For those into retro-strategy gaming I would suggest:

-Lords of Midnight (spectrum 48k game, but a PC port exists and is only a few Kbs)

-Centurion, defender of the crown

The first game i ever played was Xenon II. Then i discovered Sokoban, and finally Dune 2. That whas the beginning for me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif . I think those games came in the late 80's, at least Xenon II. Later i got a hang of Commander Keen and stuff like that.

Whatever happened to the "Beer and Pretzel" computer strategy games? Games such as "Ports of Call" or "Oil Imperium" where you could bench three or four friends in front of the computer and have fun for an evening? Hot-seat games weren't just hot-seat because of technical limitations - they were a special kind of fun.

Darned it - I'm too young to be nostalgic!

Tower of the Moon

It seems to be a home to unofficial Lords of Midnight 1&2 PC-conVersions... I thought the same guy was doing a remake, but didn't find it so it was propably my mind doing tricks for me.

My first pc game experience was probably digger (and I still play it today).
My first real strategy game? Probably The Ancient Art of War by Borderbund (Awesome game, availabe at the Underdogs. The games I played most in the 80's (second half) were probably Digger, Pirates!, Wasteland, Ancient Art of War and Bards Tale 1.
Sigh. Those were the days .... (I could live on a candy bar and a can of coke for two days, needing no sleep and no light, and still geting good grades in school, somehow.)

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Incidentally, Sid Meier is working on a new Version of Pirates! these days. Might turn out sweet, sweet, sweet - or it might turn out to be "oh, woe for what could have been."

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yup, heard about it. Hoping for the best here!
For those who like the pirate genre and cannot wait, I suggest Port Royale 2 coming out in April (at least in Europe). Right now, it looks even better than Sid Meiers Pirates!

I haven't played Port Royale 1 but they have a very solid fan base.

Sorry for the topic drift.

Tough to recall the first computer game I played. Probably "pong".

I think the first strategy game for a computer I can remember playing was "Empire". I can't even find any references to it on Google, but it was a 4-color title. I don't even remember what I was playing it on - either an early IBM PC or an Apple ][, I would suppose.

Edit - Thanks for the pointer to the-underdogs.org, great site. Empires (the Version I first played) was released in 1978. I probably played it in the early 80s sometime. I have some memories of playing the 16-color Version during college around '88, but everything from that time is more-or-less buried in a beer-soaked haze.
