You know, if LCC were still here, he might point out that it is very suspicious that a person with the username of "Mac5732" is suggesting that people start getting paid in burgers.

Spill it Mac, you're real name is Ronald isn't it. And you wear a lot of makeup? I thought so...

Re: OT: How old are you ?

Greetings all...

JamieVT here. I've been lurking here for several months and have finally decided to move to the forefront and begin to post.

I am a 24 year old male and have 1 wife, 2 dogs, 1 cat, & 1 horse. I'm not sure which is the most work yet, but the wife seems to be winning the contest (as she is the cause of the rest of the list).

As for employment, I have worked at Big Blue since graduating from college.

For interests, I am involved in my town's volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. I also am involved in community theater and am currently cast as "Brassett" in "Charlie's Aunt". Other than that I am highly addicted to games whether they be tabletop, console, computer, or cards.

with any luck those will all be fixed with the next patch (as suggested by the 1.42 feature list). of course, the host can always cheat, so its important to trust who you play with.

I am 51, a grognard. My first strategy game was Stalingrad by Avalon Hill. I enjoy the space 4X genre of computer games. Loved MOO and MOO II.

Playing SE4 with two friends by e-mail, us against the AI. The first game was interesting but not too challenging. We've changed things for our latest game. All players start with 10 homeworlds which are not the same size and races are allowed to start in same system. As we are playing team mode against computer, it means instant and immediate war with computer empires mixed in with your systems. Lots of fun so far.

Eh, what the heck. I'm 19, live in New Jersey and go to college in New York. My first exposure to 4X games was Spaceward Ho! There was then a long dry spell in which I played nothing of the sort (with occasional recaps to Civ 2 which I was not very good at). Then came along Rebellion. I got it, I played it, I loved it. Senior year in high school my roomie and I would play multiplayer games against each other, constantly tossing taunts and boasts back and forth in the room.

Then I rather stumbled upon Space Empires IV, gave the demo a go, and was sucked in. Simple, really. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Very new to SE4 (I've had it about 2 weeks). I live in western Maryland in the USA, in a town called Frostburg. I am 38 with a wife, a son in college, and 2 fantastic dogs (Lucky and Shadow). I have had a computer since I was 16. I bought it instead of a car! A TRS-80 that I paid almost $800 for. I remember playing possibly the first flight sim on it. The terrain was a chessboard looking affair with some 2D mountains on one end. I was hooked, and have played games ever since. I started out working construction in the summer at age 11, and did it full time after college. I then got a job with a defense contractor, and now fire rocket motors for a living. Construction work to Rocket Motors! I LOVE America. I’ve even done some work on the Titan program for Larrybush (the igniters and staging rockets). As far as games, its: SE4, Diablo 2, and Baldur’s Gate 2. Sorry I went so long. This is a great post.

I know what you mean about modems, Some day I'll get my wife to go along with getting one or the other, between my 3 kids and myself bugging her, sooner or later we'll get one of them...hope you enjoyed your vacation...

I don't think new people go back and read all the old Posts but I think they scan thru say the Last 20-30 days and read the interesting ones.

I find this one of the more interesting topics and a good post.

Re: OT: How old are you ?

Well, I'm not a noob, but this is the first time I've seen this thread http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I am 44 and work as a VMS Systems Administrator with EDS in Ralieigh, NC. I am currently interviewing with Cerner in Kansas City and may move there soon http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I spent 8 years in the Marines where I worked on the Hawk Missile system (yeah, the ones that Oliver North was selling). I attended many colleges over the years, real life kept interfering with my schoLastic pursuits, but, most notable were Texas A&M University, University of Texas at Tyler, and Sam Houston State University.

I was introduced to gaming in the USMC and have been playing ever since. My first roleplaying game was Merc, and my favorite was The Morrow Project...both are long out of print http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

My all-time favorite game of any sort is Civilization, the board game. It is also out of print, but I hear rumblings that the company that bought Avalon Hill is going to re-release it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

My first strategy computer game was Empire, and I've been playing them ever since. Some of my favorite Computer games (other than Everquest, which I talk about below) have been: Empire, MOO, MOO II, The Perfect General (no better game for mano-a-mano, armor tactics), Global Conquest (Dan Bunten), XCom, Civilization II, The Bard's Tale, the original Pool of Radiance series by SSI (don't waste your money on the new one), Drakkar (early MMORPG) and all of the Sim games...gotta love them Sims.

EverQuest deserves special mention because I've never played any game as long as I have this one, except for Drakkar. My wife and I have been playing Everquest since the final phase of the Beta test. Soon after the game went live, we founded our guild, The Chosen Few, on The Rathe server (http://pub10.ezboard.com/bthechosenfew2416). We are currently on the Zebuxuruk server, and, We are one of the oldest guilds in EverQuest on any server.

My wife discovered SE IV in a magazine review (CGW, I think) Last year around December sometime and showed it to me...we ordered it right away http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: OT: How old are you ?

Might as well introduce myself too.

My kewl board nickname is Mark Walton, but my real name is Deathlord Zxk'ulll.

I am 32 years old and currently unemployed following a &!+(# of a year. (really)
Just to make myself look even more impressive, I am single and live at home.

At present I am expanding my knowledge of C++, and OOP in general, studying toward an OU degree (if they ever process my application for next year... grrrrrrr...)

I am a keen mucker-abouter-with of games. If I can't actually mod a game, I'll probably just set up a website telling the developers their jobs (for instance, my quest engine etc pages for Ultima Online when I was masquerading as Coral of Minoc, for reasons too dull to explain to you here)
See my other Posts and you will see what I mean - I'm always trying to change something or push the system to breaking point.

When I am not ruining computer games, I spend my time ruining board games, or inventing new ones, or just coming up with neat rules and ideas which I will collect into a game later.

My goal in life is to become a pro programmer, and make games. Or, do something amazing with an AI which will impress everyone.
Basically I just need to get a job, though. Or, make a new game which people will buy a lot of. But the only idea I have had recently is "copy SE4" so I need to generate some new ideas.

Growltigga December 19th, 2001 08:58 PM

Re: OT: How old are you ?

Seems a good time to jump on the bandwagon and introduce myself to all and sundry

Forum name is Growltigga which is actually the name of one of my cats (sad I know). Real name is Rob. Neither of these has anything to do with my game persona as leader of the Solar Federation.

I am 32 and am a lawyer based out of Manchester. I specialise in banking and finance which means (a) I am boring and (b) I have no social life. My wife agrees.

I spend most of my time avoiding the locals and cursing anyone who supports Manchester United (I am originally from Kent and support Chelsea for anyone who cares).

I got into board gaming as a child, primarily Starfire, Starfleet Battles and any of the bookcase games that were produced. Got into SE IV after checking the Starfire forum on Delphi and finding a thread that said SE IV was the closest computer game on the market to the Starfire format - which it is). Also a mate of mine (I think he was on the forum as Khanuk) reccomended the game.

Also a naval history buff so spend a fair chunk of time on the game coming up with names for the various classes of ships I design - sad but I do get perverse pleasure from designing Agamemnon class battlecruiser, Tigris class destroyers etc
I also seem to have a bizarre problem in that everything I design is missile heavy.

I am a bit of a perfectionist - I have only had SEIV for about 3 weeks and have spent a fair chunk of time renaming all the star systems with proper astronomical names - I spend hours trying to come up with decent names for colonised planets and usually end up with derivations of 'New Boston', 'New London', 'New Basra' etc

classic case of anal retentiveness really

Still, SEIV is a top game. I think myself and Dogscoff should pursue the nation challenge I mentioned in my earlier Newby qyestion thread

I am a 33 year old family physician in Scottsburg, Indiana. A bunch of lawyers on SEIV! Any malpractice lawyers out there? I would love to go head to head against you in a game of SEIV. Just think of it as therapy. You can act out fantasies of death and destruction Online. It would be therapeutic for me. Just drop me a line. Hehe. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

I have played most of the Avalon Hill, etc... bookshelf games. Shoot, I cut my teeth on Star Fleet Battles. I used to play PBEM about 7 years ago. I couldn't believe it when I saw Mephistos posting for a web site. I thought the game died out years ago. Now I am going to have to go to the basement tonight and see if I can find those tattered and worn boxes of rulebooks and counters! Thanx. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

No worries, tell me how I do it and I will post it on the board. I am currently up to 255 names (the max size of galaxy I seem to able to get SE IV to take).

Talking about Starfleet Battles, has anyone done ship sets/new races for Gorn, Kzinti, Lyran and the lesser known Trek races. I see the main ones have been done (and very nice too).

Talking about boardgames, if any one you want a board game that is very much like SEIV, Starfire is the definately the closest match I have seen.

Talking about lawyers, there are probably so many off us on the forum as we are nice, sociable, well adjusted individuals

fun though isn't it - I do the same thing, DD = Destroyer, DDE = Escort Destroyer, DDX = Destroyer (with a heavy weapon), DDF = Fleet support destroyer and so on

Re name classes, I stick to good old English Napoleonic/WWI/WWII class names - bit of a pain up the derriere though when for example, us English only built so many Tigris class vessels and I need names for a dozen more

Dunno about you, but I kind of think it adds a bit of realism to the game

Curious though, what is the largest number of ships anyone has had in their empire? I am up to 183 and wonder if anyone has got to insanely large numbers

You can make the list of names much bigger, since they're picked at random. That way you won't have exactly the same set of names every game.

To post the file, go to Shrapnel Games' Forums, then New Scenario/Mod Forum. This kind of list would go on on the Space Empires:IV Data/Sound/Graphic thread. Post a reply to that thread, then click on the tiny File Upload link on the left side of the posting form. After the file finishes uploading, the window will give you a long UBB code to copy and paste into the message body, to make the link for others to download the file.

Re: OT: How old are you ?

How Old Am I for SE IV Forum
How old am I? I guess you are talking chronologically, (most folks will tell you I never grew up).
I’m a Creative SWM 47, I like turn based 5X games, (the fifth X is refers to my X wife), Hikes in the mountains, and Photography. Oh, I almost forgot, this is not a personals site, * sigh * are there any female 4x gamers out there?.
Cardboard:
My fist game was Tactics Two and Blitz Krieg from Avalon Hill. That led to Panzer Blitz, and Squad Leader. I found Star Fire and Gev but no opponents. I spent hours creating spreadsheets in Lotus / Excel to make the game more manageable but still no humans to play against. I loved Star Fleet Battles till it got just too complex.
Miniatures:
During the same time period I developed a love for Micro Armor, (1/285 - 300 scale). I played on squad, company, battalion, and regiment levels using modified WRG rules and eventually a set of very complete rules called * Impact * written by a colleague of mine.
Computers:
In the beginning there was a void. It was years before I found Empire and could run it on my 4.77 Mhz computer with 4 colors. I played it so much I burned my fiancés pea soup.
One good thing led to another. My systems got faster, my marriage got shakier, and the games got better. They I still have Empire Deluxe, Civ II, Populous, Lemmings,
My all time favorite game was Civ II. My most satisfying victory was “buying” the world with spies and blockading tactics to cause revolts.
While looking for a web site on “Star Fire” the paper Version, I found SE III. My gaming skills got even better, my marriage ended. Sound familiar anyone?
About 2 weeks ago I acquired a SE IV and have spent at least 40 hours playing it. Bonus: no wife to nag me about waste my life away.
Note: I have very poor vision, I only see about 5 inches across on computer screen at reading distance. I also have trouble with blues on black or red and any variation there of. This is a major issue when scanning a system for ships and the colors blend. It does make it more of a challenge. * wry grin *.
Hope this gives folks an idea of who I am.

Re: OT: How old are you ?

I'm 35, but my gaming experiences probably parallel most of yours:

Played SFB until they issued a whole new edition to make the game more expensive- er uh 'consolidate the rules'. I was like 17 and couldn't afford to buy games I already had because somebody wanted the ECCCM with extra drone pods, or whatnot.

Played Starfire when it came in baggies. Again a brilliant game runined by SFB dropouts who decided to mod it to death.

went into hibernation until computer games came up to the level of the classic board games, and now I'm back.

No Ex-wife, just a slightly harried, but very understanding one, and three kids who are getting quality time with dad by 4x ing the galaxy with me!

Re: OT: How old are you ?

I will turn 30 this September.

As far as I go I have been playing games for a very long time. My first games came way of the Atari 2600 and Vic 20, and then grew to the school's TRS-80's and Apple computers. I also played various board games and RPG's (Paranoia, Star Frontiers, D&D and AD&D, Powers and Perils, Marvel Super Heroes, Battletech, etc).

I first got into PC Gaming with Battlehawks 1942 and Castle Wolfenstein and Civ. The first PC I ever bought for myself was bought to play games like CivII, Panzer General, and the MOO series.

I have been involed in the gaming industry since I started beta testing in 97 and shortly began writing reviews after that. Then unto The Wargamer for a stint before meeting Tim and helping him out with Shrapnel.

Something you guys might not know is that Andy Stingel from Gone Gold and PvK turned me unto SE:IV first, as well as a few other eMailers. When I got the CD my first thought was "Why isn't a larger game company publishing this" and then I relized that they are all filled with moron's now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif .

I will turn 39 in August.

My love for this genre stretches back to the days of "Reach For the Stars", "Imperium Galactica", "Colonial Conquest", and many others on the old warhorse that was "C64".

Content & imagination went a log way and SE IV has captured the essence of that to perfection.

I´m 35! Whaaaaaaa! But, i feel much younger! (giggle)

As most of you - my first one was an ATARI Mega ST. With this computer, my love to PC-games arrised.

Funny to see, that a lot of folks here around 30 or more. Didn´t expect this. But, it´s a good feeling, not to be alone.

BTW, i´m not married, never was and hopefully never will be. No kids, no cat no dog. My life is free, so that i can play all the time, after work.
My girlfriend hates this, but who cares (hehehehehe).
Greetings to all here.

Im 39 again, and again, and again.

My first home computer was a demo board with a Motorola 6800 8 bit proccessor. We had Basic on 8K of ROM! We (techs) added keyBoards and a color TV output. Later we all added 64K dynamic ram.

Years later I bought an XT with two floppy drives. It was so nice to have that extra drive, I could just leave the DOS disk in drive A.

UPGRADES HAPPEN!!!
