But I will miss having fun with peoples titles. I was going to hold them to the epithets they got when they created their pretenders. Why would I have anything to do with a pretender whose titles included Duke of Corruption, or God of Fraud and Theft, or Patron of Liars?
That's why I made sure that my god's titles weren't crazy. I got "Prince of the Deeps" I think, and "Prince of Metals". Fairly thematic for Atlantis, I say, with their Basalt Kings.

My inner pedant forces me to point out that basalt is a form of volcanic rock, not a metal. :o

And did we figure out what the deal with Yomi is?

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

I would very much like to play Pangea.
Under the carefree direction of Annaga-Gradana the peoples of Pangea begin to undertake what would be called an isolationist policy in other cultures, but in Annaga-Gradana's domain is merely an extension of her Pangea centric will. Not yet gaining the hatred of humanity that would characterize the future peoples of Pangea, Annaga-Gradana's time is one of boundless passion, insatiable lust, and languid slumber, a calm before the storm.

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

No word yet on who Yomi is.. If I don't hear from them soon I'll just delete the pretender to make sure.

Hey-hey,

I've written a short intro to Ulm now. No prizes for guessing which pretender I'm using...

Short? Really?

I'm afraid I have to demand you lower the quality of your writing. You're making me look bad, and we can't have that.:envy:

I don't recognize the beginning (maybe I'm just not well-read?), but I envy your writing skills. I'm going to have to step it up a notch. :p

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Well, I hope I don't spoil anything but it's a modified quote from the beginning of one of the classical Conan stories - which, of course, was an inspiration for EA Ulm! :) I don't remember the title offhand, but this episode was also taken as the starting episode of Conan the Barbarian movie. Both Howard's stories and movie are definitely worth to check - even though I generally love some other Howard's cycles more (namely Solomon Kane, Bran MakMorn, plus horror stories and humor ones, Bearcreek Gentleman being a favorite among the latter).
And step, for all things! It isn't easy to produce good-quality text constantly, so you may well surpass us somewhere at the middle. But I hope we will have something which would be enjoyable to read. ;)

I wrote a one-page long prologue for Oceania - and you don't know the hard time I have trying to write something decent in english ... And I inadvertently closed the tab without saving

If you had a decent browser like Mozilla Firefox, you could have just restored the tab with all the session data and text input with a right mouse click. Time for a change? ;)

Opera, too. But it seems unable to interact with this forum's engine. :(
Mozilla is fine, though.
Don't remember how difficult it would be to look through cache in Explorer, but it's possible to do manually iirc...

Tifone January 29th, 2009 01:42 PM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

I have Opera but wasn't able to find a way to do that

Wrana January 29th, 2009 07:20 PM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Hmmm... If it was in Opera, it saves sessions automatically. You could either use its Recycle-bin-like button to restore tab immediately or (if you had session saved) kill it in Task Manager, reload and choose to load last active session. Now it's probably too late for either. But. You can still either try Opera's History (don't remember whether it wouldn't just load page anew... wait - there is an option in Opera's Preferences to change just that, so if you change it to load from cache before loading page from History, it should work).
Or you can just open in Explorer or your favorite shell (Far, NC, Windows Commander) one of the following folders:
Program Files\Opera\Profile\Cache4
Documents'n'Settings\your-account\Application Data\Opera\...
I recall it sometimes making profile in another subdirectory, but Cache4 should be a sure thing.
Then you just look for a html with a date/time matching that of your mistake and either open it in Opera or look with any viewer. I'd recommend the latter and if you find inside a text needed, copy it into any floder you use for such things - just in case.
Hope that's clear enough - I'm not in a particularly goof shape right now... But Opera certainly saves cache in any amount you tell it to - I made it about 100 MB and 1 month iirc.

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Are we waiting for anything to get this game started?

Maybe Ruminant could set a deadline (Like 12:00 GMT Sunday?), send out PM's to those who haven't submitted pretenders telling them the deadline, and if they don't join up start without them?

Ruminant January 30th, 2009 05:30 AM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Alright, I can see everyones desperate to get started so how does a deadline of 3pm Sunday (GMT) sound? I've sent PMs to the four players that haven't submitted as far as I know, although I suspect that one of them has changed to Yomi without telling anyone ;)

Of course if anyone wants it to be extended for any reason at all, it's no problem. Just PM me or post here.

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Holy ****. Ruminant just dumped 20k characters of Prologue in the Wiki. Maybe you misunderstood the objective - you're not supposed to write the whole novel in the prologue, you're supposed to develop the story over time, m'kay?? :)

Haha, yes. I have troubles with cutting things out. Plus we took too long to start and my mind began to wander..

It's ok though because I will post only in haiku form from now on.

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

One small problem: the beginning of the first paragraph was present-tense, but then it switches to past-tense later on.

Another problem: There's nothing to tell us when the viewpoint switches.

Other than that, great story Ruminant. :D

Ruminant January 31st, 2009 01:18 PM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Ooh, good call Darkwind. I changed tenses so many times to see what would sound better, guess I forgot to make something match up. And yes.. I may have to see about editing that unholy wall of text so it is readable by the human eye.

So. Noones owned up to being Yomi yet.. If noone has by the deadline I'll delete 'em.

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Well we're one hour away from the deadline and at 14 out of 15 players, including enigmatic Yomi. Goin down the pub for a few hours I'll start the game when I get back.

Ruminant February 1st, 2009 01:25 PM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Weeeell... Really should start now. But I'm gonna sleep on it, give whoever hasn't signed up a couple more hours. I got a response from two of four people. And Yomi remains as mysterious as ever. Should I delete the pretender of Yomi or what? I don't want to inadvertantly kick out someone whos been following the game since the start but had a busy week and wasn't able to check the forums.. At the same time even one nation who had to go AI could kinda ruin the diplomatic scene.

Wrana February 2nd, 2009 09:47 AM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Excellent story! Now if only Yomi will post something, too, we may know who it is!

Ruminant February 3rd, 2009 03:41 PM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Well, I'm going to wait one more night to see if our last person joins. Starting the game at roughly 15.00 GMT Wednesday afternoon. I'm going to leave Yomi in unless I hear otherwise or unless people want me to drop them. If nothing else happens then we'll have 14 out of 15 which isn't so bad.

Tifone February 4th, 2009 05:02 AM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

I'd suggest against letting Yomi in if we don't come to know who he is - probably someone who sent the pretender to the wrong game, imho. Having to put a nation AI so early could really favour its neighbours.

Wrana February 4th, 2009 10:36 AM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

While I'd like to see how someone would try to make it work, a possibility of having it as AI is depressing. And if somebody will take part, but not provide stories, it could be a bad example in this kind of game.
Ruminant, did you try to reach him via llamaserver -> e-mail he sent his Pretender from?
And - Tifone, were you able to find your prologue?

Tifone February 4th, 2009 02:23 PM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Nope, I'll have to rewrite it as soon as I can - your suggestions were precious but I use to make the browser automatically kill all the history files - you know, :gossip: Moulder says the government (with the aid of the aliens :alien: ) spies me...

Wrana February 4th, 2009 06:18 PM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Well, I'd say more power to them - and they may catch this incurable condition, too... ;) Back in 1990s we used to have long RPG-oriented talks with some friends on phones which were almost (meaning we had no independent proof, but) certainly bugged. I feel very sorry for guys who had to listen through all of it. :D

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Sorry to spring this suddenly but I'm going to be out of town over the weekend. I'll start the game sans-Yomi, barring any contact, when I get back on Sunday. For reals this time. I promise ;)

I sent Yomi a message over Llama server last night, Wrana. Haven't heard back yet though.

I am happy to announce that we are closer to starting than at any point up until now... Just.. One slight snag.. According to Llama server:

Players so far: 13 =/= Pretenders so far: 12

Whaaaaa?!

Its showing all 13 of the following nations, but only has valid pretenders for 12. My brains trust informs me the problem could be caused by an invalid pretender (wrong version of CBM maybe). Does anyone have an error message from the server sitting unread in a mailbox somewhere? If noone finds one in a day or two we may as well get everyone to resubmit to be safe. Hang in there! Our goal is so very, very close..

I know that I had to channel my Pretender through Llama himself as llamaserver seems to have difficulties with understanding my mail server. But since then it seemed to be fine... Anybody else?

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Here's who we know has received pretender confirmation. Incidentally, Wrana, you don't think theres a chance that Llama manually adding you to the game might account for the pretender discrepency? *shrugs*

Sauromatia - Mithras - Confirmed
Marverni - Vanslime -
Ulm - Jybalbyle -
Helheim - Baalz -
C'tis - NKIan -
Agartha - Ruminant - Confirmed
Atlantis - Darkwind - Confirmed
Arcoscephale - Radiogibbon -
Lanka - Wrana - Confirmed, most likely
Oceania - Tifone - Confirmed
Pangaea - BigandScary -
Mictlan - Mictlan - Confirmed
Abysia - Incabulos - Confirmed

Edit: Apparently this forum has declared a jihad of sorts on the space bar.

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

I am not sure. But - Chronicles_MA there was a similar problem and the Pretender works just fine (actually, he'd awakened lately, kicked some underlings and is now going to further vent his frustration on actual enemies :) ). I can resend EA Pretender directly to you if you PM me your mail account (don't want to bugger Llama more than necessary)...

Ruminant February 10th, 2009 11:22 PM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Alrighty, just waiting on two people getting back to me. It's probably a harmless bug after all, but I'll wait til I get confirmation from everyone just in case.

And nah, sounds like you should be fine Wrana.

llamabeast February 11th, 2009 06:43 AM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

Ah! You could have asked me, you know, being as it looks like some kind of bug. Anyway, I don't know why it said 12 but it definitely has 13. I've corrected it now.

Incidentally if there _was_ a problem like someone sending in a pretender without using CBM, the LlamaServer has no way to catch it. So you would only know when you started the game and it said someone had cheated (in which case you'd just un-start the game and get them to resubmit their pretender).

Welcome to HTML, where usually all kinds of whitespace is contracted to a single space. The forum software actually does help users a lot by keeping linebreaks because it adds the relevant HTML tags when rendering a post.

If you want to keep text indentation, then wrap the relevant section in code tags. That's the button that looks like a sharp (#) in the editor window.

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

You heard the goat-sheep-camel-thing - we're good to go!

Major kudos to Llama for taking the time to look at the issue, thank you muchly ;)

Without further ado, I declare this game open for business with 13 players. *snips ribbon*

Turns at what, 72 hours to start and ballooning out quite soon? Remember you just have to let me know and they can be extended to whatever length you need.

llamabeast February 11th, 2009 10:00 AM

Re: Chronicles_EA: Second-pass Signup and Discussion

72 hours to start is long. Normal games have 24 hours for the first 10-30 turns. Even given that you have chronicles to write, you may want to be careful of making the turns too long, lest it gets a bit slow.

Just a comment, obviously go with the players' consensus.
