What I am saying is that "copyright" laws, rely on "copying". 30% change is enough to be considered original content. It's not so hard at all to change 30% of the creative content, and to not reuse any graphics that are under copyright.

You seriously cannot be sued for having the Nose of Sooron. If you could be, you'd be infringing on copyright every single time you pressed the "Continue" button, and sent a post onto the forums, because you're using words and images somewhat similar to someone's copyrighted material somewhere - and yet claiming them as your own.

I understand that. But Im still not sure it would make too much of a difference here. If someone says they drew from another game or something like that, it would tend to seal its own fate. Altho I think its only come up in the past when the images seemed obviously to be taken directly from another game.

It's not quite that simple (when is anything to do with law that?) Copyright law also has the concept of "derivative work" which can include wholly new works, but which are based on existing, copyrighted work -- such as fan-fiction, user-made mods, movie versions of books and so on.

Look into the "Hobbit" lawsuit of the Tolkien Estate vs. TSR over D&D.

Oh, and movie quotes.

"Rommel, you magnificent bastard! I read your FAQ!" -- Patton (1970) ... well, sorta.

Oh my god. You people are outrageous. What started out as a simple post for folks to quote their favorite movie lines, has devolved into a discussion of copyright law. Jeez Louise folks, get a life!

Im also happy to see it go from an OT to semi-OT.

Some of these movie quotes do make excellent Dominions lines. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Also no one got my mystery quote, I win! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

Oh and Leif, that's why if all names are changed, and no artwork is reused, you can still say "inspired by", and it is not derivative, but is wholly your own work. You don't even have to credit the inspiration, but it's polite. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
