius's insidious plans :)

We may even consider going to 72 hours though I have enjoyed the quick pace in this game. Things will speed up for me after Thursday in any case. Thanks, dc

Valerius April 9th, 2009 02:01 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

I'm glad you extended hosting. I was thinking of asking for a delay as I would have had to rush to complete my turn.

Now if I can only think of something effective to do. The horror spam was almost a complete failure - not only did I not take many provinces but I think you got most of them back the same turn when your troops moved. Time to try Plan B. Hmm, I did have a Plan B, didn't I?

I'm ok with sticking with 48 hours, with delays as needed. My empire is becoming smaller and easier to manage anyway. ;)

analytic_kernel April 9th, 2009 07:59 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

I'd be okay with 72-hour hosting.

the kernel makes his move! be sure to cut Pan in on your newfound wealth. :)

I am happy to keep it at 48 hours and just be liberal with extensions as needed.

Sure, DC, Arcoscephale will be happy to cut into you with its newfound wealth.... :p

Our lawyers have researched the burdensome issue created by your recent casting of a murderous global, and discovered an established precedent in intercosmic law[1-8]. Therefore:

For the magical ravages upon our lands and incomes thereof and for the hastened demise of our elderly researchers, we must now consider the NAP between Pangaea and Arcoscepahle to have been rendered null and void by Pangaea's casting of the Burden of Time. Furthermore, the existing state of peace and commerce between our two nations is no longer possible in this environment. We hereby declare immediate war upon the nation of Pangaea.

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

We in Pan once held Arcosephalean scholars in high esteem but they have clearly lowered their academic standards. Relying on the ramblings of treacherous rogues to justify their causa belli is a travesty of international justice. Unfortunately, now that our last friend has stabbed us in the back, Pan is now at war with the whole world and has no court to which we can appeal, other than the old fashioned trial by blade!

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Did someone just cast Wrath of the Sea or is that just flooding from all of the crocodile tears shed by Pangaea's propaganda ministry?

Valerius April 10th, 2009 07:58 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Abysia welcomes the noble nation of Arcoscephale to the fight against Pangean tyranny!

United the nations of the world will surely (well, hopefully) prevail against Pan's army of tartarians.

In other news, the Abysian military command has been ... retired ... due to complete incompetence in the waging of this war.

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Our thread slipped to the 2nd page so thought I'd take this opportunity to check in with all my foes. How are those old mages holding up? :)

Valerius April 17th, 2009 01:38 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

What old mages? All my mages are demonbreds. Oh right, I used to have these things called warlocks. Curse you, Pan!

On the bright side, it does help on upkeep costs, which has become an issue given my rapidly decreasing number of provinces. :)

analytic_kernel April 17th, 2009 07:50 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

You may have noticed that the Arcane Nexus disappeared - thanks to its caster being one of the first Astrologers afflicted by BoT. Least they've managed to take some of your commanders to Hades with them, courtesy of Mind Hunt.

But, why I am telling you this? So that all your two-legged goats can gloat?

(I'll second Valerius' comment about it helping upkeep. Suiciding droves of my predecessors' chariots into your territories also helps a bit.)

Valerius April 18th, 2009 02:50 AM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Abysia is pleased to announce ... well not quite a victory but at least we gave as good as we got. Admittedly, our castle is still under siege but it's better than the other battles in this war have gone for us.

DonCorazon April 18th, 2009 10:16 AM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Valerius is too humble - that was quite a stinging blow and a reminder to always check what's inside the fort before you storm. Doh - the one fort I didn't check! It seems Aby has all the royalty of hell, hordes of vamps, Father Illearth, etc hanging out in this one spot. Anyway, hats off to V. The Pangean general in command has been demoted to latrine cleanup for our Minotaur batallion. :)

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Congrats to Valerius and his wedge of Demon Knights for their valiant (and successful) defence of the entrance to the fortification in Summerlands.

Valerius April 19th, 2009 08:58 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Ha! Now I've got you just where I want, Pan. FotA has been cast - it's only a matter of time until the anti-Pan alliance is victorious.

DonCorazon April 19th, 2009 09:29 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Hehe, I don't know about that - i was about to offer you guys a chance to concede! :)

Valerius April 19th, 2009 10:07 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Well, what do you think allies? It seems (extremely) unlikely that Pan can be defeated. I am ok with conceding but will also continue if Arco and Mictlan would like to try out some tactics before we finish.

analytic_kernel April 20th, 2009 08:52 AM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Well, BoT killed off most of my chances to do any fun experiments on DC's empire. I could be using the time saved from this game to focus on my other endgame, where opportunities to do fun experiments abound and I actually have the means to take them. But, I'll stay in as long as Abysia and Mictlan are still in (assuming I'm not eliminated outright).

DonCorazon April 20th, 2009 11:39 AM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

It might be up to you guys to decide as Mictlan doesn't post much here. From my perspective, I could also go either way. The turns are still fun but they are taking longer and longer.

Valerius April 20th, 2009 02:48 PM

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

Pan has the game wrapped up. Given that, it makes sense for all of us to free up time for our other games. Abysia concedes.

Congratulations, DC! You deserve the victory. I wish I could have given you a better fight but my planning throughout the game was poor (what did my pretender, "Al Bundy", really add to my nation?) and yours was excellent (Chalice, WoM, tarts, and BoT for good measure - also good, balanced forces between troops and SCs). I never saw your pretender so I'm curious if it was an awake rainbow? It seemed like your gem income was strong right from the beginning.

Also, thank you to analytic_kernel and shogi for stepping in to keep the game going and to DC for taking over admin responsibilities. Good game, everyone!

Re: Epic Battles(PBEM) - Game on!

I went with a non-conventional strategy (order/non-gorgon) for Pan after getting frustrated playing a conventional Pan design (turmoil/luck - Gorgon) in another MP game. So my pretender was an awake Enchantress that site searched and was key in getting me early magic diversity and making use of Con 8. I found some key indie sites - High Temple of the Magii for fire/astral and then later in the game found the Ivory Tower for those amazing A/S sorceresses, which just happened to be in the same place where I already had a fort/lab to make use of the Steel Ovens. :) Seriously, my magic site karma in this game was extraordinary, culminating with finding Mt Chaining about 15 turns ago.

I made a big mistake getting in between Mictlan and Pythium - and earning Mictlan's wrath. Fighting 3 on 1 was not easy, especially in terms of trying to decide what to do. I was getting nervous about Aby's strong dominion, blood sacrificing, and vampires but wanted to try and knock out lower research foes first so was throwing most of my weight at Mictlan while working on Undead Mastery and gearing up some Lich's with penetration devices to deal with vamp hordes. I don't recall what my starting Dominion was but it sure felt low in the endgame...

Anyway, I will attach my last turn file if anyone’s interested – I always like seeing them.

Thanks for a fun game, and thanks alot to analytic_kernel and shogi - you guys were great subs - we had a nice pace with no stales in the endgame - amazing! Look forward to playing with you guys again sometime! :)

Thanks for the fun game, guys. This was my first ever MP game of Dom3, and you made it a good experience. I hope to play with you again sometime.

Congrats on your victory, DC.

Thanks for letting me step in and play a bit. DC - awesome game - I've not had quite that effective of a tart drop on me before - nice job. I definately learned a thing or three. :D
Good luck to everyone in future games!
