Re: OT: Narf has gone looney and wants to GM.

If I lose a level of Wizard, that means losing two feats and 7 skill points as well as the casting stuff, right? Painful... although it would help get the Archmage levels in.

Still, if it's a choice between one annoying resurrection and having enough resources for more or one nice resurrection and no more resources, the choice is clear. Let's go with Resurrection.

Although, we did just get a bunch of loot, so those resources can be replenished... Even if nowhere else keeps that many valuable diamonds in stock, you should be able to get them from the Archmages...

Also, you might want to get an Amulet of Health soon. Even +4 constitution would have been enough to survive the Disintigrate with 5 hp left.

Quite... I think... the +2 bonus would have netted 30 more HP due to level gains, if I'm reading that correctly.

Told you she would have wanted true ressurection. Makes a perfect sidequest for when Violist is gone!

douglas November 13th, 2005 02:56 PM

Re: OT: Narf has gone looney and wants to GM.

Yeah, we do have an upcoming session without Violist this Saturday, and we could use that for a side quest to find someone to cast True Resurrection. As I said, we do have enough new loot to replenish the diamond reserves pretty easily if necessary. Narf will also be gone for at least part of that for an appointment of some sort, IIRC, but I think Kibin, Elorin, and Jason should be able to handle it.

Violist said:Quite... I think... the +2 bonus would have netted 30 more HP due to level gains, if I'm reading that correctly.

Correct. Amulet of Health +4 = +4 Constitution = +2 Constitution bonus = 2 * level hit points = 2 * 15 = 30 more hit points. That plus the temporary hp from Heroes' Feast would have put you at 99 hit points. As I recall, the Disintigrate did 94 damage. Oh wait, stumbling on the sharp ground took out the temporary hp, so you would have been at merely 81 hp, and gone down to -13. It still would have been much less overkill, and bumping the amulet up to +6 would have made the difference. Of course, there's also the fact that constitution bonuses add to fortitude saves...

Violist November 13th, 2005 03:08 PM

Re: OT: Narf has gone looney and wants to GM.

Actually, I suddenly realised, next week is fairly nebulous... I'm having my wisdom teeth removed Friday so I'll probably be higher than Kibin on a thundercloud, but that'll mean I most likely couldn't go to the tournament... ick. Best for me to just miss next session.

I can actually afford the +6 amulet, interestingly enough... barely.

Incidentally, for those of you that have done it, would you recommend I be concious or unconcious during the procedure? I still haven't made up my mind.

Also, don't freak if the cotton they give you gets bloody - As long as the blood doesn't soak in, it's ok.

Re: OT: Narf has gone looney and wants to GM.

Unless you want to scientifically investigate the removal of teeth from a mouth from a personal perspective, yes.

(First, they numb your gum. Then, the dentist pushes the gum back from the teeth. After that, the tooth is wiggled back and forth to loosen it and pulled on. All of this takes longer to happen than to tell, and *Hurts*. Then, they sew your gums together using a curved needle on the end of a handle. This also hurts. After that, you get cotton balls to soak up the blood. Pushing them against the gum also hurts, especially when you aren't aware that you needn't continue pushing if, after about an hour, the tissue has only blood on the surface.)

NullAshton November 14th, 2005 07:10 PM

Re: OT: Narf has gone looney and wants to GM.

I had the removal of a tooth before it came out of the gum. Owie. They cut open my gum, and then used a drill to chop the tooth up into tiny pieces, which they then took out. After extracting the broken pieces of my teeth, they took this biodegradable thread, and stitched up my gum, which then swelled up to the size of a baseball. Funny thing was, what with the general anethesia and the big freaking needles worth of painkiller, it still hurt... Good thing I was too spaced out to care.

You're not really unconscious. You just get a weird buzzing feeling in your head, and everything feels happy.

Depends on what the doctor uses, I guess. I remember absolutely nothing between lying on the operating table with a needle hooked up to a small plastic tube stuck in my arm and then stumbling out to the car (with help, of course) while only half-awake at most. My mouth was almost completely numb and only marginally responsive for at least several hours afterwards - I had to spit out water I used to rinse with by tilting my head forwards and letting gravity do it for me.

Anyway, I can't think of any reason at all to not go the full knock-out route unless you're really that incredibly curious about it. Any normal activity involving your mouth will be nearly impossible for quite a while afterwards, and the pain is going to last longer than the painkiller and make you want to just lie there with some ice packs against your cheeks for a few hours. Recovering from a general anesthetic during that time will not be a significant extra handicap, and will probably help dull the pain for longer than any local painkiller could.

Oh, that won't last too long...

Although, I do have something to attend this Saturday; starts at 11 AM PST (one hour after we've been starting recently), and probably won't run for too terribly long; I will likely be back at around noon PST (two hours after we've been starting recently); so... with two players probably missing, and a shorter DM time, try for a smaller session, or cancel this week?

Or something else - it's possible for someone else to DM a different game; the server itself doesn't require intervention from me.... usually.

Wow, we actually let this drop to the second page. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Anyway, I vote we try for a session tomorrow, even with the late start and missing players. Violist missing hardly matters until we get Kaylin resurrected, and Narf's appointment sounds like we'll just have to learn to deal with it, or figure out a way to reschedule things so it doesn't conflict.

Just NPC Derrel. I'm fine with that, so long as you remember he's a paladin. (A remarkably relaxed paladin, at that. But still a paladin.).

You know, the more I play this character, the more I feel that the best explanation for his paladin status is that he doesn't know how he got it.

Let's see.... the dragon fight went as expected (hey - 15th's don't stand much of a chance against THAT). 2250 xp each for Kibin, Derrel, Jason, and Elorin for the Evil Dwarven Wizardess; a CR 10 Summon Monster & Forcecage trap defeated, as well as a Energy Drain CR 10 trap, 375 xp each for Derrel, Jason, Elorin, and Kibin; Kaylin back in action, with no loss of level (but loss of permanent spells, and a little loss of dignity); ruins of the Archmage's tower investigated briefly, mysterious green gem found by Kibin.

Sum: 2625 xp each to Kibin, Derrel, Jason, and Elorin;

No votes on the "Best Roleplayer" for last week? Ah well, 1000 or more XP gone to waste.

Who roleplayed best this session?

Log attached.

"Once you have given a dominated creature a command, it continues to attempt to carry out that command to the exclusion of all other activities except those necessary for day-to-day survival (such as sleeping, eating, and so forth)."

We were commanded to find and destroy the gem containing the prismatic dragon's soul. Looting the place would not have helped towards that goal, so Jason was the only one of us even capable of looting. After the ancient dragon dispelled the trio of Dominate Monsters, I suppose we could have asked for her to wait while we went back in and looted, but I wouldn't want to risk trying her patience.

Now that we're not dominated and we don't have a CR 60 or so dragon to get impatient with us, we could go back to loot if we decide to. That will have to wait for next week in any case, even if we do go back, unless you want to just gloss over dealing with the traps and hand us the list of what's there.

Jack Simth November 20th, 2005 03:18 AM

Re: OT: Narf has gone looney and wants to GM.

Yeah, I know; Context of the statement - it was after noting that the 25,000 gp worth of materials wasn't consumed - consider:

I decided to rate the Encounter Level at 17th - he had almost no equipment on him, and so this reduced his CR; he thought he was secure in his fortress, and so was running around unbuffed (stupid him...) as he was spending most of his energies on making an Artifact.

The treasure value of a EL 17 is around 36,000 gp; you saved 25,000 gp in MC for the True Ressurection, and 1,530 for hiring a Cleric-17 to actually cast it (total: 26,530 gp not spent) leaving a mere 9,470 short of the expected treasure value for the encounter, which is within the range of random variance on the treasure generation tables. As you normally sell treasure, and get half value for everything but coins (call it 20,000 gp netted from an "average" haul) you're ahead of the game for not having to hire the spell.

And Kibin did find something....
