Re: Waaargs without end (Upload pretenders)

Yes, I saw Helheims great army last turn. Half had a mind to jump in my Treeant with an army (via portal stone) my Asynja, the Shishis, some more Air mages and a ton of Druids.
Luckily such notion leave me fast and I usually continue my rather defensive and save playstyle.

Your backstabbing did not much damage Tiavals, in fact I don't think I lost a single Druid to it. And Niefelheim gave me some of your Water Gems when he surrendered.
Observed some of your Dai Onis against Hinnom. They were a fearful sight then. Could imagine Helheim having a hard time against you. And I would probably have entered the fight 3-4 turns from now.
I still think Atlantis could have achieved something in this game. But for a war against Atlantis I had 200 Water Gems stored for an unbreakable Sea of Ice.

Yeah, that's the main problem with playing water nations. You could be put out of the game way too easy.

Hi,

Just wanted to say I'm really sorry for dropping away like that. My laptop got drowned in beer, but I still should have let you know I couldn't play. Sorry.

Just out of curiosity: What did you hope to achieve by attacking me? You couldn't really expect to win that war. And we had been neighbours and almost friends before. I even gifted a province to you. So what was the point?

Olm, your question blows my mind, as its basically the same reason you won the game. The fact you need to ask it, is mind blowing.

Re: Waaargs without end (Upload pretenders)

Well, it was my first MP game so I was kind of figuring things out as I went along. But I figured you had a winning position, and I wanted to get into a war to see what kind of stuff tactics I could expect to face. Also short of a gangdown, it didn't seem like you could be stopped. And I hoped to distract your forces from Niefelheim, to give him some respite.

And I suppose I did kind of overestimate the power of my Yakshas, which I came to regret quite quickly when the Gifts started raining. :p

But I have ordered a new computer, stationary this time. So I hope to try for some revenge in a couple of weeks.

Well played anyway!

I did not win the game, unless you all agree to that. I was in the best position, but the outcome was far from decided.

And I don't understand what you want to say about the reason for attacking me. Sure, if a nation gets too big one should think about attacking it. But a solitary attack by a single, small nation has no chance of success and is as such quite futile. Niefel made the same mistake. He told me he attacked, because I was too large. But that achieves nothing.
Had Niefelheim, Kailasa and Sauromatia worked together and coordinated their plans, they probably could have had a chance. But like this it was futile. Diplomacy is key in this game! Thats something beginners underestimate.

And there is always the other way: Ally with the large nation. Why not a joined victory? I am not the one to battle my longtime allies in the end, just to have my name as the solitary winner of the game.

Re: Waaargs without end (Upload pretenders)

Nief was prompted by allies who did not show up on the battlefield. Also, Gift of Heaven saved your bacon. It was a great game, I learned alot. I still have 10 succubus and 600 bloodslaves with 30 blood commanders. If Ulm, Sauro, or Heilheim had gone 100% to war against you, I would reclaim my lands.

I did gift my gems to Marvingi a couple turns back in an effort to reach a peace settlement, but he wasn't buying. The problem with these big games is that by turn 50, if you are doing well, it takes like 2 hours to plan a turn. So, some people are not willing to play things through if they don't feel like they have much to gain.

I am willing to call Olm the victor. But I refute his claim that going to war with him was a mistake. I did my best...and fell short...This time!

Re: Waaargs without end (Upload pretenders)

Olm, mate, I was one of the more experienced players in this game. Take it from me, you won it.

Others with much less experience than I, may have a different opinion, but thats because they haven't seen how games progress when someone has a big advantage and others don't want to fight him/her.

My congratulations are 100% serious and sincere.

I am NOT going to spell it out, people learn best from their own experience.
Agree with me or disagree, I could care less.

I just wish a few more of the players here were in Primordial where I am doing well and would offer me an easy win.

Actually I don't, because the game becomes boring at that point and many great opportunities for game play get missed like they did in Waaarghs.
Seriously, most people left in the game missed a great finish and a chance at winning the game......don't blame me, some of you need to look into the mirror for a scape goat. Live and learn.

For me the game offers more with regards to its challenges than an easy win.

Yellow you did an outstanding job in this game and impressed me the most, more so even than Olm who won it.

Olm said you had disappeared for some time and were no threat to him but you cleverly saved your armies until the Calvary arrived.

Unfortunately the calvary had a brain fart and never showed up, ensuring the win for Olm.

Just awaiting the flak now from others involved, defending their actions...lol...

Hey I make mistakes, others need to learn from this game if they don't want a similar thing to happen in the future.

Just in case you think I am blowing smoke up Yellows arse, he and I are at war in Primordial...once again...good on you mate for doing so.

Oh, and you fighting Olm in this game was 100% the right thing to do Yellow. Anyone who thinks differently is a real danger not only to himself, but every other Dom 3 player.

I do not say it was a mistake to fight me. But I say it was a mistake to do it alone without backup. If you had allies who didn't show up, that's another matter. But had you communicated with Sauromatia, you could have launched a much more dangerous attack. Sauro had just cancelled the NAP with me when you attacked and cut right between us. Convenient for me. Thats why I never took Cuna Eral and Imictan back from you. This postponed his attack on me for a lot of turns, by then you were essentially finished.
Had you attacked simultaneously I would have been in real trouble.

About your surrender: I did not understand it. I thought "surrender" means: I am done and will go AI. That's why I answered with a large teleport action to claim your lands. Had you offered GEM's to me for peace, I had taken that offer, as Kailasa had just attacked me. In fact, had you at that time asked for peace (a third time) I would probably have accepted, as I really regretted turning you down the turn before, when Kailasa attacked.

And to speak up for Sauromatia: When he finally decided to break through your lands to attack me, he did so 100%. He just had not as much success as you, because I was prepared.
To be honest my greatest fear was that you were allied with Ulm, as you both worked together against Arco. But Ulm agreed to a NAP when we met.

And finally a tip for Niefel from an enemy: rely on Skinshifters rather than Giants. They are cheaper and have more staying power. Especially against GfH. I was much more worried about your Skinshifters and always relieved to find those large, blue meteor targets.

I understand there were a number of new or fairly new players in this game.

Still, I only found out about the above long after it happened when I queried Neif about any allies he had.

Big mistake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of many committed in this game.

Hi all,

Bit sad to see this one ended just as I have time to play again ;)

I'd agree with Olm's assessment that he hadn't won but was in the best position. Myself, when time got short, I had to drop all diplo and shifted to a turtling strategy. I was hoping that Helheim and Maverni would clash in Kailasa and then I could vulture up the remains. Reading this thread, I think it's pretty clear a combined effort could have brought down Maverni (I myself was sure Neif/Sauro would bring them down to a manageable size so scuttled away to my summoning labs) and was more worried about Helheim and Atlantis. Then I double-staled through personal circumstances, and the balance had shifted markedly.,,

Good game all, especially Olm.

I was going to attack Maverni earlier but got attacked by Yomi and that slowed me down. Perhaps that could have been the difference.

I would hardly call that a proper attack, it was maybe 2 turns of fighting where I lost a vast majority of my force and you didn't lose much at all. But I suppose it did make you reconsider things. :D

Re: Waaargs without end (Upload pretenders)

Folket was also attacked by Atlantis in a random, yet bloody brawl. His invasion plans were set back about 4 turns, and when he went in, I don't think he initially sent many Mages. Not sure how the battles went.

I had expected the attack by Sauromatia, as he cancelled our NAP. So I was prepared for that attack all the time and for fighting Sauromatia an earlier attack wouldn't have made much of a difference. However it would surely have given you more room and time to breath.
The attack went a bit like yours, only much shorter. He reached my first castle and was blown away by Meteors. After that we did a bit of dance around Imictan with strong armies. There were one or two other larger battles but nothing decisive. Meanwhile I captured all your suthern provinces. He than started raiding with Enaries and I started raiding with a Treeant and Gargoyles. I was much more successful in that, and I think Sauromatia was just on the brink to get into real trouble.

So you also played a false game with me. I guess I am just too trusting for this game. I had envisioned a clash of two blocks for the end, me, T'ien Ch'i and Kailasa and perhaps Yomi against Helheim and its allies. I would have tried to protect T'ien Ch'i against every threat. I gave Yomi free fire GEMs to fight Helheim. And all the while you all thought about the best way to bring me down.
I really need to think about my morale attitude towards this game.

I think the "Diplomacy: Machiavellian" aspect is key here.

I got the impression the majority decided the game is over - I'm not sure though yet.

Maybe - with a little hint on the intention of this game as a "win-and-turn-ai" kind of game - all players who belive they have won should just turn ai.
The rest who still wishes to play on may do so.

Olm October 24th, 2012 03:55 PM

Re: Waaargs without end (Upload pretenders)

I still don't think I won, but I will turn AI nonetheless, as that should be funnier for those who continue.
I would have played on, but not with several major powers (at least Helheim and Ulm) AI.

So I wish you luck against my AI successor. He has enough power to put up some fight.

CU and have fun!

So you turned this into an SP-game.
I am content to see my former empire still thrive. Says me I left it in a very solid position.
Would love to get a glimpse at it now.
