Re: Are you tough enough to be the "King of the Hill"?
I have gone down in hard defeat once again. Thanks to Primitive for a well-played game. I was out-researched and likely out-colonized almost from the start, my being out-fought was a given. There was a little give and take, but very little. I did most of the giving up and he did most of the taking, especially from kicking my butt repeatedly. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Funny difference in this game was that I still had pretty good production and research going, but the game had been over for a while. I am grateful Primitive was amenable to smearing me just a little longer so I could see how some things played.
I wish him well on the next step up, and I look forward to seeing who I will face next! |
Re: Are you tough enough to be the "King of the Hill"?
Kudos to Cheeze for a well fought game. I went with the traditional clone setup, he had the guts to do something different. Our Galaxy was split in two roughly equal parts with one single warp-point connecting them (+ a backdoor through a black hole system), with both of us having our home-planet just one system away (from the warp-point). I was lucky and won the first battles for that warp-point and managed to establish myself within his part of the galaxy. Learned a lot from this game, especially those final battles (thanks Cheeze http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ).
Looking forward to my next game as well. primitive |
Re: Are you tough enough to be the "King of the Hill"?
Update on Gandalph vs Rambie;
We have just finished turn 49. His Homeworld is no more. He has 1 other planet in his Home system, but I now have 2 and 1 one the way. My scouts have discovered another 2 planets in another system adjacent, but nothing other than that at this time. He is definitely a die hard and is countering my attacks with WP's quite effectively, however, as I can now build ships faster than I lose them, it's only a matter of time. |
Re: Are you tough enough to be the "King of the Hill"?
So I was tweaking my empire for my upcoming game against Tesco. I started with the empire from my Last game agaisnt Stonemill. And i realized that in that game I didn't use all the racial points. I had a 0 racial point empire going against a Stonemill's 2000 point empire. DOH! I am such an idiot. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Are you tough enough to be the "King of the Hill"?
Kazarp (DavidG) vs. Stone Mill:
It is never a good thing to have a big fleet of enemy ships pounding your homeworld. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif DavidG certainly had me in a very bad position; annoyingly used mines (or the threat of mines) against me and continued to control key positions. He expolited the fact I was very late in researching mines 2; it is tough to counterattack when you don't have enough sweepers. So I pull back the fleet guarding the warp point in my home system for training. Almost on cue, he came through soon after with a fat fleet and cleared my minefield. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/blush.gif The sad thing was that I could not readily counter attack and risk being baited into a fresh minefield. I knew it would take him at least 2 turns to reach the homeworld, so I patiently waited, knowing he could have his way with all the planets in the system. On the second turn he fragged a great planet, and moved into striking range. I guessed that he could not resist gunning for my homeworld; so I moved my fleet there for defense. At this point in the game, things looked grim. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif But I guessed right http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif (for once); my fleet routed his ships over my homeworld. My home planet took a pounding, but survived. A painful result was that he destroyed my Space Port, which sent my economy crashing. I halted my empire's production for a few turns to build a new one; all the minesweepers needed for a counterattack sat in queue and waited. Unfortunately, this gave him valuable turns to generate a defense fleet. I finally got things together and plowed through. He generated a surprisingly big fleet at the warp point, but they were no match. What a relief. I was really sweating. As it stands now, a bell is tolling in his home system. And do not ask for whom the bell tolls... |

Edit -> Did you review that combat Stone Mill? If you can figure out why the F%&k my ships chose the targets they did I would love to know about it. The all had Point Blank Orders with targeting priorites "Has Weapons, Most Damaged, Strongest, Nearest" yet for some reason all my ships targeted those that were far away even though there was a ship right next it with weapons. If I don't figure out this tac combat thing soon this game is going to lose it's appeal. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif [ February 21, 2003, 22:32: Message edited by: DavidG ] |
