Well, my dad is married, and he is an engineer... So I guess he had a girlfriend while he was an engineer...... Well wait a minute... he's only worked at that place for 17 years.... and my parents have been married 20... So I guess you got a good question....

For those with some sort of Engineering background. You might find this humorous!

You Might be an Engineer If...

Buying flowers for your girlfriend or spending the money to upgrade your RAM is a moral dilemma. OR

You are at an air show and know how fast the skydivers are falling. OR

You see a good design and still have to change it.
AND LASTLY

The salespeople at Radio Shack can't answer any of your questions.

Re: Lurk Report HERE

It's not so difficult to decide whether to buy flowers or RAM.
If you have a girlfriend, always buy the flowers, unless it's your NOTEBOOK computer we're talking about.

It's very difficult to calculate how fast the skydivers are falling, because skydivers have an irregular shape, and therefore the math for the air resistance is complex. The calculation is easier if we are considering falling spheres, but it is still not that simple. It would probably be easier to empirically determine a skydiver's speed of descent by observing many skydivers and measuring their speeds. Once you have some statistics on the speeds, you will know the ballpark figure. If you know the distance from yourself to the skydiver and you have a stopwatch, you can roughly calculate the speed by seeing how far they go down in a period of time.

A good design is not necessarily the BEST design. It is very possible that the design may be further improved to increase performance, improve efficiency, or reduce the cost of manufacture, or to make it easier to service, etc.

The sales people at Radio Shack don't know what a zener diode is. They don't know the difference between a PNP and NPN transistor and can't help you select the best transistor for your application. They think that a transformer is a toy robot that turns into a car. Well, I'm sure not ALL the sales people, there, just some of them.

Kamog, I guess we're both engineers then.

The optimist thinks the cup is half full; the pessimist thinks the cup is half empty; the engineer thinks they could have designed a smaller cup.

I never bought my girlfriend flowers, I gave her books or CD's (must have worked because we're married now). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

DavidG, <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Why of course they to. And a FEW, even manage to keep one long enough to get kissed. And after the kiss, an even SMALLER manage to keep a girlfriend long enough to have sex. Assuming the sex is EXCEPTIONAL! And after that, an even SMALLER manage to keep their girlfriends long enough to get married. Of course that number gets reduced buy about 50%, due to divorce. So, RAGS is sole survivor. All the other ENGINEERS have reentered the dating force!
Hope that clears that up!

Kamog, I rest my case!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

You Might be an Engineer If...

You spent more on your calculator than you did on your wedding ring.

OR,
You Might be an Engineer If...
You've ever tried to repair a $5 radio.

Re: Lurk Report HERE

ALL engineers DO have girlfriends, if you count the imaginary girlfriends.

Well, why should someone spend a lot of money on a piece of jewelry that has no practical use? A wedding ring is a piece of metal with (usually) a polished stone attached to it. Does it really make a difference whether you spend $200 or $2000 or $20,000 on it? Given that the different priced rings have exactly the same functionality, it is logical to choose the most cost-efficient one. You can't go too cheap, however, because this is an emotional thing.

A calculator, on the other hand, does have more functionality when you buy an expensive one. The Hewlett Packard HP48GX is a very nice graphing programmable calculator with expandable memory.

By the way, Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) calculators are the best! RPN is more convenient because intermediate values are placed on the stack and can be viewed and manipulated.
Instead of entering this:
5 x (10 - 8 ) + 6 / 14 =
You do this:
5 enter 10 enter 8 - x 6 enter 14 / +
The only problem with RPN calculators is that when people borrow it, they spend 5 minutes looking for the = sign and then they complain that they can't use it. (And they're not interested in listening when you try to teach them how RPN works!)

And repairing a $5 radio, why not? It doesn't really matter how much the radio cost, you just open it up and try to fix it - just for fun!

Edit: I put "Enter" inside < > and it just gave me a blank space!

Here's another way to tell whether someone's an engineer: ask them what the square root of -1 is.

If they're not an engineer, they'll either give you a blank look, or tell you that the answer is i.

Engineers will tell you that it is j.
(We don't use i for square root of -1 because it could be confused with I as in electrical current.)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">When I used to skydive we almost always fell at the same speed. AS we can adjust the speed by making ourselfs have a greater or lesser air resistance. You want to fall as fast as the other skydivers so that you can do formations.,
If I recall rightly (Haven't jumped since 1994) we calculated that the avarage speed we fell at was about 190 km/h, wich we could increase up to over 300 km/h by either going headfirst, feet first or if several people in a circle put their feet in the middle making a wedge shaped formation with the point downwards. How much we could reduce this speed I don't remember but I do remember that it hurts when someone below you reduced their speed, "flying" into you from below.

I myself have hit a formation from below, sending them hurtling all over the skye, unfortunatly there was a video phografer present outside the formation documenting it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

It looks like a locomotive hits a standing crowd!
(we all have to be newbies sometime (or as it's called in skydiving , turkeys (a bird that doesn't fly)))

Re: Lurk Report HERE

..hmmm I'm happy and sad all at the same time.. I made it into the 'Lurk Report' but I'm 14th on the list and there was no link to the 'Avatar Emporium' Geoschmo set up for me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

..and I thought my thread was one of the most active this past week! (240+ new avatar pics in 7 days. That's an average of 34+ per day WoW! I'm smokin' http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif )

C'ya, I got more Avatars to attack! Charge!..

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Still haven't made it to the Lurk report, well the FAQ has been quiet for a long time now, and that's all I've got.
Maybe I should get into modding, just to get into the lurk report. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: Lurk Report HERE

David Gervais, the LURK REPORT is not done on a popularity bases. Or how active the thread is, I dont count Posts. It obviously needs to have some activity within the Last seven days! When I start to prepare the report I just log on and the way the threads sit is the way I report them. I decided to do this so no one could say I was showing favoritism. Is so happens I started this report very early this morning. Only 2 other Users on the Forums.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Ah, I found the link on your thread. The Avatar Emporium is on the PBW server. I only report on threads on the Space Empires: IV Forum. I did give both the threads I saw mention.

Re: Lurk Report HERE

mlmbd, but, but,..but I was only kidding http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif I wasn't really sad. It's just my way of letting you know I read your report. (by the way the lurk report is very well done, and I'm sure that many people peek in here to find out what's happening.)
In fact since you posted the report I have seen several new people poping over to my avatar thread to check the action out. Thanks! You are providing a welcome and usefull service by writing this report every week. Keep up the fantastic work.

BTW.. you should have known that I've been having way too much fun this week to have a sad bone in my body. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Cheers!

Re: Lurk Report HERE

David Gervais, sorry for my misinterpretation. I just spend lots of hours (which I do love, or I wouldn't keep doing the report) trying to make sure I am as fair to everyone as is possible!

I am glad you are enjoying yourself! Everyone should.

WELCOME THE EIGHTH (AND POSSIBLY FINAL) EDITION OF THE LURK REPORT! Brought to you by mlmbd http://www.shrapnelgames.com//ubb/icons/icon6.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif ;

GOOD DAY ONE AND ALL!!! Hope you are having, or will have a GREAT Friday!! As well as an AWESOME X-MAS! Followed by an OUTSTANDING NEW YEAR!

FIRST, This is going to be the smallest LURK REPORT ever! OK, you can stop cheering now. Geesh! The LURK REPORT is going on vacation for TWO (you heard me) TWO weeks. MAYBE FOR GOOD. Since I started this thread. There has been very little feed back. So, in the next TWO WEEKS, you decide whether or not you want it to continued. You don't have to post much. Or anything relevant for that matter. Just so I know I am not doing this for MYSELF! OK, enough said on that.

There is only ONE item to report this week!

Ruatha, has been making additions to his FAQ or Frequently Asked Questions for Newbies. You can read all about it here;
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin...;f=23;t=005518 Go on, I know you have a question about SEIV!
He has also started a thread if you would like to make an addition. Or just help him out. You can get there, right here; http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin...;f=23;t=007663 Don't pass up the chance to be FAMOUS!

OK! That is it for this week. Boys and Girls!

So for NOW; This is, mlmbd http://www.shrapnelgames.com//ubb/icons/icon6.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif , Signing off!!!

I "THANK YOU", And I bid you WELL!!

Re: Lurk Report HERE

So much for plans to get 2 mentions... oh well, next time I'll do it for sure.

The lurk report should stay! I still think you should find a place to archive all the previous reports for posterity and (possibly) reference.

The Encyclopedia Malfadorica seems like a logical place, or I could host the report on my site, if you can stand my habit of forgetting to update it for months at a time .
