I for one did it for about 10 years before finding PBW server, but PBW simplifies large games very much!

Hmmm, its a shame that it's down again. Ahh well, better for it to be down for a few more days then to have it up now only for it to blow up again and have to wait on more parts.
Take your timr Geo and have it done right so as to avoid future problems. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Wow, these are serious withdrawal symptoms. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

But guys, there are benefits to everything, if we are willing to look for it.

Now you can put all that time and energy which would be spend attacking an opponent into "attacking" your wives/girlfriends.

Well, "attack" may not exactly be a good word to use, but you know what I mean. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

We just need to bit more subtle about it.

"What's going on Bob?"

"I just want to get to know you better!"

"Yes, but for three years you hardly noticed me and now you are all over me."

"Can I help it if I want you so bad!"

"You do?"

"Yes baby, I do!"

"Ohhhhhh Bob.

"Yes, baby."

Ohhhh Bob....more to the left."

"Oh yes, baby yes...."

Ring

"Oh, Oh, oh booooobbbb...."

Ring

"Oh baby, oh baby."

Telephone answering machine speaks, "Hey Bob! You there? With PBW down so long, us guys are going crazy not playing SE4. We are thinking of hooking up a few machines and...

Shriek....

Bob, barely makes it out of the bedroom alive. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Thank you Cirvol for talking me down off the edge there...

Geo, put down the server and step back. Don't do anything stupid now Geo. Let's talk...

Damn video drivers. Damn video drivers. Must have got corrupted when the MB failed Last week.

Looks like it's staying up now and I have run all the turns that tried to run and failed yesterday. So you may have a turn waiting for you in your mail box if you are one of the lucky ones. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: PBW Server is down - and back up again

At times I joke around a lot, but this time, I do have something serious to say.

The first time PBW was down, I wrote the "Chicken Little" thing with the sky falling down, thinking it was very funny.

I know now that it was a way of releasing my own tension.

But in doing so, maybe, inadvertently, I transfered some of it to George.

Sometimes, I don't think we recognize or appreciate the service George is doing.

George, I want you to know that I really appreciate your efforts and the consideration you have shown us.

Thanks Tbontob. And while I did do the work, I cannot take all the credit. Everyone of you that donated to PBW have a share in this cause without you we could not have afforded to get the parts.

And a particular thanks to GozGuy and Cirvol for answering lots of stupid questions. Although I work in computer support, all of my work is very application specific so I don't know much more than the average user about windows, and the Last time I cracked open a pc case is was a 386. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

WOOHOO!!! PBW is back up and running like there was never a problem. I can feel the hackles on the back of my neck going down as the worst of my withdrawal symptoms begin to subside!!

Thanks to Cirvol and Gozguy for really helping Geo get this going again.

And, of course, a huge "YOU DA MAN!!" thank you to Geo for running this thing at all...never mind through these major breakdowns.

Now back to the game! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Great job on getting it back up and running again... one odd thing, though. It seems to be 12 hours off--AM/PM are reversed.

Can you change it without throwing off the 24-hour cycle of current games? Or will games scheduled to calc within the next 12 hours get cranked when you move the clock ahead?

Cirvol January 10th, 2003 04:24 PM

Re: PBW Server is down - and back up again

my solution to the sig.other being 'lonely'

get them to act as your secretary or foreign advisor/minister/secretary... women are better at communication anyway right? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif get them to do the yak'in while you do the wack'in http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

(note: this may not work for all sig.others (like mine) cuz some of em just can't get 'into' it... oh well, just put those types in front of a tv with friends reruns etc http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

wow... feels like friday eh?

Re: PBW Server is down - and back up again

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Well, wifey sat down Last week and did the tutorial. She did a few more turns. Some AI whacked her scout ship and she asked, "What do I do now?"

I guess she's better at flamin' mechs on the Zone... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

tbontob January 10th, 2003 07:39 PM

Re: PBW Server is down - and back up again

Some of the Posts about getting the sig.other involved are hilarious! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

But the discussion does bring up a very good point.

Is it possible to have a game with a guy/gal teams. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The wack'in and yak'in division is interesting.

Would it promote better relations between the "duo players" Or would there be major discord (the guy wants the super-duper annihilator weapon whereas his she wants to trade for Farm Facility 2).

And would it spill over and have major repercussions in other areas of their daily life (the wife/girlfriend is so pissed at being pressured to get the super-duper weapon that she starts to withhold certain "interactions" with her sig.other). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Guys, are we stepping into something where angels fear to tread? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Aha, I thought it was off, but it being exactly 12 hours was throwing me. Thank you for pointing that out.

Normally I could not change the time without kicking off at least a couple games, but right now I still have the autoprocessing off so no games will run because of time limits anyway. They either have to have all turns in or the game owner has to force the turn manually to run from the game admin screen.

I think it might be a DNS problem - using the text name doesn't work, but using the numbers [66.134.102.75] pops it right up. heh.

Rigelian. The problem you are having is jsut with your game. I have notified the game owner and the player whose turn is causing the problem. Will get you going as soon as possible.

Atari, I don't think anyone else is having the same problem you are. Although sometimes DNS problems are limited to certain geographical areas, so it is possible.
